One of my favorite designers is Kate Spade. Kate Spade was born on December 24, 1962 in Kansas City, Missouri. Spade graduated from Arizona State University in 1986 and then went on to New York City. When she was in New York, she worked for a magazine called Mademoiselle. After five years of working for this magazine, she earned the title of senior fashion editor and head of accessories. Shortly after receiving this title, she left the company to create her own line. In 1993, Kate launched her own line of handbags that turned out to be very successful. Vera Wang is the face behind the most exquisite bridal wear every girl desires to have. She creates beautiful designs with elegant grace and is “arguably the most prominent designer of bridal wear in America” (Biography 2014). Wang first started off as a senior fashion editor at Vogue and then a design director for Ralph Lauren (Biography 2014). Later on, she started her own line that became the most elegant and sophisticated clothing line in the bridal wear industry. Even the most high-profile celebrities want her clothing such as Uma Thurman, Khloé and Kim Kardashian, and Michelle Obama (Biography 2014)!

Laurence Dacade is a Paris-based shoe designer who lives on a houseboat in Saint-Claud Paris with her husband and children. She currently designs for her own label and for other brands such as Chanel, Kenzo, Givenchy, Jill Sander, Thakoon, Matthew Williamson, and more. When she was in college she started off studying art history and fashion design but soon discovered her passion for shoe design. So, after school she trained at the AFPIC School of Shoe Design and immediately started to work for big fashion houses. Charles James became a highly renowned dress designer of the early to mid 1950’s. He constructed dresses that resembled architect renderings. He considered himself as an artist and a sculptor of dress rather than a dressmaker. His most well known gown was the Clover Leaf gown (figure 10) that was commissioned for Austine Hearst in 1953. Hearst wanted to wear this gown for the Eisenhower Inaugural Ball of 1953. But like most works of art, they take time and sometimes are not finished by the deadline. Hearst was unable to unveil the gown at the Ball, but instead received it shortly after.

As a fashion obsessor, I love to read about different designers and learn things I never knew about or discover a new designer i’ve never heard of. Recently I’ve discovered Paolo Sebastian, an Australian designer who learned how to sew from his grandmother when he was very young. His designs grab fashion lovers’ attention at first glance. His attention to detail is magnificent and each collection of his tells a beautiful story. My personal favorite was his 15/16 SS couture collection because of the way the pieces all come together without being too alike. Paolo Sebastian’s work is art that deserves more recognition.

Fashion has been around ever since ancient times, since the time of the Romans, it survived the world wars and is yet today a business with rapid changes. Fashion started off as an art form, a way for the riches to show their social status with unique and innovative designs that only they could afford. It was a way to separate the social classes of the society. In this paper I will include the creator of haute couture, and how the following designers developed couture, as well as having leading names in today’s ready-to-wear industry. The list is long, but I chose to focus on the three most important designers of the modern fashion industry.

Elie Saab developed an interest on fashion starting from early ages. Built his first atelier only at the age of 18.
