I conducted a phone interview with, Joseph Hladiuk the store manager of the Macys in Robinson Township. Joseph has been the working at Macy’s for over 15 years and has been the store manager for about 5 years now. As the store manager, Joe is directly involved with some of the Human Resource functions and HR is a key component to their business because the organization thrives off of its employees. Macys is a department store that was established in the late 1800’s. Macy’s has over 700 stores and over 150,000 employees in the U.S, Puerto Rico and Dubai. Because Macy’s has an enormous amount of employees, it is important that they have a solid Human Resource Information System to manage all of their employees. Joe talked about their system which is an employee portal that has all of the data for each employee. This system provides employees with information on their scheduling, pay stubs, compensation, training, time off and many other functions that HR is responsible for. This type of employee portal would be considered an Enterprise Resource Planning application. This system is web based and also linked to each register in the store. This system takes information from the register and stores the data in the portal and allows Joe’s HR unit to be more productive. Now that the HR staff doesn’t have to worry about some of the transactional tasked associated with HR, they can be more involved in the strategic planning process. HR staff …show more content…
Macy’s has been able to develop a system that allows the manager to be more effective and allows them to focus more on the daily activities in the store. The ERP that Macy’s uses is important to their success and this system is continuously expanding. Macy’s use of automation helps cut down the cost of training employees and all of their strategies involving HRIS , and technology are a part of the reason they are one of the leading department

A business model is an important and integral part of the business a strategy of any firm whether big or small. Now that we have taken a look at the minimum required hardware and software of the ADP system, let’s examine ADP as a Human Resource Information System, or HRIS for short. A great HRIS system provides critical data about the human resource function of the business as well as helping to create a follow through on the business’s mission and goals. HRIS systems help to reduce organizational costs by contributing to the efficiency of the human resource management function. HRIS systems help to automate critical human resource management functions (Chauhan, Sharma, & Tyagi, 2011, p. 58). HRIS systems contain information on employees, job and work conditions, positions, payroll and benefits, and HR events such as recruitment, training, development, performance appraisals, and terminations (Chauhan, Sharma, & Tyagi, 2011, p. 59). Although ADP offers all of these features, Federal-Mogul utilizes ADP specifically for the payroll and benefits function.
In 1858 Rowland Hussey Macy founded what is known today as Macy’s Department Store in New York City. The company is a mid-range to upscale chain of department stores that target middle to high level incomes. On November 25, 1929 Federated Department Stores was a new American retail company that was a combination of Bloomingdale’s, Filene’s of Boston, Abraham & Straus of Brooklyn, and F&R Lazarus & Company of Ohio. They all agreed to still keep separate identities but would come to link their financial interests. In 2005, Federated made a deal to acquire The Macy Department Stores Company, gaining $11 billion dollars in stock and making them the second largest department store chain in America. Macy’s operates under two names, Macy’s and Bloomindales. Today the company’s headquarters are based out of Cincinnati, Ohio and there are around 800 stores operating within the United States along with a large online presence as macys.com and Bloomingdales.com (Exhibit 1). The department store provides apparel and accessories for men, women, and children. They also provide footwear, furniture, bedding, housewares, and beauty products. Macy’s closed out the 2013 fiscal year with revenue of $9.35 billion, a net income of $730 million and a market capital of 20.86 billion.
The companies that were chosen for a company analysis include Macy’s, Kohl’s, and Burlington. Since the retail industry has been lagging behind lately, these companies will help determine the prospective financial investment in the retail industry. As Macy’s as our primary company, we chose Kohl’s and Burlington to be the two comparative companies. These companies are comparable due to the same SIC code of 5311 in the subgroup of department stores. These companies offer similar products and services with little differentiation between the three.
"We think of Macy’s today as the Great American Department Store because we have kept alive our heritage while also changing for the future, " (2016, Lundgren). When Macy’s first started, no one would have guessed that it would become one of the world’s largest retail operations in the world. The success of the store lands on many people’s hands. If they know how to work the system, they can help the company grow. Some of the people who are involved in making the company successful are first line mangers, even the top managers are involved. In this case they didn’t work very good making decisions which led Macy’s to go down as a company.
In business, it is important for companies to be able to communicate effectively. Each department of a company relies on the other departments as they add to the value chain. One way for a company to integrate its different departments is enterprise resource planning. ERPs are software programs that allow companies to join together data across operations on a company wide basis (Jessup and Valacich 248). ERPs store company information in a common database and allow all departments to access it from one central location (Koch). Companies without ERPS may contain many legacy systems, each operating with different

This year Macy's department store in New York City hired five women to play the role of St.Nick. The women desperately needed jobs and there was a short supply of male workers. As a result, a lot of customers complained and some people even said they might never shop there again.

Macy’s has been around for 100 years, currently operating over 700 stores nationwide, and exploring the idea of expanding globally. A company that has that much experience, assets, and capitals are not likely to be bankrupted. With that being said, the current path and strategy that Macy’s is taking now is slowly killing the company. Their revenue stream has been decreasing to be multiple reasons, controllable and non-controllable. Macy’s should redesign their strategy to reach new markets because their current one is not responding to them as much. As many selections as there are in Macy’s, I think that they should try and carry more at a cheaper rate to encourage the loyal customers for that brand to go to Macy’s. I think the lead time for
Critically analyze the organization from the systems approach. You should consider the inputs, transformation and output elements of the operation and consider how the system creates value.

There are two purposes that HR technology serves in an organization. The first is to improve the efficiency of employee data and HR activities collection. At Xerox, the use of HR technology has been instrumental in making HR services more accessible to their workforce. The second purpose of HR technology is to capture a greater degree of informational data that enables HR planning and managerial decision making. Again, Xerox made use of this aspect by supplying intranet employee surveys and tracking employee views on the company and HR. The
