When the deadline for Iraq to withdraw from Kuwait was broken on January 12, 1990 the United States Congress authorized the use of military force on Iraq for their actions against their neighbor Kuwait. The UN created a coalition force which included over 30 nations led by the United States in order to liberate Kuwait. The United States had amassed its forces along with the coalition forces in Saudi Arabia on the border surrounding Kuwait and Southern Iraq before starting the Air Campaign which decimated Iraqi forces on the ground and air. On the Morning of January 17, 1991 the Air Campaign code named Operation Desert Shield began starting the war to liberate Kuwait. US aircraft along with coalition forces began bombing strategic sites in Iraq to include: aircraft, anti-aircraft facilities, and command communication faculties. The …show more content…
The Iraqis with all of their Soviet style tanks and weapons were no match for the advanced technology that the US and Coalition forces used such as M1 Abrams tank, cruise missiles, stealth fighters and smart bombs. The Iraqis had no choice but to pull of Kuwait and back into Iraq with Coalition forces not far behind them. One Hundred hours after the Ground Campaign started on February 27, 1991 President Bush declared Kuwait liberated and the US forces along with the Coalition forces started pulling back and moving more into a defensive posture protecting the borders until peace negotiations were agreed to both between Iraq and the United Nations. The Conflict that happened between Iraq and the Coalition forces showed that new aged technology and swift movement through the Battle field along with affective tactics are the key to winning the war. Iraq may have had over 400,000 soldiers but not properly deploying your soldiers and The US by taking out communications, command infrastructures, cutting off resupply routes and having air superiority was able to cripple Iraq military forces by pushing them back across the border in utter
Throughout the history of Air Defense Artillery (ADA), innovative steps were made for the technological advance in weaponry to defend our skies and ground forces. The diverse history and continuous research and development of air defense systems played a vital role in the safety of ground troops and foreign civilians during the Persian Gulf crisis. Though not always in the forefront of battle, ADA had its own vital roles that it played from the time of its birth, and it was no different during Operations Desert Storm and Desert Shield when necessity helped to bring about the evolution of the PAC-II Patriot missile.
Prove of the Marine Corps new efforts at warfare would pay off, but with great losses, in the Pacific campaigns, such as Peleliu, Iwo Jim, and Okinawa. The Iraqi invasion of Kuwait, led to the largest deployment of Marines forces since WWII, which consisted of 24 infantry battalions, and 40 squadrons, which totaled to a number of about 95,000 Marines in the Persian Gulf region, as a part of Operation Desert Shield, which began in August of 1990 to January 1991. It has been known as the “100 Hour War” because “by the morning of Feb. 28, 100 hours after the ground war began, the Iraqi army was no longer a threat.”(www.globalsecurity.org ) Most of the fighting that had been going on between the US military and enemy forces, after 9/11 has been in Operation Iraqi Freedom, as well as the Global War on Terrorism “One of the key strategies of Operation Iraqi Freedom during 2003 was the capture of Iraq’s capital, Baghdad. A convoy of thirty thousand Marines advanced five hundred miles from the border of Kuwait in just ten days. On April 9, 2003, Marines secured the center of Baghdad. That same day, Coalition forces declared an end to the dictator’s rule.” (www.marines.com )
The Persian Gulf War began with Saddam Hussein, the dictator of Iraq moving his forces into the neighboring country Kuwait mid-1990. During this time Iraq had the fourth largest army in the world, after being supplied by the United Sates during their eight year war with Iran raised some concerns. (Operation Desert Storm) Also with the chance of Iraq controlling one-fifth of the world’s oil supply didn’t sit well with the United States, nor its Allied forces. (Operation Desert Storm) Early August 1990 the United Nations Security Council directed Iraq to withdraw from Kuwait by 15 January 1991. (Operation Desert Storm) Towards the end of 1990 United Sates began the defense of Saudi Arabia, which known as Operation Desert Shield. Along with multilateral support, the United States sent
Through history, the United States has participated in many significant events, such as the infamous Civil War, World War I and II, and the Cold War. In the same manner, the United States has been in many conflicts with the Middle East. For instance, the Gulf War where, we, the United States, liberated the Saudi Arabian country Kuwait from the dictator Saddam Hussein; however, he is in command of one of the most powerful armies in the globe (Operation). Even though this conflict only lasted for months, America had overcome a milestone. So many military personnel have participated in this conflict and all have different stories as well as perspectives. Whether the veteran was on the front line or working behind the scenes,
Operation Al-Fajr in Arabic, Operation Phantom Fury was the code name given to the second battle of Fallujah, considered the hottest point of conflict of all the military campaign in Iraq. Led by the US Marine Corp against the Iraqi combatants, who had held the city under their control, some consider it was the most difficult battle marines have been involved since Vietnam in the 60s. The battle put end to the insurgent control over the city and constituted an important victory for the US troops, however such victory had a high painful price 1.
Children Committing Violent Crimes The repercussions and treatments of young violent criminals are largely controversial and debatable. When a child commits a crime, especially a violent one, they deserve to be sent into a correctional facility. Offenders, no matter what age they are, are going to need a lot of psychiatric therapy before they’re released into the public population. No offender deserves to be let off the hook because of their age.
Saddam Hussein had the nearly hopeless task of justifying the invasion. He plead the fact that Kuwait had
Desert Storm was the largest build up of U.S forces since the Vietnam War. Within a short period members of the 82nd Airborne Division as well as 300 combat aircraft were deployed to the Middle East. Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait with 120,000 military personnel 2,000 of which were tanks. Iraq’s Air Force at the time was the largest but it was week. They choose quantity over quality also, their Navy was virtually nonexistent. Iraq rolled over Kuwait in two days because Iraq owed $80 million in foreign debt from its war with Iran. Saddam Hussein demanded Saudi Arabia and Kuwait forgive $30 million in Iraq's debt. He accused Kuwait of stealing Iraqi oil through slant drilling. At the time Iraq had the fifth largest army in the world. They boasted more than a million men in uniform in 1991 but only a third of those were skilled professional fighting forces. Iraq rule over Kuwait was very brutal and harsh. America decided that it could not stand by had watch. By the end of September 1990 there were nearly 200,000 American personnel in Saudi Arabia enough to repel any Iraqi attack. The Gulf War coasted an estimation of 63 billion but, for the U.S this was a relatively cheap war. Over 18,000 fighter jets were deployed to combat the Iraqi Air Force. This was the most massive and effective air campaign ever with the U.S only losing 63 combat aircraft. Over a short period of time the Iraqi death toll was over 9,000 the U.S on the other hand only had 1 M.I.A soldier and 383 fatalities in the region more Americans died back home from H.I.V (29,850). The U.S captured over 70,000 enemy troops in the eight months that the war took place. This war brought many new technologies, the Army and Air Force were supplied with most of the new tech. The Marines on the other hand were issued with Vietnam dated gear and outdated version of newer tanks, aircraft, and guns. The U.S military at the time of desert storm used M16A1 M16A2 Car-15 XM4 Carbine M60 MP5 M249 m240 M9 M1911 Barret M82 M24 sniper M2HB M72Law M16 and M47 Dragon. The U.S also a new and advanced platform of tanks known as the M1 series. They used the M1 Abrams MBT
The events of September 11, 2001 will have forever changed the American military. The campaign to follow would have the US Military fighting forces in two completely different environments. In Iraq, the battles would be primarily fought in a close-quarters urban environment. The Afghanistan Campaign, formally named Operation Enduring Freedom, would be fought in a drastically different environment. Both campaigns would be fought against an insurgent force as opposed to a uniformed army the United States military was accustomed to in previous wars. The Afghanistan theater of operation would present an enemy in an unforgiving terrain and a significantly long history of war fighting. This new enemy combined with
On February 23 the dreaded and long-awaited land war began. Dubbed “Operation Desert Storm,” it lasted only four days, the “100 hour war.” With lighting speed the U.N. forces penetrated deep into Iraq, outflanking the occupying forces in Kuwait and blocking the enemy’s ability either to retreat or to reinforce. Desert Storm was important, because it was the first major war between Iraq and the United States.
The Persian Gulf War, often referred to as Operation Desert Storm, was perhaps one of the most successful war campaigns in the history of warfare. Saddam Hussein, leader of Iraq, invaded Kuwait in 1990. In 1991, after weeks of air strikes, US ground forces entered Iraq and Kuwait and eliminated Iraqi presence in 60 hours.
Coalition Forces had reached manpower strength of an estimated 700,000 troops with an additional 540,000 United States troops, thought by Coalition Forces leadership, was well more than needed for the battle at that time (Brown, pg. 1). The initial strike was conducted between January 16 and January 17 1991 by the United States by conducting a massive air campaign on Iraqi troops, which would continue throughout the war (U.S.History.org, 2015). On 24 February, 1991 the Coalition offensive went from aerial to a ground offensive. The plan was to push through the Iraqi Forces while simultaneously placing a portion of the troops on the Euphrates River. The purpose of placing United States and Coalition troops on the Euphrates River, was to have a contingency in the event Iraqi reinforcements attempt to enter the area of operation (Brown, pg. 1). In the end, the Iraqi Forces were surprised by air and on land with superior technology on United States Fighter planes and Global Positioning Systems on land. The casualties on the Iraqi Army were at an estimates 60,000 soldiers killed and 150,000 soldiers captured and imprisoned. The casualties on the United States and Coalition Forces were less than 500 soldiers. (Davis pg.
The Desert Storm or as some know, the Persian Gulf War, took place in August of 1990. Saddam Hussein, the leader of Iraq was the main person involved in the start of the war. The war included many allied countries, they included a big part of the Middle East, Canada, United States and the United Kingdom and many more. After lasting 100 hours the war ended on February 28th, 1991 (The Gulf War,1991)

American military use of force in the First Gulf War began on 17 January 1991, eight days after peace talks between United States Secretary of State James Baker and Iraqi Foreign Minister Tariq Aziz proved unproductive. General Norman Schwarzkopf along with General Colin Powell became military figureheads while also gaining a sort of celebrity status back stateside. Western media portrayed the Iraqi army as a truly formidable enemy; however, Coalition forces made short work out of Hussein’s military (USHistory.org). Although the United States spearheaded the operation, 34 other states assisted by providing personnel and financial support. Some notable Coalition partners were Australia, Canada, Britain, France, and Syria (Klein, 2003).
