Professionalism is your character, your personality, your spirit. More so, it is a unique, inspiring, quality to have, which makes you a valuable asset in the work place. If you are professional in the work place, you are on time, neatly dressed, clean and well groomed. You are thorough, accurate, and efficient. You do your job to the best of your ability and your work is complete before leaving for the day.

A very common definition of professionalism is “the competence or skill expected of a professional” but to me professionalism is to behaving as a responsible individual, while staying away from immature attitudes at professional sating. Professionalism is some thing that you learned by adhering to work place standard of professionalism. However, there are certain universal professionalism behavior that is accepted from an individual whenever they enter work environment.

According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary “professionalism” is “skill, good judgment, and polite behavior that is expected from a person who it trained to do a job well” or “conduct, aims, or qualities that characterize or mark a profession or a professional person” (Merriam-Webster, 2015). Applying this to nursing, how do you see “skill, good judgment, and polite behavior”, or mark the “conduct, aims, or qualities” that make a nurse a professional (Merriam-Webster, 2015)? Dr. Tim Wilkinson, “Associate Dean of Medical Education at the University of Otago” sought to define “professionalism” with two of his colleagues (Collier, 2012). According to Glasper, professionalism is something that everyone in the field can help to fortify. Professionalism is based on several key facets which include: accountable, advocate, leader, and competent. (Glasper, 2017) These are key factors that do go into professionalism.

What is Professionalism? When first thinking about this one might conjure up images of professional athletes such as, Steph Curry, Cam Newton or Sidney Crosby. Others might think of of professionals in the arts, perhaps Yo-Yo Ma or Michelangelo. While each of them are professionals in their respected field, this paper will be discussing professionalism in the workplace. Professionalism comes down to two basic ideas: treat others with respect and give your work the respect it deserves. Joshua De Vera Bautista said it best when he said, “Since you cannot always carry and display your diploma. Kindly act like you have one. Professionalism. Include that to your dictionary.” The goal is for everyone to be seen an outstanding employee and acting professional helps tremendously with that, especially with a first impression.

In a hospital you see doctors, nurse, lab techs, counseling and patients all in a building together. They all work together in harmony to treat the patients that they are assigned to. Have you ever seen a nurse bad mouth a patient or a doctor? Besides the movies and TV shows, everyone in the hospital are respectful and courteous to other around them. But what makes all these professions work well together without being disrespectful to each other? That 's right professionalism. To be professional in the work place is important for many reason such as providing a safe, mannerly environment for the patients and staff working in that environment. Some types of professionalism in the medical workplace are how to communicate appropriately with each other, respecting others and maintaining being professional. Each plays an important role in making safe and respected medical workplace.

Professionalism to me is shown by someone who provides safe, ethical , and efficient patient care. A nurse demonstrates professionalism by showing unbiased care and showing equality to all individuals. Professionalism is also obtained by providing culturally competent care to patients that acknowledges culture demands.

There are a lot of qualities that a nurse can exhibit when in the workplace. Many of these qualities can have a strong effect on patients and the connection a nurse can make with them. One of the qualities all nurses, and health care providers in general, should possess is a high standard of professionalism. Professionalism is “a specific style or behavior in the workplace” (Campbell) which is an umbrella with so many factors that fall under it and contribute to it. Some of these factors are different attributes and behaviors, some are the way a nurse approaches the patient, and some have to do with a code that the nurse follows everyday when they are working as a nurse. Professionalism is an important factor in building trust with patients, and this can be done in the code of ethics that the nurse holds themself to and in the ways the nurse interacts with patients.

Professionalism is acting in a way that respects you and your colleagues in the workplace. Being a student, my colleagues are my fellow classmates, as well as the teachers and doctors of the school. There are many adjectives that describe how to be professional, but the few that I consider the most important are dependable, respectful, and committed.

I define professionalism as a higher level of expectation by a professional. I strive to be professional at all times. I feel it strongly reflects the person I am. There are multiple ways to achieve a level of professionalism that’s appropriate. Speaking courteous

In an ever increasing competitive workforce, there are very few characteristics that separate a professional from the rest. The term professional is not only inclusive of the knowledge or the skill level a person possesses but also the attitude, conduct and the environment they create in the workplace. While, most of the employers are looking for professional with knowledge and skill in their field, but they also are also looking for a member who can be an effective team player and possess a good communication skill. Although, these skills were the basis of business management and hospitality industry, they have been increasingly required in health care industry and have become and important aspect for job seekers in healthcare.

Although there is no one definition of professionalism, it can be summarized as the level of excellence that is expected of individuals as well as rational work behaviour. In my opinion, professionalism is vital in the workplace, most importantly noted by; management of workplace relations, personal presentation and open communication.

In order to be considered a professional nurse, one must encompass a particular set of values. As a nurse, one of the many goals is to provide quality care for the client throughout the course of treatment. The quality care has varied throughout nursing history and is always being evaluated. According to the 2012 HealthLeaders’s survey, “72% of nurses rank patient satisfaction and experience as one of their top three priorities.” (http://www.healthleadersmedia.com). If the care is not client-centered, patient experience and satisfaction ratings will be lower. Doing the right thing in a situation is a reflection of the nurse’s character and judgment. Displaying altruism is having concern for people and giving of yourself to help them.
