Professionalism is the skill set that society expects of a professional. For a nurse, professionalism is not merely knowing how to take someone’s temperature or how to administer medication. It goes beyond that and consists, not only of job competence, but also includes personal and ethical dimensions. Professionalism requires job knowledge, accountability, advocacy, communication, and ethical decision making. Knowledge is the foundation of professionalism, but accountability establishes trust in the profession. Davis (2017) defines accountability as being “answerable to oneself and others for one's own actions.” This means that when a nurse engages in an activity on the job, she/he will be responsible for the outcome and might suffer negative consequences if her/his actions are careless or reflect poor judgement. Accountability provides a motivation for all professionals to perform well. Most people who are passionate about their profession have an internal desire to perform well, but accountability to one’s colleagues and patients provides an important external motivator to perform well. It has several dimensions, and even a short essay cannot begin to fully address all of the aspects that define professional behavior. The cornerstone of professionalism will always be professional knowledge. Without it, the person cannot even function in the work environment. Professionalism is your character, your personality, your spirit. More so, it is a unique, inspiring, quality to have, which makes you a valuable asset in the work place. If you are professional in the work place, you are on time, neatly dressed, clean and well groomed. You are thorough, accurate, and efficient. You do your job to the best of your ability and your work is complete before leaving for the day.
A very common definition of professionalism is “the competence or skill expected of a professional” but to me professionalism is to behaving as a responsible individual, while staying away from immature attitudes at professional sating. What is Professionalism? When first thinking about this one might conjure up images of professional athletes such as, Steph Curry, Cam Newton or Sidney Crosby. Others might think of of professionals in the arts, perhaps Yo-Yo Ma or Michelangelo. In a hospital you see doctors, nurse, lab techs, counseling and patients all in a building together. They all work together in harmony to treat the patients that they are assigned to. Have you ever seen a nurse bad mouth a patient or a doctor? Besides the movies and TV shows, everyone in the hospital are respectful and courteous to other around them. But what makes all these professions work well together without being disrespectful to each other? That 's right professionalism. To be professional in the work place is important for many reason such as providing a safe, mannerly environment for the patients and staff working in that environment. Some types of professionalism in the medical workplace are how to communicate appropriately with each other, respecting others and maintaining being professional. Professionalism to me is shown by someone who provides safe, ethical , and efficient patient care. A nurse demonstrates professionalism by showing unbiased care and showing equality to all individuals. There are a lot of qualities that a nurse can exhibit when in the workplace. Many of these qualities can have a strong effect on patients and the connection a nurse can make with them. One of the qualities all nurses, and health care providers in general, should possess is a high standard of professionalism. Professionalism is “a specific style or behavior in the workplace” (Campbell) which is an umbrella with so many factors that fall under it and contribute to it. There are many adjectives that describe how to be professional, but the few that I consider the most important are dependable, respectful, and committed.

The term professional is not only inclusive of the knowledge or the skill level a person possesses but also the attitude, conduct and the environment they create in the workplace.
