Earth homes have proven to be very strong and to last for centuries without a problem. For example, Ibn Khaldon’s house, a Muslim sociologist lived about 9 centuries ago, can be seen today in Fez, Morocco. Another example is the Ramesseum in Thebes, Egypt (Hawthorn). According to Auroville Earth Institute in India, this is the oldest building on Earth, being preserved for 3300 years (Hawthorn). The reason why mud building construction is very strong is the straw in the mixture that holds the building as one part, making it powerful and long-lasting (“14 characteristics”).
During the 19th century, Malaya had been colonised by the British and many Chinese and Indian had migrates to Malaya. As a city, Kuala Lumpur had become the most crowded and fast development place. Many colonial and migrations stay at Kuala Lumpur. Through colonisation and migration, both knowledge and methods of house construction had been adapted to the Malaya architecture during that time. Therefore there are many heritage buildings especially the Chinese shop houses had been influence by the foreign design.
As individuals, we all have multifarious requirements for the buildings we use and the places we live in, work and socialise in needs to mirror this diversity. In other words, to suit whatever purpose we require from the structure and to make sure it functions as the designer envisaged.

Over the years, man has evolved from regarding shelter as just a basic need of protecting himself from adverse weather conditions and his predators, to become a sophisticated aspect the more complicated life with economic and social attachments. Unlike during the earlier days when basic construction was required for shelter, construction has further incorporated new and important aspects of modern man. It has become a subject of learning in schools and is considered among the important sectors in modern economy. Traditionally, timber was the main material used to anchor buildings. However, the limited length of wood coupled with the complexity and enormity of modern buildings has called for the need for more innovation and use of appropriate material (Jernkontoret, et al, 2012). Further, other aspects that have become important within the last decade such as environmental impact have come to play. With the increased population and finite land resource, it has become important to ensure that the constructions live longer and remain stable. The strength is important to ensure that these constructions can handle their sizes and the weight that they would be subjected to. In some regions and instances in the world, the constructions have had to consider environmental aspects and calamities such as floods, hurricanes and earthquakes. With these factors in mind, construction experts have always sought to use the strongest available material in their work. Among the
After meeting in Indonesia, John Hardy and his wife Cynthia conceived of the ‘green school,’ an educational village community amongst the jungle and rice fields of Bali, to spread their sustainable altruistic message through an alternative education system to locals and foreigners alike. They called on Balinese practice PT bamboo pure to work out the technical design aspects of the entirely bamboo structure. The plentifully supplied Asian wood was utilized to benefit from the potential of all its properties to become structural, decorative, recreational, used as flooring, seating, tables, and several other fixtures. The local vernacular finds a new relationship fused with contemporary design strategies throughout the assembly of
‘Identification of Malay vernacular spatial features within vernacular houses’ by Ghaffarian Hoseini is an analysis of the third International Conference on Arts in Society. The use of local building materials to construct housing that makes such good use of passive energy that almost no extra energy is required to maintain the housing is another remarkable feature of vernacular architecture. In other words, vernacular architecture provides the local inhabitants with a comfortable living environment while at the same having minimum impact on the natural environment.

The survival of heritage buildings in Malaysia has been extremely under threat for quite some time now. A large number of heritage buildings are decaying due to age, neglect, and high maintenance cost while many have been destroyed during the building boom of the 1970s. Moreover, large scale urban development continues to jeopardize their existence. Mustapa et al (2007) noted that destroying heritage buildings is as good as wiping out historical memories. He affirmed that conserving these buildings became necessary in order to avert an ugly scenario of losing the nations’ historical and architectural memories.
Conservation of heritage building in Malaysia started in 1970s where the first building to be preserved is the Central Market building In Kuala Lumpur (Harun,2011). In 1988 Malaysia have become member of UNESCO`s Convention Concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage. Since then more and more building have been conserved and restored with the references and guidance of international charters. National Museum, 1992, heritage building inventory study estimated approximately 35,000 buildings before war should be conserved in 265 cities survey, (Zuraidi, 2011). Undoubtedly these building are important in determine the historical past of the national but given the age of the building at present, this structure will not be standing for too long unless proper maintenances work and identification of historical building may contributed to decaying of building thus resulting to decrement in the number of historical building
