I’m currently in an outpatient clinic at Children’s National Medical Center (CNMC), so more than in inpatient; the patient care is a bit more fragmented. There is front desk staff that checks the patient in upon arrival; a nurse then calls each back to be seen. I’m in a cardiac unit, so after each patient is properly checked in, they are asked to wait for further testing before the practitioners can examine the patient. Some of these tests include, echocardiogram and stress tests and specific lab work. But I do feel once the physicians and nurses see their patient, their needs are the main focus. We practice therapeutic communication and use open-ended questions. I’ve also notice reflective listening to be used as well.
Core competency two requires that social workers apply ethical principles into practice. This core competency relates to the experiences that I had through my classes and internship. I will be illustrating how I applied specific practice behaviors to artifacts. The first practice behavior associated with this competency is demonstrating leadership in applying ethical reasoning for problem resolution. For me, this involved a release of health information form that I had to provide to another agency regarding a patient. In order for such a goal to be achieved, all healthcare disciplines must integrate interventions/treatment plans and work collectively to provide continuous care. In my opinion if I had to choose a competency that is the most important I would choose clinical judgment. I would choose this not because I don’t think that advocacy & ethics, professionalism, collaboration, system thinking, cultural competence, facilitation of learning, and communication aren’t important. Although I found the CPA Horizon Report to be very informative, I do not feel that the report, itself, will directly assist accountants to provide their managers the right information, at the right time and in the correct format. In my opinion, the report reiterates the core values and competencies of CPAs. It discusses how these will not change, they are simply being built upon via emerging changes. The biggest change, would be the impact that technology has made; it has changed how CPAs work, and where they work. Because of technology the path of CPAs is changing.
