Establishing equality by lowering the cost of college tuition My research question was stimulated by “The Life of Peasants” from Life on a Medieval Barony and A Letter to my Nephew by James Baldwin. Throughout both articles equality and the idea of class systems are discussed thoroughly. James Baldwin talked about integration as meaning “we with love shall force our brothers to see themselves as they are, to cease fleeing from reality and begin the change it, for this is your home” (Baldwin). Baldwin talks about the importance of integration and how integration can create equality. In his eyes, one can succeed by integrating and defeating the classic stereotypes, one can change his or her name for the better. Going along with class systems is “The Life of Peasants” by William Stearns Davis. In the article, class systems are mentioned throughout and the people at the bottom are the forgotten ones. The article reads, “Assuredly the poor and humble seem much less interesting and command less attention. They have no splendors, no picturesque, fêtes or feuds” (Davis). The poor are referred to as unimportant just like the African Americans in Baldwin’s letter to his nephew. The talk about equality and the class systems led me to ask, if America lowered the cost of college tuition, would that help create equality for all Americans in the school system? America should decrease the cost of college tuition and in turn increase the equality among American citizens of all economic
At a young age many people learned if presenting a problem, they must have a solution other wise the problem becomes an empty complaint. Has anyone complained about inequality? Does everyone treat people equally? Many people protest their thoughts on inequality. Some do not understand the problem, since they stand higher up in the food chain of wealth. Glenn Reynolds, professor, writer, and blogger wrote an interesting piece talking about ideas and his thoughts on how to make the world treat and think of each other equally. His article goes into many specify ideas that help pursued his audience. Mr. Reynolds builds his argument by staying on topic, provides different numbers surveyed, and strong ideas on how to change the problem.
In America, the land of the free, people believe that it’s the greatest place to be. And America would probably be what everyone believes, but it has a very serious problem that could eventually destroy the country as whole. America is built upon Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, but it has a strong equality issue that has to be taken care of. Equality is a social contract in America and unfortunately it is a broken one. A social contract is an agreement amongst the members of a society, but equality is a serious issue. Equality poses the biggest problem to America simply because in any country the people make the country, and if the people can’t get along either internal conflicts occur, or people eventually leave. Throughout America everyone regardless of race, color, or sexual orientation has experienced inequality in some part of America. Words are exchanged, fists are thrown, and in serious cases lives are lost because people are racists to one another. Equality is a broken social contract in America that will eventually be its demise if not attended to.
As shown, there are strong arguments for and against free college. Thompson, Golden and Katz provided strong evidence that free college would be beneficial. However, the case against free college is more convincing. As shown earlier, free college for all will not proportionally help poorer students. That is wealthy students who do not need assistance will gain the same advantage. Not all students want to go to college or would benefit from it. Yet, these same people will be required to pay for free college through their taxes. There is little evidence that free college will increase graduation rates as more unqualified students enter the college system. Finally, and maybe most important, the resources are not available to ensure students receive
If I were to ask you what class in the United States you were, would you want to, or be able to answer that? This is a very relevant topic put forth by Gregory Montsios in his work, Class in America. Montsios argues that the United States should either recognize class, or recognize that class is not relevant to the betterment of our great nation. He continues this argument by putting forth several myths and explanations for the way that class is seen in America. After this, he talks about different realities that are put before us, and how it affects our nation. I believe that in America today, class is not important, but can be skewed to make it to where some people have to follow different rules for different reasons, so I think class shouldn’t be recognized due to this.
The reports will also address how much College for All will cost taxpayers and what the return on this investment will be. The overall goal of this endeavor is to ensure that the United States has the skilled workforce and educated citizenry to achieve inclusive prosperity and economic growth. College for All is radically student centric and will significantly increase the college attainment among students from low and moderate income families.
Today’s education system has its problems, one of the problems being equal education to everyone. This is a problem that can be seen in the more poverty areas in the United States. Most schools in poverty areas have older materials to work with, teachers who are less passionate about their jobs, are not being taught the humanities, and many of the schools are shutting down from poor conditions and low attendance.
A college education is the road to get out of poverty. However it is expensive, and the lower class can not always afford it. It seems like the rich get a good education and remain rich for generations, while the the poor can not pay to get an education, so they remain poor for generations. The gap between rich and poor would get bigger if this trend was real, but the government wants to give everyone a chance to pursue happiness, so there are many scholarships and grants the poor can get to get a good education. Now there is a question whether college tuition should be based on income? No it should not because all this would do is hurt the rich, the poor already get a plentiful help to get whatever education they want.
In the fall of 2017 about 3.6 million students were expected to graduate from high school in the United States. In the same year, 20.4 million adults in the United States were expected to attend an american college or university (NCES fast facts tool). Almost five times the amount of students expected to graduate high school were attending a source of higher education. From these statistics I came to the understanding that there are many people who don’t go to college right after high school or who are going back to college after a break. A big reason behind taking some time between highschool to college or not going at all can be due to the high price for higher education, “For the 2015–16 academic year, the average annual price for undergraduate tuition, fees, room, and board was $16,757 at public institutions, $43,065 at private nonprofit institutions” (NCES fast facts tool). For some this may not be difficult to afford, however the national average income for Americans was $43,642.15 in that same year (2016)(Sue Kunkel). Consider a family of five who makes the national average of $48,640, trying to put three kids through college at the same time. It would be difficult to successfully put all three kids through unless they were given scholarships or financial aid. I think that it is misguiding to reward only successful high schoolers with higher education opportunities because then we aren’t making education a priority
I consider college football as a job not just a sport. The players would not just enjoy the sport but adjust to college, socially and economically. Keolanui says, “A good portion of these players are trying to adjust as well and feel inferiority in more ways we care to realize. The fame and prestige that comes from being a big college football star goes a long way towards helping many of these players overcome any social economical disparity.” Going into a new school is a new place of environment for the players and getting paid would only influence the players to do better on the field but in classes as well. As many people know college is genuinely expensive and the action of getting paid would help relieve worries with the few expenses college
A quick look around at any city in America shows that society is far from perfect. Few things in life are fair and this is very evident in wealth distribution, the job market, and education. As a whole, America is very reluctant to implement drastic changes to fix problems that plague civilization as a whole. America is not living up to its full potential as a society and something needs to be done to make sure that America remains in a position as a world superpower. A college education should be a right for all people; therefore, college tuition should be completely subsidized as long as students meet a set GPA requirement for the program they are enrolled in and comply with a pre-determined behavioral contract.
If there was less tuition we would have more people who want an education and be able to get jobs in higher levels and could potentially solve other economic problems. Many do not attend college because of the cost. If there was less tuition we would have more people who want an education and be able to get jobs in higher levels and could potentially solve other economic problems. Many do not attend college because of the cost. If there was less tuition we would have more people who want an education and be able to get jobs in higher levels and could potentially solve other economic problems. This will help students who take advantage of the opportunity that free college can give everyone and help people who are not financially able to get the education they want or deserve. However there are various reason why this cannot happen on a large scale. Due to high increase in taxes and the simple fact that college is competitive therefore those who attend college and graduate are considered highly educated and respected more than
Education continues to produce class inequality due to standardized tests, specifically the SAT. The SAT is a standardized test in the United States that is used to evaluate students and provides a chance for students to obtain scholarships and admission into colleges. However, while everyone is provided an opportunity to take this test, research has been done to show that there is a positive relationship between income and test score. As the income increases, there is roughly a 12 point increase in score for every test section in the SAT. By implementing SAT into colleges and scholarships, education itself is empowering those who are already wealthy to get into better colleges or receive scholarships. Education reproduces class inequality by giving students the same opportunity to succeed but not exactly giving students a fair opportunity to succeed.
In this great nation of ours, we can provide freedom for all races cultures and ethics, rights for everybody from every corner of the world, democracy, the opportunity for people with the fire in their hearts to start a business, and equality. Could there be a country so magnificent? The answer to that question is yes, that country is America, the land of the free and the home of the brave. But I worry that the dream of all of this might be in danger to those that don’t know life outside of America.
Classism is real and its effects can be felt in virtually every aspect of society. Public school is not free of its reigns. Wealthier students are significantly more likely to receive a better foundational education than their poorer classmates; students in urban schools frequently have
Many believe that the greatest source for a nations strength is to provide equal education for all of its students. However, are we as educators short-changing our female students? I believe the answer to this question is an undeniable, Yes! There are different ways and methods to change this problem in our society; hence we must first examine the source of the corruption.
