Ever wondered what it would be like to live during the Renaissance? A lot of people wonder the same thing. The term 'renaissance ' is derived from the French word meaning “rebirth". It is used to describe this phase of European history because many of the changes experienced between the 14th and 16th centuries were inspired by a revival of the classical art and intellect of Ancient Greece and Rome. Yet there are some similarities, marriages were also very different than they are these days. Marriages back then were arranged, which meant the woman didn 't have a choice who she was going to marry because her family decided this for her. “Marriage in renaissance times was viewed completely different than marriage in today’s day and age. One difference is that marriage in the renaissance was often not built on love but would be arranged by the families. Many times as in the case of nobility, marriages were arranged as a way to reach social and political gain (Anderson).”
People in the renaissance also believed that women were created by God with the sole purpose of serving and obeying men. After marriage, a woman’s body and possessions became the property of her husband. A man was supposed to consummating the marriage and transform his wife from a virgin to a woman, ideally with a pregnancy. Once a woman lost her virginity to her husband, the consummated marriage was permanent. This is very different from today because women have a choice of who they want to marry and marriage is hardly permanent. Also, widowers aren 't as common now as they were then. This was because then, husbands were on average fourteen years older than the women.

Women had great social pressure on them to marry. Young girls were often married by the age of 13 or 14 . It was socially unacceptable if women were not married by the age of 25 . Marriage was mostly for economic benefits, not romantic situations. A wedding, rather than a religious ceremony, was a civil contract that set the responsibilities and duties of husband and wife . Once married, they legally became one with their husbands. Married women had no control of their earnings, inheritance, property, and also could not appear in court as a witness nor vote . Life during the Renaissance is very different from the 21st century life when it came to our daily routines, our meals, and even how we spend our free time. During that period only some kids had to go to school and people had a way they went about wear their clothes. For food there was not a lot of options for and entertainment was available only during their free time.
During the renaissance they did some things a little different, between the way they talked, the way they lived, and the way that realtionships worked back then it was completely different. In relationships it was always what the guy wanted, it was never what the girl wanted because girls had no power at all. Then the girls family, mostly the male figures in her life had control over her and then thats when the guys had to start asking the fathers if they could marry their daughter. It took a great deal of time for girls to gain any power, girls had absolutely no say in who they were going to end up being with and that sounds weird because that is nothing like what people go through today. Before this time there was the Middle Ages. Then it was not a good time at all, it was full of sickness, disease, death, and the plague it killed almost half of Europe’s population. After the plague slowly decreased the population in Europe started to grow. Lots of new things started to happen. Like Bankers Merchants, and Tradespeople had a new market for their services.
