Evil is a subject on which most tread lightly, saying what they think is true and not questioning what it is. Who decides what is evil? Perhaps no one thing is completely evil. Perhaps each person decides what is evil in his eyes. One person might believe that someone is evil, and another person might believe that the same someone is good. This would mean that evil is relative depending on where you live, who you are, or what you believe. For example, Kim Jong Il, the dictator of North Korea, is evil in the eyes of most Americans, but those who live under his rule praise him above nearly everything. But then, are some things truly evil? If those in North Korea would see the world from our eyes, would they not think the dictator evil? So maybe
Evil in this context is regarding to all suffering, pain and horror. Evil can be categorized as natural evil and moral evil. Natural evil is that which occurs by natural means e.g. earthquakes, tsunamis etc. Moral evil is that which is imposed on humans by humans e.g.
By definition, evil is an act or feeling that is “profoundly immoral and malevolent”. The problem is that evil is a subjective term. Each person sees evil differently.
All throughout our history, we have come to label events, object and people as either good or evil/bad. We tend to believe that the world itself is driven by good forces and evil ones. Since this is a term we often take for granted, it should not be debatable, and all of us should have the same concept about it. Sadly enough that is not true. Societies and culture shape our understanding of evil.
What makes a person, an object, or an event evil? Does it have to be associated with a devil, demon, or an evil force? When something is evil, is it determined to be by intuition or the morals that we are taught? Evil is defined as something profoundly immoral and malevolent. Whether or not one believes evil to be associated with some sort of supernatural being or an instinct, one can agree that if an action of another is affecting a
The most influential definition of evil is nicely summarised by Swinburne proclaimed when discussing about evil, context is very important factors to consider when talking about the subject of evil he said evil include physical pain, for
Evil, as mentioned before, is commonly referred to the act or actions that go directly against what is to be considered good. Good, or a set or morals and believes, have differed between the many generation that have existed over time. One must properly understand that what they believe to be pure evil could be seen as doing the right thing in the eyes of others. Evil has a very bias perception to its definition, but is always measured by the same means no matter where what and when it is describes. Evil is the
As seen on Pollingreport.com, Quinnipiac University published a poll on North Korea. Using a sample size of1482 registered voters, with a margin of error ± 3, voters were provided 3 answers for 6 questions. In addition, the poll contained trends on the issue. On the question regarding confidence in the President’s handling of the issue, there had been a steady decrease in confidence from 42% on August 15, to 40% on October 10. In terms of no confidence, the increase was negligible (Quinnipiac University). On the question regarding to the resolution of North Korea, there had been a massive dip in those that wished for a diplomatic resolution from 60% on August 15 to 54% on October 10. On the need for force, the amount of people that
At the onset of the Cold War, between the United States and the Soviet Union, the people of Korea could not have foreseen the critical role their relatively small nation would play in world affairs over proceeding generations. The separation and subsequent rise of the North Korean state has given rise to, what is widely considered the most oppressive regime in modern history. This regime, unfortunately, has managed to gain control of some of the most destructive weaponry known to humanity. The people of North Korea are captives to the imaginations of its dictatorial leadership and unless the great efforts for reform receive pressure from without or within,
How did North Korea become the cruel country that scorches both surrounding and distant nations with its sternly severe socialist flame? Subjugated by Japan in 1910, North Korea was mercilessly enslaved for thirty-five years. Due to Japan's defeat in World War II in 1945, the United States occupied the southern region of the Korean Peninsula while Soviet troops seized the north. As a result communism spread like weeds. Sadly, North Korea's government, military, and economy were all by shaped by the leftist views suppressed on them. The root of the problem was Kim Il-Sung, the first premier of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. At the urging of the United States, the United Nations General Assembly established elections, introduced a constitution, and formed the Republic of Korea in South Korea.
I believe that for evil to exist one must also believe that good also exists. But, something like this is subjective. An example can be seen in religion. One could argue that some religions are based on the fact that for good to exist it must conquer the war with evil. Two sides to one argument. Someone could steal bread for their family but in the context of the law and some minds would be seen as, "evil". Some minds might also see war to be the product of evil. Other believe war to a product of man that will and always will happen due to our violent nature. Evil is subjective to how it's viewed based upon prior experiences.
When we think of the word ‘evil’ we think bad, wrong, sinful. How do we know what is evil? We are born pure and sin free, we are also born into the world that our mother gives us, it is up to her on how she makes us see the world as we are young. Many of the murders these days come from a family full of neglect, or maybe an abusive home Which could be the cause of the sinful things they commit later on in life. A family full of problems and hate can make you carry hate in your heart which could potentially then turn you evil. Then again, What really is evil and good? It all depends on what you think in your head, Some people have small amygdala, which affects their ability to have empathy for others. That is the neurological reason for people
Today, I am unable to answer the following question: What is evil? According to Vardy and Arliss (2003),"Evil is one of the deepest and most central problems of human existence—a problem that every individual and every age must face for itself" (p.6). I am fully aware that every human being on earth faces problems that are evil; however, how do we truly know if something is evil or not? For example, in high school I was taught that Hitler was an evil man, despite working hard to make Germany a powerful country: "He aimed to restore dignity to the German people after they lost the First World War" (Vardy and Arliss, 2003, p.7). If Hitler cared about the German people, then why is he considered to be the evilest man ever to live? —think about the Holocaust. (Vardy and Arliss). How do we define evil without being a hypocrite?—I did not think about this before. For instance, the Roman Catholic Church does not approve of artificial birth control and sex before marriage—these are evil acts. (Vardy and Arliss). Yet, in the 21st Century, there are Roman Catholics who do not consider such acts to be evil. (Vardy and Arliss). To conclude, as I continue to read The Thinker's Guide to Evil. I hope to get a better understanding of the meaning of evil and how not to think like a
Evil is not everything bad or misfortunate that happens in the world, it is something planned to purposely inflict harm on others. Although it might seem right to explain every misdeed as life is not that
So, what is evil? Is it Hitler's near annihilation of the Jewish people during World War II or the senseless massacre at Ti'enneman Square on mainland China? Again we turn to Webster's dictionary, which states evil as causing distress or harm, a source of sorrow, and the fact of suffering, misfortune, and wrongdoing. (Merriam-Webster) Evil would be any intention to cause an undesirable effect upon one's self or on another person. So by saying that the intentions of a person are not to cause good we automatically assume that they are out to cause evil.
