Since July 4th, 1776, the United States have been a formidable foe on the battlefield. Taking on forces at home, and abroad, the United States emerges victorious time, and time again. This is not attributed to one person alone. This strength can be attributed to the brave souls of the United States military. We have the Army, and Airforce. Yet, there is one branch that sets itself apart from them both. One that emerged out of the womb of the Navy. That branch, is the United States Marines. From the halls of Montezuma, to the shores of Tripoli, the Marines have been there and conquered it. Though, The Marine Corps was not always known as the tough band of guns the United States had. Like all things, the Marines had a beginning. And quite a beginning it was. This is the story of how the United States Marines changed, and grew over the years. …show more content…
The Marines were founded november 10th 1775. This was a decision made by the continental congress. The goal was to designate two battalions of Marines for sea, and land operations. Along with that came the first commandant of the Marines. Major Samuel Nicholas led the first operations the Marines ever went on. The Marines also work closely with the Navy, as they are a part of them. Marines act as the infantry for the Navy. Working with sailors, yet acting under a separate entity known as Marines. In addition, the Marines grew the years following the american revolution. At the beginning of the 1800’s, the Marines numbered 368 personnel. The decade closed with 523 personnel. By the 1900’s, the Marines had greatly increased in capacity. The start of the decade saw 3,142 Marines operating, and ending with 9,696. The Marines gained personnel as the years dragged on. Chain of command switched every few
The Marine Corps does two things: make marines and win our nation’s battles. Winning battles depend on how well we make marines. Those who have earned the title have been polished and honed by attentive mentoring. We have to remember that to sustain the transformation
was signed, and the American Revolution came to an end, the Continental Marines disbanded, and were re-established on July 11, 1798, as the United States Marine Corps. One of the most famous deployments that the USMC has been a part of, were the operations against the Barbary pirates, along the
The Marines are a highly mobile amphibious attack force. Marines are trained to attack from the water and establish a beach head, an area of control on foreign soil. After the Marines take territory, other armed forces such as the US Army move in to maintain control, while the Marines move on. Marines are mobile, lightweight, and very rapid. I would compare the Marines to the head of the spear, wedging in to get a foothold and racing ahead once the land has been secured. In addition to acting as a lightweight attack force from the ocean, Marines are also perfectly capable of taking territory on land. Marines are trained for rapid deployment, and are often the first US military personnel on site. Marines also guard American embassies overseas, providing embassy security and safety. In volatile areas, being a Marine embassy guard is a very risky job.
The author points out various examples of the Corps short-comings throughout history. With the Marine Corps already struggling to stay atop its game, it didn’t shed positive light on the situations. With that said, it’s hard to point out the flaws of the Corps without also showing its achievements and how we can overcome any obstacle we are faced with.
In 1798, the Marines are reformed as the Unites States Marine Corps, with William Ward Burrows as the Second Commandant. Under the "Act for establishing and organizing a Marine Corps”, which was signed by President John Adams on July 11th 1798, the new Marine Corps was to be made up of a battalion of 500 privates, who would be lead by a Major and a group of Privates and NCOs. The next day, Burrows was promoted to the rank of Major.
The U.S. Marine Corps’ is thought to be one of the five free standing military departments, but in all actuality there is only three departments. The U.S. Army, U.S. Air Force, and the U.S. Navy are the only branches of the military that are correctly recognized as their own departments. There are two other Branches of the military that are under the U.S. Navy, one is the United States Marine Corps’. They were created to protect, but now they need protecting from budget cuts and disbanding. In order to protect the Corps’, they need to become their own U.S. Department, with their own funding and supplies.
First off i would like to state a well known quote known by all Marines, "Non Commissioned Officers (NCO's) are the backbone of the United States Marine Corps." Without the NCO's the Marine Corps could not function. This quote alone holds a great deal of history as well as gives a brief discription of what a Marine NCO truely is.
On November 10th, 1775 the Marine Corps was established in Tun Tavern during the Revolutionary War. Since that time, the Marines have played an important role in securing America’s freedom through countless battles. The Marines have distinguished themselves as an elite force specializing in military tactics which assist in defeating the enemy under any circumstance. The Marine Corps is a small branch with limited personnel which allows them the

First to Fight by Lieutenant General Victor H. Krulak is where the history, reputation, and truth about the United States Marine Corps meet. Throughout the decades, there has always been a rivalry between branches of the United States Armed Forces whether it is the army, navy, airforce or marines. Army is known as the most common and popular branch; It is very easy to be part of; It requires a short and uncomplicated bootcamp training (eight weeks); The staff is much less strict. On the other hand, we have the rival branch: the Marines. It requires soldiers to pass through the most insane and overwhelming bootcamp, with a length of about thirteen weeks; The staff is the strictest out of any Armed Force branch. The marines have less than half of the soldiers the army has, yet, they are still the toughest, scariest, deadliest, and most tactical branch of the entire U.S. Armed

The United States Congress sees the Marines as very frugal. This is another point that has kept the Marines here throughout the last two hundred years. They have been able to get into the Seminole War and the Mexican War because the Commandant told the President Marines would be cheaper to use than the Army. Under Commandant Lejeune the Marines actually returned money to the Treasury at the end of the fiscal year. From uniform items to equipment, compared to the other branches, all have been cheaper or out modeled. Finally in 1954 the Department of Defense engaged in a massive standardization program. Contracting and Manufacturing were consolidated but the Supply Depot still sits where it always has as a testament to the frugality of Marines over generations.
