I could hardly contain my excitement of going fishing for the first time in five years, I even had the proverbial butterflies fluttering in my stomach. I felt like a little kid wanting to ask “are we there yet” every five minutes. I tried distracting myself with reading, but I just kept reading the sentences over and over not understanding their meaning. I turned on the radio and that helped for a while until I started to get that nagging feeling that I had forgotten something. I pulled out the packing list I had shoved into my pocket before leaving, unfolded it and smoothed out the fold lines. My eyes followed down the list noting that all items were checked off; rods, reels, tackle box, vest, waders, sunglasses, hat, hooks, fishing line, lures, sinkers, bobbers, hook remover, Swiss army knife, wipes, and band aids. Everything was in order. Dismissing the feeling I had forgotten something, I turned to look out the window and watch the world pass by.
To the east the sky was dark with clouds heavy with rain, to the west, clearing skies with

“Whoo Hoo!” I exclaimed out loud. I could feel the eyes of my fishing partners on me as I slowly reeled in my catch, pointing the tip of my rod to the sky and then turning the handle on the reel while at the same time bringing the tip of the rod back down to the water. After three cycles the fish splashed, breaking the surface of the water causing ripples to form and circle out from him. With the tip of the rod nearly in the water I brought the fish closer to me until I was finally able to reach down and grab him. Carefully I placed my thumb in his mouth and pinched his bottom lip feeling his sandpaper like skin. I quickly removed the hook from his upper lip and while still holding on to his bottom lip raised him up in triumph for all to see the first fish I had caught in five
Throughout the day we enjoyed catching countless fish with our petite, freshwater lures, yet the surrounding fishermen never modified their methods of fishing so they also could experience the same enjoyment. They patiently waited while a rod, as thick as a broomstick and as long as a car, sat in front of them, bobbing with the current. Somewhere out in the ocean was their rig, a huge, crippled baitfish swimming around in little circles, struggling, just calling for some hungry beast to engulf it. Those fishermen never caught much, but when they did it was always a monstrosity, twenty pounds or more. Word had it that just a week earlier a man had even caught a one
My dad examines the pole and realizes that the pole has snapped about 8 inches above the reel. I think to myself that the trip must be over now. No fishing pole, no fish simple as that. “I know what we’ll do” my Dad says as he walks over to his green bag. He opens up a side pocket and picks out a shiny new hook.

Trying to take my fish off the line The rod could’ve left a blazing line of fire on my arm as it was trying to run away. My vigorous hands held the metal in place, I steadily rotated the reel until the monstrosity was almost in my perspective. “Get the trap ready!”

While fishing we did not talk much. Our only words we used were “got one,” which acted as our code words for “come over here and net this fish for me.” The person without a fish on always drops his rod and runs to the other side of the boat to help net the fish. Once Jackson did not even have to say a word. His drag started squealing, and I dropped my rod and ran to the front of the boat to net his fish.

Ever since my passion began in the 7th grade, the amazing people I have come across, stories I have heard, and memories I have made fishing are innumerable. A few of the many guys I have met fishing have become valuable mentors to me, which of whom I have bonded with and become closer to. I have shared lots of experiences by spending time and traveling with these men, shaping me as a person. As humans, we learn so much from one another, and through fishing I have learned not only many old traditions and modern fishing methods, but life skills that I use in my day-to-day
My brother picked it up and held it in front of me so Jay could take a picture of it. I remember feeling so accomplished with myself, the adrenaline rush I got is something I have never experienced before in my life and I really enjoyed the feeling. I smiled, as my brother threw it back in the water. “Good job Kenz, that was amazing!” My brother said as he high fived me. “You’re right,” I began, “Maybe fishing isn’t so bad after all.” I laughed as I went over to my pole and started to re bait it and did so the rest of the night, but may I say, that shark wasn’t just the catch of the night, but the catch of my life; hooking me on

Ever since I was a kid I have enjoyed fishing. Fishing relaxes my mind and allows me to get away from the stress of the real world. From the cool breeze around the lake to the fishes nibbling away at the bait, it’s all just very relaxing. There was one day where I caught more fish than I had ever caught before. The entire day had been going my way. My boss called me and gave me the day off and that alone is a good way to start your day. After getting the day off I was able to get a few extra hours of sleep. Being able to sleep in allowed me to get the some rest that I had not been able to get for a few weeks. After getting my well-deserved rest I decided to go to the pet store to get some fish bait. Fishing was not my original plan for that day but since I was able to get the day off and I didn’t have any other plans I was able to plan to do one of my favorite things.
After having to purchase bait fish for many years, I decided to get a cast net and try to catch my own shad for bait fish. It was an interesting, awkward and frustrating challenge for a while. I got wet, slipped and nearly fell a good many times. Thinking this through thoroughly, and understood that through perseverance and labor I could catch my own shad with a cast net. However, I was unacquainted with what to have for proper equipment or how to throw the net or where to catch the shad.
We just arrived at one of the famous fishing holes. Waves rolling over the rocks. We call it the walleye chop. We drop our lines down as fast as we could, like a rock vigorously skipping across the lake. When it finally hits bottom we give it two or three reels up. We turn the fish locator on and it glows with action at all of the fish. My face lit up knowing that fish are down there. We then drop the trolling motor down and gave the remote a few clicks. Slowly the boat glided into motion. As we troll along I gave my new pole a few jigs. My uncle says he has one on. Suddenly, there was tapping at the end of my fishing rod. I let some line out and the fish takes it. I gave it a pull and set the hook. My fish started running. I jerk it back into place; it was swimming my way. My heart began to race as it was inching closer to the boat. I pulled it out of the water and it was a nice 18 incher. Shining with beams of sunlight; I tossed him into the live well. I throw the branded line back down to get some
Those who are young with energy and risk takers, revel in a hearty chase. This so happens to occur in human nature, something unreachable seemingly captivate our attention, and in turn shadows us even more to grab at it. I know what we saw in each other in those numbered days. A sudden exhilaration for the opposite, with each passing day, we grew more intrigued by each other's mere presence and actions. Fishing was a trigger of our emotions, a connection surpassing physical attention, or mental attention. It was a unification of two souls borne from one
