The book was first published in 1843, a time when many of the wealthy people neglected the old Christmas spirit of charity. In addition, the Industrial Revolution had further done away with the simple pleasures of the season. Dickens’ intentions in writing ‘A Christmas Carol’ were not only linked to his childhood and sympathy for the poor, but he was also acting as a philanthropist by making an appeal to the rich people of society to mend their selfish ways.

Stave 1-Greed The theme presented to the reader the most in stave 1 of A Christmas Carol is greed. Throughout the book the theme of greediness is presented and backed up by the many sections that point out how much Scrooge strives to get more money. One of these parts is when it is pointed out that Scrooge won’t spend money on anything valuable, so his most valuable possession is his knocker. Another piece of evidence is when he only gives his clerk one piece of coal, and no more. The final piece of proof I have is that he could not part with a single coin to help the poor, and needy. Those were the main parts of stave 1 that emphasize the theme of greed.

I thought that the movie “A Christmas Carol” was better than the book. Movies provide better action and visual pictures. When watching a DVD you can actually see what is happening in the story and plot. When you read a book you have to use your imagination and visualize what's happening in your head. Although some movies can change the plot and sequencing of the original book, it is still fun to watch the movie and see how different or similar they are.

Camden Town is located in an area of northwest London. Charles Dicken’s (the author of A Christmas Carol) family lived at 16 Bayham Street in Camden Town.

Set up against the rampant industrialization of the 18th century, Charles Dickens classic novella “A Christmas Carol” endorses the notion that all people have a responsibility to ensure the safety and welfare of every member of society. By taking his seemingly irredeemable protagonist Ebenezer Scrooge on an other worldly journey. Dickens intends to convey to the complacent classes of the age, the necessity of various traits that are essential in life, such as the responsibility for those whom are less fortunate and other vital traits such as charity, generosity and simply caring for others. Dickens warns the reader of the consequences that will follow if these lessons are not taken into consideration.

Ebenezer Scrooge is a horrible man who is haunted by three spirits overnight in hopes to make a new man out of the old miser. Throughout this story, Ebenezer Scrooge is haunted by three spirits ,Christmas present, past, and future, and during this time he learns about his greed, what joy he missed on christmas, and that he had a chance to become better.

The theme I chose for the first stave of A Christmas Carol is selfishness. Scrooge on cared about himself during the holiday season, not anyone else. This made Christmas feel like it was just another day to Scrooge. On page 5, you can see that Scrooge doesn’t even care about his relatives, when his nephew tells Scrooge, “merry Christmas”, and Scrooge just says “Bah!”. Another example is on page 8, where Scrooge ignores the merry Christmas calls from everyone, and he responds back with “ Good afternoon!”. These examples show selfishness because Scrooge thinks about Christmas his own way, and doesn’t make anybody around him feel like it’s a special holiday. That’s why many of the people are hesitant to be near Scrooge, because they want to enjoy the holiday spirit.

Dickens’ ‘A Christmas Carol’ presents a warning to society through the representation of characters and the journey and transformation of the notorious miser, Ebenezer Scrooge. Dickens warns society of the grim future that awaits humanity if people fail to respond to the plight of the poor. Charles Dickens is one of the most renowned British writers with well-known and widespread work. Dickens was born in England in 1812 and died in 1870. During this time, Victorian England experienced an Industrial Revolution, which impacted his life tremendously. New factories and industrial machinery changed many lives of the lower class citizens. The family grew up impoverished and struggled to maintain a good lifestyle. The family’s financial situation was strained as John Dickens, Charles’s father, spent money that the family didn’t have. These societal factors were influential in Charles Dickens’s life, and the same themes present themselves in his works. When an author creates a work, frequently themes of their life events are incorporated into the theme of the book, consciously or unconsciously. Victorian Age industrial-influenced strife was a common theme in Dickens’s life and presented itself throughout Dickens’s books.

A morality play, not unlike some of the popular plays I have seen. I think we all have seen this familiar theme many times over the years. As we head into the Christmas season, where reflective thinking becomes this very theme. I can compare this play with some of these seasonal plays. The play that comes to my mind immediately is, "A Christmas Carol" by Charles Dickens.

The movie “A Christmas Carol” is better than the book. The book is a very descriptive christmas novel. The movie shows more feeling than the book did. The setting and lighting has set a better mood overall than the book.this is why the movie is better than the book.
