Exploring Psychology Careers
Although there is an inordinate amount of diverse types and areas of specialization in psychology, such as Clinical Neuropsychology and School Psychology, the overall idea is the study and research of the human mind and behavior. Psychology is known to aid those who suffer from a variety of mental illnesses while also helping people to comprehend better the mind and how exactly the brain operates; some believe such study is both ineffective and unethical. Majoring in psychology opens the door for various career opportunities since “there are over 200 classified forms of mental illnesses” that are “on a continuum of

It can be emotionally draining and stressful, but very rewarding. Psychology is a fascinating field because it is the study of the human mind and its functioning, making it is a great way to learn more about yourself and others. For someone who is interested in our minds, behaviors, and emotions and discovering why we are the way we are then a career in psychology is perfect. While learning about those around us psychology can help us to understand more about ourselves. A career in psychology is not for everyone, but for those who love to learn about human nature and the way our brains function then it is the ideal career.
The developmental of psychology has come a long way since Plato first suggested that the brain was the fundamentally responsible for our mental processing. From the suggestion that hypnosis was the cure for some mental illnesses to phrenology, which is a study of the shape and size of the brain as to reveal characteristics and mental abilities. Ernst Heinrich Weber shared his theory, Weber’s Law, and Charles Darwin expressed his views on evolution. The discovery that an area in the left frontal lobe plays a major role in language development and that damage to the area can cause inabilities to comprehend or produce language. G. Stanley Hall received the first American Ph.D. in psychology and later founded the American Psychological
The Psychology career I chose is Counseling Psychologist. A Counseling Psychologist are professionals “ who help individuals strengthen their mental health and get through common life problems with their home, job or social lives” (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2015, pg.1). Usually Counseling Psychologists find work at schools, businesses, hospitals or mental health clinics. They have to have an experience of a 1-2 year internship to qualify for a license but first they have to earn a Psy.D. The license these counselors obtain varies depending where they live and is needed to “ deliver mental health services and use the title ‘psychologist’” (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2015, pg.1).Counseling Psychologists have to have good communication skills and analytical skills. Annually, Counseling Psychologist earn about
Extensive schooling, mental and emotional preparation, and personal dedication are the aspects required to becoming successful in this career. Psychology is a hard study to master, and depending on what field of psychology a person may want to go into can make the task even more
My entire life I have always been on the search of a career that would fit my persona, fit who I truly am, and to become someone who will constantly have the ability to help people through their difficult problems that they face. Throughout my life I have been deemed the type of person that people felt comfortable coming to with their problems. Maybe people feel this way because they sense that I have a sympathetic ear? Well, all I can say is that human behavior has always seemed interesting to me and that is probably why I made the decision to go down the psychology career pathway.
There are many professional pathways within psychology that an individual may apply themselves to for their career. These include: clinical, forensic, health, and educational psychology. The professional career pathway within applied psychology which will be discussed in this essay is the field of clinical psychology. Clinical psychology aims to reduce the amount of psychological distress an individual experiences and enhance the promotion of psychological well-being. Clinical psychologists attend to both mental and physical health problems including addiction, anxiety, depression, learning difficulties and relationship issues in order to help individuals resolve their problems. Clinical psychologists predominantly work within hospitals, mental health groups and the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (Clinical | Careers, 2016).
“Few fields of study offer more career opportunities than does psychology” (Sternburg 3). There are a wide selection of specialties a person could go into with a bachelor’s degree in psychology. In graduate school, which is a must to attend, there is the option to explore the different specialities or to go into the desired specialty without any research of the others. There are also many options within a specific specialty. There is the option to be a teacher, to work for various organizations, be a speaker, to have your own practice, and many others. In the psychology field these options can all be combined. In fact it is expected of psychologists to do more activities involving their specialty than solely sit in an office and listen to patients. There are two specialities that I am interested in however, over the years, these specialties have become very similar. Clinical and counseling psychology have evolved to become one in the same. Someone who specializes in clinical psychology are more
Clinical psychology is just one of the many subfields that psychology has to offer. Those who choose to enter clinical psychology aim to help people with addiction, emotional stress, mental illness, or any other type of mental problems. Knowing what a clinical psychologist does in their practice is important in understanding their profession. A clinical psychologist's education is the most prominent part of their career; without it, they cannot be considered a psychologist. The process and requirements of employment for psychologists are scattered, varying from state to state, as well as their salary and where they may be employed. The future and growth of clinical psychology can only be
Landrum, R. E., & Davis, S. F. (2014). The Psychology Major: Career Options and Strategies
Psychology has always fascinated me, learning about classical conditioning (Ivan Pavlov), personality the id, ego, and superego (Sigmund Freud), were all interesting subjects in my high school introduction to psychology class. This subject was very interesting that it planted a desire that I had never forgotten, the desire of wanting to be a psychologist. The dysfunctional home environment in which I grew up also played a role in my decision. Although, I presently I hold a BA in Information Systems, I decided to return to school for my masters in psychology, since it was my first love. Choosing clinical psychology with a specialization in forensic was an easy decision, I love psychology and learning about the law of our country and the United Kingdom. One of my favorite past times is watching television shows old and new alike, such as Perry Mason, The Good Wife on CBS, Law and Order/Special Victim Unit on NBC, and Damages on Netflix. Television shows in the United States and the United Kingdom are not my only pass time, I love to cook, growing up in a Jamaican household undoubtedly allowed me the ability to learn to cook, some of their main dishes such as ackee and salt/cod fish, escovitch fish, curry chicken and much more. My mother also taught me to cook Italian dishes, and within the last three years I’ve learned to bake challah bread. The field of psychology is important to because I hope to comprehend violence
Psychology jobs continue to grow, as more people wish to learn about the inner workings of the human mind. Many individuals choose to work with young children to catch problems at an early stage and intervene. Others choose to work with adults, helping them overcome issues they are dealing with. Regardless of which group one chooses to work with, there are still many things people don't know about this field. Following are some that are surprising to those interested in psychology.
The career field of psychology is growing year after year due to the rise in trauma inducing cases in the past century or so. More than just this, there is also a greater understanding about mental illness as a whole, due to this finding, more people are now able to come forth because they know there is an abnormality in their mind, they know it is not “normal”. Considering the rise of people who come out asking for help, there is a significant problem in this field. There are many different aspects and theories of psychology that focus on a certain characteristic of the onset of these illnesses. The problem that comes with this is that if the focus is set on a certain aspect or outlook of the mental illness. Which means there is also a larger
My subject of attention is school psychology and career choice is school psychology. I have researched this topic and found lots of valuable information to discuss. I will cover all aspects of this career including a definition of what it involves on a day to day basis, why I have chosen this career as my subject of interest, common personality characteristics and values that go along well with this job. I will also talk about the minimum requirements and educational path that must be followed for this career choice along with advancement opportunities. Lastly, I will discuss the leading companies in this area, local perspectives, and present outlooks and salaries that can be expected
I want to be a psychologist. I would love to learn all about the way people act, think and feel and at the same time try to help them. I have a very easygoing personality and I love to have fun and laugh. I ask a lot of questions, and I think I am very easy to get along with. Some career goals I have is to finish college, I would like to find a job I want to keep that I could make a career out of, and just take it one day at a time because I have desire to make the right decisions and live a pleasant life.
Psychologists are very important people; they help millions of people with their everyday struggles and problems that they have to deal with. Not only do psychologists help people with problems that they cannot handle on their own, they also are scientists who study human minds and behaviors.
I believe that the answers to the greatest questions and problems in life could be gained through a better understanding of the human mind. Psychology is a study of human behaviors and trying to understand why we do the things we do. Because of this I would be interested in a career in psychology though there are many different career fields within psychology. I would be most interested in a career in health psychology though there’s an extensive learning process. It is important to understand the education or training requirements, skills, and talents needed salary and benefits offered and duties for a particular career when making this decision.
Psychology is the study of the mind, its biology, and behavior if the individual. The father of psychology, Wilhelm Wundt, used objective measurement and controlled analyzing to find and emphasize separation between psychology and philosophy (McLeod). Wundt opened the Institute for Experimental Psychology at the University of Leipzig in Germany in 1879, using his background in physiology to study reactions and sensations (McLeod). There is no doubt that he, along with the later help of Sigmund Freud, launched what is now modern psychology. Psychology and its research helped the world understand the inner workings of the mind and how it affects everyone around us.
