In “The Gestures of Grace” By: Alison Melotti-Cormack, she talks about what she believes makes a good teacher. Some of the qualities of a good teacher has is a passion for learning, connect with the students, evolves over time, and learns to accept the “bad” students. She also believes that teaching is all about learning and the gestures of grace. Melotti-Cormack’s main point/message is to just listen. She say’s this because from listening to her students she has been able to learn life lessons that she uses to help her students.

The teachers, they can point to and say, “That individual assisted me in becoming the person I am today.” For me, I have one special person that I can do that to. This individual is not only my favorite teacher, but very influential in my life. Katie Josef, my Ed Tech teacher, has shown me what true passion for the field of education looks like. I witness her upbeat personality, and get to experience the kindness she exuberates to her students on a daily basis. She drives the individuals in her class to succeed to their best ability. She inspires me to become an outstanding teacher in whatever field I choose to pursue. Mrs. J has shown me what a teacher that cares for her students truly looks like. In today’s society it is nearly impossible to survive without an education. It is important that we have the right kind of teachers to accomplish certain goals. A good teacher is one who listens to their students and tries to answer any questions they might have about anything. I think that a good teacher should also be able to listen to others opinions and not argue with them but try to understand their point of view on the subject.

Mrs. Collier was a good example of a great teacher. She would always treat the students in her classroom with respect and kindness. She showed this by helping any student that of course needed help with an assignment. She was also respectful of students and didn’t change course all of a sudden when the students are working on something that she told them to work on.

Furthermore, compassion and empathy-related courses should be taught as part of nursing and medical students’ curriculum because it results in a lower chance of healthcare errors. Generally, patients want their provider to connect and engage with them personally and emotionally, but as nurses and doctors acquire their license or certification to practice medicine, they are not taught to be compassionate rather they are generally objective and unemotional. However, this personal and empathetic connection between patients and their provider is extremely important because patients tend to feel that sigh of relief when providers connect with them on a personal level, which in hand results in fewer healthcare mistakes. While reading chapter four, the term “empathy” caught my eye and a sparkle appeared because I tend to experience the world from others point of view. The saying, “treat others how you would like to be treated” is implanted in my brain from when I was a child. Which has helped me overcome obstacles in my adult years. I will illustrate two incidents in my life where empathy plays a major role.

I had many wonderful teachers throughout my educational career but one individual in particular stands out among the rest. Her name was Mrs. Hoggle. Mrs. Hoggle had a passion for teaching and for her students. She continued her care far beyond the classroom, always caring for students as if they were her own. Her enthusiasm was always encouraging and helped to maintain a positive classroom environment every single day.

What defines a great teacher? A great teacher is someone that can come in everyday and put a smile of their face and try to make a difference in their students lives. A great teacher is a person who tries to push their students to their top academic performance and inspire their students to follow their dreams and to achieve them.
