Facebook is the largest and most popular social network in the world, with over 1.55 billion monthly users. In an interview with Techcrunch magazine, Mark Zuckerberg said, “Facebook was not originally created to be a company. It was built to accomplish a social mission - to make the world more open and connected”. Founded in February of 2004, the company was initially referred to as “thefacebook” by its founders, Mark Zuckerberg, and his four Harvard classmates, Eduardo Saverin, Andrew McCollum, Chris Hughes, and Dustin Moskovitz. The idea behind Thefacebook originated from Zuckerberg’s website facesmash, which allowed Harvard students to rate student’s photos side by side; the photos were obtained by hacking into Harvard’s database. Zuckerberg was forced to take the website down after students complained to the University. However, Thefacebook was created for a different purpose; the site was used as a tool for students to select courses (students were able to choose classes based on the students who already registered). Within one month after its launch Thefacebook expanded its network to include Columbia, Yale, and Stanford, by May of 2005 its network expanded to include more than 800 colleges and universities, and three months later, it grew to include high schools. On September 20, 2005, the company dropped “the” from its name, and officially became Facebook. Facebook continued to grow through acquisitions; in August 2009 the company acquired FriendFeed, a real time

The social network, Facebook, was created on February 4th, 2004 and it has become so successful, making a big stamp in the history books during these 11 years it’s been up and running. The social network has become a huge web phenomenon ever since it was created in a small dorm room, by an intoxicated, awkward sophomore at Harvard College. The events leading up to the creation of this social network were crucial to this sophomore. It all started when two Harvard twins, Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss came up with the idea of “The Harvard Connection”, a social network for Harvard students with a Harvard “.edu” email address only. They had a web developer who dropped them in the middle of the creation of “The Harvard Connection” and proceeded to find a new one quickly afterwards. Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss emailed Mark Zuckerberg, who soon agreed to meet with them, because he liked their idea. The Winklevoss’ chose Zuckerberg because he had recently created a very popular yet hell raising website that made him a celebrity on campus. Zuckerberg’s website was called “Face Mash” which
Facebook was founded in Cambridge, MA, on February 4, 2004, by Mark Zuckerberg, Dustin Moskovitz, Eduardo Saverin, Andrew McCollum, and Chris Hughes. Mark Zuckerberg says he created Facebook because, “…. my goal was to help people understand what was going on in their world a little better. I wanted to create an environment where people could share whatever information they wanted, but also have control over whom they shared that information with” (Zuckerberg). A day after Facebook was launched in Harvard University, it already had about twelve hundred to fifteen hundred users.
Through its years of operation, Facebook has been able to evolve and remain as one of the most popular social networking sites ever created. Facebook’s purpose is for users to connect, share, and communicate with each other across the internet. The case explores the beginning of Facebook, in 2003, when Harvard student, Mark Zuckerberg first created an on-campus website called Facemash. The site would allow other students to rank the attractiveness of fellow students and quickly became the topic of conversation at the university. Zuckerberg would soon be placed on academic probation for breach of security, after the university learned he had hacked into Harvard’s computer network in order to use pictures of students on the website. This, however, did not deter Zuckerberg as he then began to work on his next website: The Facebook. The Facebook was launched in 2004, soon dropping the “The” to become Facebook. Zuckerberg knew the sites potential and allowed other universities in the Boston area to use the site. Over the next years, Facebook grew more and more popular, being used in over 800 colleges, universities and high schools. By the end of 2005, Facebook had earned 9 million in revenue and millions of monthly active users (The Guardian 2007).

Facebook is the world’s largest such network. It is the rare high school and college student who does not routinely use Facebook or MySpace” (85). It is widely popular among college students because it can start the friendship with a simple request button in Facebook. Mark Zuckerberg founded Facebook in 2004 and it has been part of the popular culture. This social network has many cool features like “liking” someone status or photos, and private messaging loved by millions of people all over the world. Facebook is a social networking site (SNS) where people can communicate with one another, share photos and posts, and poke one another. Numerous studies have been conducted concerning Facebook, and an array of social and psychological theories have been used to study the SNS. When I was looking through my profile from over the years, I began to notice characteristics about me that I tried to present to my audience. Self-esteem issues were present in my profile, and the social comparison theory related well to the feelings and thoughts I encountered when viewing the profiles of other users. Display rules allow a false sense of self because we only show others what we think is “appropriate” (Aronson, Wilson, & Akert, 2013). Concerning social perception, I was able to relate my profile to internal and external attribution. Analyzing my profile was not easy, but I learned a great deal about myself in the process.
