After I have completed the full practice test I think it was a fair test. Considering the fact I know I did poorly because I did not know what rhetorical strategies were, that is something I should learn by the end of the class. I think by the final test it should be easier than the practice test because I will have a better understanding and be readily prepared. Although I think the length of the test is rather long. If I make sure I am doing the test to the best of my ability, I think to finish I will be rushing towards the end. I think the final essay was rather easy, or easier than the previous essays. This is because it was mostly opinionated and based off of information only in the text provided. I have never taken another AP exam. I
The essay charts themselves are very helpful and I like their concept. I don’t mind doing the allusions either, I think it is good to have an idea of the hidden messages authors include when using an allusion. Sometimes the workload feels overwhelming, but I glad you give us work days when we need them. Otherwise, I would have a really hard time finishing all my work to the best of my ability while facing personal conflicts. I find the stamps a helpful thing too because it is always helpful to have a one-on-one with the teacher, and most teachers do not spend the time to do that. As far as my concerns for my reading skills go, I still have difficulty answering AP level multiple-choice questions. I think my vocabulary is pretty weak for the test and I’m often stuck between two answers. Also, I’m glad you explained the AP exam and its format. I had initially planned on not taking it, but it does not sound as terrifying and I’m reassured by the reading and data sheets that it won’t be too
I feel like I, as a student have adjusted to the atmosphere and academic expectations of the class from what I was normally used to. Progress wise, I believe the instruction has been more than sufficient and helpful. I appreciate all the mechanical help and lessons on the key elements and components in our paragraphs and essays, for instance, how to successfully and technically construct a paragraph in an essay. I also appreciate how our class resembles and incorporates parts of the socratic method, in which we all closely read and consider a piece and discuss the meaning, our perspectives and analyze key
I decided to take AP Language and Composition due to the requirements of the University of Iowa. For my intended major, I need two rhetoric classes and one literature class. Last year I completed the literature class which improved my reading ability tremendously. After completing ENG 105, I have improved in multiple areas, but I am most proud of my improvement on the writing volume and stamina as I now have the ability to write college level essays. When examining all of the competencies, I have not mastered any one of them, but have improved in multiple categories throughout the semester.
I barely finished on the last minute, so I couldn’t go back and check my answers. But I was glad I finished. This could be embarrassing to confessed but my favorite time was the halftime break. I was relieved to gave my hand a break (and bathroom break) before the real challenge of writing 2 hours straight without stopping. Although I heard many liked the synthesis, I personally disliked the topic. I couldn’t understand it or what the question is asking for. For the rhetorical essay, I found many things the author used in her speech but I couldn’t put it into a well written essay; it was more like a list. My favorite was the argument essay. I have many example to write about. Historicals and present examples. By the time we all finished the exam, I was exhaust but good grief was I happy. I was done with all AP testing and I get pizza! Overall, I think I did okay, if I get 50% on both the multiple choice and essay part, I am confidently enough to pass with a 3. If I didn’t pass, I know I tried my hardest and this class is dual
Unfortunately, the students essay was not as clear as it could have been; if the student had followed the required APA guidelines it would have been more effective. There were multiple formatting errors that showed evidence in pasting paragraphs including the use of several different size fonts in the essay. I realize we are all new students to this class and here to learn. However I also fill like by giving constructive feedback to each other it will help us to grow in the long run
Alves. She mentioned how well I had done on the AP test in her usual Texan boisterous tone that could only be Mrs. Alves, and I folded into myself to admit that I never checked my AP scores because it gave me too much anxiety. Mrs. Alves is the teacher that brought me out of my shell and challenged my writing more than anyone before, so naturally I was pleased to learn that I had earned a 5! Mrs. Alves was a perfect vessel to deliver the news and I felt so happy to make her proud since she made such a positive impression and lasting impact on my high school experience. Going into AP 12 now, I grew a little weary as I saw AP 11 students drop like flies to go into honors this year, but was easily quelled at Mrs. Alves saying to me “I knew you were able to do this” and “your spirit has gotten so much lighter since the beginning of last year.” My goals for AP Lit are to write essays passionately and effectively, and to mature as a writer. My only concern for AP Lit is the difference between the approaches to writing and analyzing between last year and this year; I got very comfortable the way I was writing last year and it may be a little shell-shocking at the beginning. Change is good! Change is challenging! Challenging myself is good! Positive
"If my future were determined just by my performance on a standardized test, I wouldn't be here. I guaruntee you that." said Michelle Obama, according to brainyquotes.com. Standardized testing is everywhere. Children as young as eight years old take these tests in which all test takers are given the same test no matter what their specific needs are. At some schools, these tests determine whether you move on to the next grade and even if you graduate. However, is this really fair? While some students perform exceptionally, others do not. I think students should not be required to pass a test at the end of the year to move on to the next grade or to graduate because not all students test well. These tests can also add additional stress and anxiety to a student's life, and they are unfair to non English speakers and students with disabilities.
Standardized testing is an unfair way to judge how these students are making progress. Simply, some students do not test as well as other students do. There could be a very smart student that simply can not do well on test for whatever the reason may be, but the sad thing is we allow this to continue happening even when its totally unfair. Most of the time, students that come from a low-income family are treated the most unfairly. They attended poorly-funded schools with large class sizes, too many teachers without subject area certification, and inadequate books, laboratories and so on. States don’t put these schools into consideration that they don’t have the best education system. Instead, they continue to take it out on the students and deny them diplomas because of them not being about to afford a highly-funded school.
Standardized testing is a test that are taken by students all over the United States. Standardized tests have the same questions that are given with the same instructions, and with the same scoring method. Standardized testing has impacted teachers, students, and parents. For teachers, it has an impact on their salaries and for students it has an impact on their future. Standardized testing is unfair and needs to be terminated.
A century of practices are now being questioned by many American educators and students; a century of scores once thought reliable have become a highly criticized topic. In recent years, the College Board has been questioned and criticized for its unfair grading practices. This is mainly due to the overuse of technology, inexperience of graders, and wrongful evaluation of papers; therefore, I do not believe the writing portion of a standardized test can be fairly nor accurately scored.
Throughout the course of this semester in AP Lang, my eyes have been opened to many of the weaknesses I never knew I had in writing. Coming into this semester, I had heard about the difficulty of this class, but was not unduly worried about not receiving an A; I have always considered myself as a competent if not strong writer. However, after failing to attain desired grades on several important essays, I was devastated, and realized that although I had mastered the basics of grammar and writing, there was still much for me to work on. Also, I did not understand that much of my grade in AP Lang would be determined by speaking in front of others, which is not my strong suit. What I have come to find is that writing essays containing all of the new information we have learned throughout the semester, such as requirements for different types of essays and good writing strategies, takes a lot of work, time, and thinking. Unfortunately, my procrastination caused me to only get done what had to be done instead of putting in the extra work and truly understanding everything.
There is no evidence that support that teachers will be more motivated to improve student learning if they were evaluated for increase test scores but by basing teacher evaluations on inadequate standardized tests is a recipe for flawed evaluations. The problem with standardized testing is that they are narrow and have limited indicators of student learning. These standardized tests leave out a wide range of important knowledge and skills.
Based upon the sources I have cited, standardized testing can be biased or unfair to students, tests are created and often are not written by people with no to little teaching experiences, teachers are forced to teach test material, thus eliminating a student's creativity, and students are given over the requirements of testing.
Education has been an important part of society for centuries. Over the years it has slowly evolved into what it is today. The topic of education has been controversial since the beginning. It seems as though there is always someone that sees a need for change in how students are being taught and assessed. More specifically, many people think that standardized testing is not an effective way to assess students. While on the other hand, many also believe that standardized testing is the most efficient and effective way to assess people of all ages. The debate over standardized testing has been shown to effect students and the community in many different ways. Standardized assessments have had huge impacts with both teachers and students. Whether one thinks standardized testing is effective and efficient or misdirecting and unproductive it is a big part of the educational system. While the argument may present that standardized tests leads to simulated knowledge, others argue that standardized tests are very effective in assessing students.
My score on the effective study skills quiz was 21. I believe that it is probably a fair score because my study skills are not very good. Usually when I get an assignment I put it off until the last minute and if it is not that important or not worth that many points I do not do it and if it is important then I just throw it together at the last minute and do the best that I can. Surprisingly, I still do pretty well even though it sounds like I should fail just about everything. However, I know that it will not work for much longer and I will need to put together a better way of studying soon. That being said, I believe that the main issue is just responsibility and holding myself accountable for my work. I need to put the priority of
