I am honored to be your first debate! Welcome to DDO and good luck.
Argumentation:
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints places Faith as the first Principle of the gospel. How is faith defined and taught?
In Hebrews 11: 1 we read “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” (1) Notice the lack of evidence is inherent in the definition provided of faith. Alma 32: 21 from the Book of Mormon says “faith is not to have a perfect knowledge of things; therefore if ye have faith ye hope for things which are not seen, which are true.” (2) Finally from LDS.org we read that to have faith is to “show.. hope for something that we cannot yet see.”(3)
From this we see that the LDS concept of faith is to hope for

Evidence is “that which tends to prove or disprove something; ground for belief; proof.”(4) Thus we see that the notion of “walking by faith, and not by sight” (5) is to believe in something without grounds for belief. This is clearly nonsensical. Can I tell you to walk without the means to walk, or to see without the ability to see? Surely not, but here the concept of faith is just that. To believe when one should …show more content…
In James 2:17-18 we read that “Faith without works is dead.”(7) Thus it is not enough to profess belief in something without grounds to believe, you must act on it. Let say, for example, I have faith that the world is to end tomorrow. This means that despite lack of evidence of any kind I believe that the world is to end. I must now act in a way that demonstrates this belief. No matter what evidence is provided, rational reasoning, persuasion or whatever, doesn’t matter. “Because the foolishness of God is wiser than man” I am to have my faith override all. (8) This makes those acting on faith unable to be reasoned with…
“Faith alone is the saving and efficacious use of the Word of God, according to Rom. 10{:9}” (16).
Many people would agree that without faith, the world would be in chaos. The book Christian Foundation by Kathleen Fischer and Thomas Hart gives an interpretation on faith in our time. Many people would question the definition of faith. Faith is a gift, which is given by God to have trust in him and belief in him. This book is a great entry in anyone's life that has speculation on his or her own faith. The book has many ways into understanding ones own religion. It discusses the Bible, Jesus, Church, God's existence and Images of God. All of these chapters helped me get a better interpretation of what my religion entailed.
What is faith and does it really work? People rely on faith for things hoped for, but have not yet received. Faith is commonly associated with religion. Faith is embracing the unknown. Faith gives people hope and courage. People encourage others with faith. People get on bending knee and pray with faith. Faith can be someone’s first name. Faith gives help through hard times. Faith is not tangible. Faith is in people’s heart. Faith is hoping for a better world. Faith is touching someone’s heart. Faith is a promise for a better tomorrow. Faith is difficult to define, yet people rely on faith every day. According to Webster’s online dictionary faith is, “complete trust and confidence in someone or something.” Faith is trust, courage, and assurance
Faith in Christ has given me a unique life filled with optimism and purpose. From a young age, I have been raised in a home where I was taught about the love of Christ. Not only at home did I learn about Christ, but at school and at church. Thus, my life has been filled with experiences that have amplified my faith. For example, when my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer, I found that my relationship with Christ grew. Through all of the difficult circumstances that I have faced, faith in Christ has given me the encouragement that I need to persevere through any situation. Additionally, faith has influenced my decision making, which is why I strive to make all my decisions and live my life according to faith-based principles. This means
When discussing faith is it important to look at the word closely and understand its meaning. The basic definition of faith is “confidence or trust in a person; and belief that is not based on proof” (Random House… 693). Whether someone puts their faith in a person or a religious being, faith can be simplified as having
Saving faith involves the truth of certain facts, such as the deity of Jesus, and He died for our sins, and He Jesus physically rose from the dead. It is not faith itself that saves us, it is Jesus who saves us. 7. Paul teaches in 1 Cor. 15, faith that is not founded on facts is useless. 8.
Faith is a state of mind through which goals, desires, plans and purposes are interpreted into spiritual equivalent and transferred it to infinity intelligence. Everything can be achieved if you believe in yourself.
Faith is accepting what you are taught or told without trying to prove or disprove it, rather than discovering it through experience. Those who believe in God have faith. It has not been proven that God exists; similarly, it has not been proven that humans are kind, honest, and good by nature. Young Goodman Brown is a character in "Young Goodman Brown," who leaves his known world in Salem village and travels an unknown road in a dark forest in the middle of the night, a common motif in literature better known as the Hero's journey, and is faced with obstacles. He must decide if he will carry his journey out till the end, or turn back and not learn the truth about himself and other
Faith and reason can be viewed as opposites. Faith is an element of belief, something an individual does not necessarily require a reason for accepting without reason. For example, an individual’s reason for believing in God may not seem too rational when they are trying to explain them. They may not even stand up to criticism. On the other hand, reason is constructed as a formula. Faith is basically something we believe in, like something we learn in church. Reason is something we learn in school, such as a math formula.
What is faith? Is it a feeling, a thought, or a concept? As Martin Luther said in his book Freedom of a Christian, faith is “God’s work in us, that changes us and gives new birth from God.” When one thinks of faith, they maybe think about their personal relationship with God and the unconditional love He has. “He who through faith is righteous shall live.” The Word of God cannot be interpreted by any works but only by faith. Martin Luther had stated that, “It is clear that, as the soul needs only the Word of God for its life and righteousness, so it is justified by faith alone and not any works.” (Janz, A Reformation Reader, pg 109)
Faith as defined by the Merriam –Webster Dictionary is a noun. Faith could mean having confidence or trust in a person or thing, a belief that is not based on proof, a code of ethics or the belief in God or the doctrines or teachings of religion. Faith is something that many struggle with, especially when their trust has been compromised or broken.
What is faith? Scripture tells us in Hebrews 11:1 that “Faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.” (NIV) Faith means trusting that various situations will provide results best suited to help us in some way during our life. I’m sure others may have a different opinion; however, throughout my life, that has been the most accurate description.
Faith is a gift given to us as one of the many gifts of the spirit. Yet in the book of Ether, Moroni talks about the faith the the Brother of Jared had in Jesus Christ. We have all heard and read from examples of what great faith can do. Especially how when we act in faith we can over come trials temptations and tribulations. But have you ever thought that your faith is so great to be able to have the vail removed from your eyes to see the Savior Jesus Christ. That that's true and unwavering faith. My favorite part of about reading through Ether is the sections of the Brother of Jared and his family and friends. They go through intense and hard circumstances but at each time they are faced with something they ask the Brother of Jared to pray
Although there are any popular perceptions of faith, Tillich goes beyond all of this, saying that the popular perceptions, even by Christian religious traditions, are misconceptions. We often talk about having faith that there is life on another planet or something. To Tillich, these things do not constitute faith, but belief. The difference is that faith is ultimate concern. Faith must include both a cognitive and emotional component.
What is faith? Faith is something different to everyone. If you asked a hundred different people, it is possible that you would get many diverse answers. Religious faith and non-religious faith are two very distinct terms. Faith holds an extremely complex meaning when discussing it in the context of religion. Faith is a belief. That holds true to every religious and non-religious person. Every faith involves a decision. It is not about what we claim to believe, but what we actually do believe, that is true faith. Throughout this paper, I am going to discuss Christian faith, how it pertains to daily life and Christianity as a whole. I also intend to delve into George W. Forell's discussion of Christian faith and analyze and
