Family Families : A Parent Family

Being a one-person operation means you carry an extra heavy load as a parent, often feeling like you're only capable of getting half the job done. Most especially, though, if the other parent is out of the picture because they have serious problems that could negatively impact your household, you're doing the right thing. It's also very difficult for a single parent to successfully navigate the dating scene, due to lack of time, fear of meeting a psycho or introducing your kids to a new person, then having to say goodby because it didn't work out.

What do individuals think of when they hear the term First Family? Normally people think of the President, his wife, and their children, but it can be much more extensive. In the book First Family by David Baldacci, Pam Dutton, sister of the First Lady, is murdered. Pam’s daughter, Willa, is kidnapped during the attack on the Dutton family. One way to analyze this Family is with the Family system theory. This theory states that the family functions as a system Within this system are rules, power structures and different patterns of communication. In this theory the family is seen as a whole rather than as its individual parts. We also assume that the family functions off of circular causality and redundancy principle plays a role in the family rules. The concepts that I am going to use to describe this family will include; family cohesion, communication pattern, roles of a few of the members, the family rules and circular causality.

Did you know 30% of children in the United States live in a single-parent household as of 2012? ( )Every year this number is on the rise and it is causing children everywhere to suffer. When children are raised in an environment with only one parent they can have less opportunities and less supervision than a child with two parents. Past and present, children all over the world raised in a single parent household have been seen as “different”. Although it may seem hard to raise a kid all by yourself, in today’s society it has become a lot more common. In today’s world, kids grow up a lot more emotionally stable commonly, no matter having one or two parents to show them how to grow up and live a responsible, successful life. The situation that arises in most cases, presents a clear difference between children raised by two parents and those who are raised by a single parent. Do kids even need two parents in their life? However, by rising to these challenges, custodial single parents develop significant strengths. The positive benefits of being a single parent are that the child receives a lesson in independence. The child sees how strong the one parent is at providing them with everything they need without having to depend on someone else. The parents are showing their children that it is possible to live on their own, have an enjoyable life and take care of others while doing so. The children will know that they are a priority to the parent. When there is a second parent around the house, it can be easy to put responsibility off on them, but when the children see how hard the parent is working for them, they will understand how important they are to their parent. In general context, most of the children in the world are raised in a family with both mother and father. But in some cases, a child has only one parent; either a mother or a father. Being a parent itself is a huge responsibility more over being a single parent adds a whole new boulder in the path of giving a wonderful life to a kid. Mothers by nature are instinctive in taking care of their children however single mom homestay or working find it challenging.

Children in one-parent homes have realistic and cautious views of marriage and family life. Children and parents in singe parent homes develop self-reliance. Because the children have only one resident parent and that parent is probably employed, they will often be at home alone. As long as safety concerns have been addressed, children can learn to enjoy being on their own and can take care of their own needs (World News Connection, 2008).

Single parenthood is becoming an epidemic. According to Mullis & Mullis one in five families with children under the age of five is a one-parent family (Mullis & Mullis, 2013). With the rise of single parent households it is essential that families are equipped with the proper tools to navigate single parenthood. My goal for my parent education program involves equipping single parent families with the tools necessary to raise competent adults.

Single parenting can not only affect the children but the parents as well. Single parents struggle daily to support their kids financially without a second parent’s income. For example, my mother had to work double shifts to be able to support me and my older brother. Parents find it difficult to handle basic financial needs alone. Even with support from the government, families with single parents can still have a hard time making ends meet. My mother ask my dad to pay child support. She told me and my older brother that it was not going to be easy but she was going to take care of us on her own.

Some of the negative effects on a child being raised in a single parent home can be seen in the early years of their development. The child can start to feel infer to other children around them who have both parents present. These feelings of inferiority can stay with a child all the way to adulthood later in life. This negative impact can harm their ability to gain confidence leading to poor work in school and work later in life. The child will also feel neglected which can make it hard for them understand forming relationships with other people. This affects their understanding of how to act with other on a social basis during a critical time in their development. Also due to a parent needing to work longer hours to make up for the missing half of the house the child will not see them often. Missing parental presence can lead to very poor care of that child to the point that their health also goes into decline.

Lone-parent families are structures consisting of just one natural parent. This may be the result of a relationship breakdown, the passing of a partner or parent and even through choice to raise a child without support. Whatever the reason it is important to understand these parents do not all have the same needs.
