Family History Scholarship Essay

When I was first looking for a topic, it was harder than I thought. As I picked up my pen and paper everything evanesced. When the topic searching wasn’t going well I tried to define the word family. Ooh did I think long and hard, but realized that everybody’s definition was personal and different based on their feelings and memories. I thought long and hard into my family history and adorned the memory of our vacation to South Dakota, along with the activities attached to the trip. In my family narrative, I will be explaining a family trip to Mt. Rushmore, Kalahari, and the wild experience of standing on a glass box staring down in the Willis Tower, trying to unlock my personal definition of the word family. Now, let’s jump to the exhilarating trip to South Dakota!

Family history is very important to an individual. By knowing where you come from, you can have a better perspective of life. As I have grown up I have noticed that my entire background has influenced by who I am.

My family history has influenced who I am today due to the fact that I have descended from a long line of artistic people. On my mother’s side, there have been many who have worked with painting, music, drawing, dancing, and even film production. From day one in school I have loved the arts and have found that it is my passion. Both my parents have been highly supportive of wanted to continue my love of dance during and after college and also with pursuing it as a career. Not only that, but I have lived in Pittsboro, North Carolina all my life and stayed within the school systems in the county moving from elementary, to middle, to now high school. I have been very fortunate to have gone to schools that are highly oriented with the arts. Starting in elementary school with playing the recorder, I moved up to play the flute in sixth

The term "Family of Origin" refers to the family that you grew up in - your parents and siblings, your original family. It may also include grandparents, other relatives, or other individuals who lived with you during part of your childhood. From our family we learn how to communicate, deal with our emotions, and get our needs met. We also learn many of our values and beliefs from our families. We often develop our sense of self in the context of our family of origin. Our family of origin or our "family culture" shapes who we are, determines the thoughts that we have about ourselves and provides us with examples of how to behave as well as what to expect from other people in our lives, especially how to behave and what to expect in our relationships- including our intimate relationships. I chose number three (Family story) for my family history project because I wanted to talk about the great events that happened within our family history.

When I enrolled in Columbia southern college to further my education, the enrollment counselor told me I needed 6 credits of history. The first thought that popped into my mind was; “I do not need to learn anything else about history at this point in my life/career, I have learned all I needed to know about history in grade school and high school”. After multiple failed attempts at trying to convince my counselor why I should not have to take history, I realizing that there was no way around taking this course. As I began to read over the syllabus and the unit assignments, I began to have an open mind and second thoughts about the course. I enjoyed this project thoroughly. It was a great way to get in touch with our family history, something I did mainly through interviews. Several family members told me things I never knew, such as my lineage tracing back to multiple parts of Europe, and even the meaning of my last name. Some of my greatest sources of this information were my father and grandmother. Since my grandfather is no longer alive, my dad told me what he had told him about his life and family. My grandmother did the same with her life and parents, and I was able to greatly increase my research and improve my presentation.

Why is it important to know your family history? How does it impact your life? These are the questions that helped me realize how important your family history is, so today I will be telling you about my family history. My story tells you about the struggle for people from the West Indies to come to America.

Family history is very important to an individual. By knowing where you come from, you can have a better perspective of your life. Having a clear understanding of your family background allows you to better appreciate the things that you would normally take for granted. The house, the car, and the average clothing may look better when one sees the sacrifices their family has made. They will see that their family has worked very hard just so their family can experience the better things in life. A persons roots and origin is one of the most important things to explore. It alone can bring you closer to self-discovery.

The family history assignment was to enable us to gather information from a participant. Used the data collected to build a genogram going back three generation. To tell this families story by incorporating medical, spiritual, cultural, and ancestral history. Then to review the information and show areas that could be modified to decrease the risk of health problems.

Everything was about to change, we wouldn’t order take-out on Sundays, it was a big deal, I was losing my best friend, the only father figure I have ever had so far. I watched him taking all of his stuff out of the apartment, I was getting more and more mad. Wasn’t our beautiful relationship enough to make him stay? I even blame myself I thought I had done something wrong, maybe wearing his clothes and leaving them all messy, I apologize and swear not to do it again, but it didn’t matter the decision was already made.

No one can’t meet a family like mine’s. My family is well diversified. Every family member plays an important role in all my family’s lives. In my family, there are four people: my father, my mother, my little brother and me. My father is one who brings money home and is also responsible for organizing and planning family trips. My mother is the one who is in charge for making meals and makes sure everyone eats at the appropriate times. My little brother is the pet of the family. He actually doesn’t have any responsibilities, for he’s the pet. I am the rock of support in my family. I always go beyond my parents’ expectations.
