In family therapy sessions, therapists encounter unique dilemmas when only one partner enters into therapy because only one viewpoint of the problem is provided (American Psychological Association, 2002). This is what presents itself for us today. A husband has asked for help in protecting himself and his children from his wife’s outbursts. His family consists of his wife of 11 years, Angelina; his son, John, age nine; and his delicate daughter, Jackie, age seven. Since this client is reserved and uncomfortable within the therapy session as demonstrated by his folded arms and leaning back in his chair away from the therapist, the therapist will begin by using client-centered, therapy-based questions (Rogers, 1946). If the therapist heard these comments about the client’s upbringing, she did not acknowledge them. The man’s statement goes with his body language; he is not used to allowing others in to his personal world, and his crossed arms provide protection from outside parties. There is further indication of a lack of integration within the family as the man refers to his wife working, but he provides no information concerning his role in the family. This additional information will be important for the therapist to understand the dynamics of the client’s family and assist him with new methods of relating to his family (Mahrer, 2007).
As the interview progresses, the client indicates to the therapist that he feels that he and his wife remaining married would be best for the children if he can resolve the current situation with his wife (Nichols, 2008). In the first six minutes of this therapy session, this client has revealed a lot to the therapist about his priorities, values, and attitude. First, the client is more introverted than extroverted as he sits with arms folded in a new situation.
