“I am no bird, and no net ensnares me. I am a free human being with an independent will.” This is a quote from Charlotte Bronte’s novel, Jane Eyre. The character Jane reminds me of a famous immigrant in American history who led women to break out of traditional roles. Her name was Liz Claiborne, an innovative designer who was the first to realize that every working woman wasn’t ending up in the boardroom or aspiring to [corporate life] (Bernstein 1). It is unquestionably hard for immigrants to prove themselves in a foreign country, but Liz Claiborne did it. Liz Claiborne was a Belgian who immigrated to America and changed fashion and business industries in U.S. due to her innovations.

Perfect: adj. \ˈpər-fikt\ 1. Entirely without any flaws, defects, or shortcomings, is the first definition you find on dictionary.com for the word (perfect). Is this actually possible to attain? Has anyone actually ever been perfect? Or is it all in the eye of the beholder? These questions are asked by almost every girl, as we dream to one day reach the unattainable. This is especially true at the tender age of fifteen, where nothing seems to be going right with our bodies and everything is changing in us. This poem stresses the fact that as everyone realizes how unrealistic this dream is, the knowledge makes no difference to the wish. Marisa de los Santos comments on this in her poem “Perfect Dress”. The use of verbose imagery,

of a girl who was misunderstood. Throughout her childhood and young adulthood, Daphne struggled with identifying with her feelings. Daphne was constantly searching for an answer to why she felt different. Daphne wanted to “fit in” but she knew she was unconventional. The different labels she was given through out her psychiatric stay stuck with her and left a scar of how she was once perceived.

“Clothes” is written by Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni. It is a short story about an Indian-American woman, Sumita, who is about to embark on a new chapter of her life, marriage. Sumita, throughout the story, is nervous and confused about what is to come next in her life. The story begins in the women’s lake with Sumita and her friends, Deepali and Radha. The groups of friends are preparing Sumita for her big day, meeting her soon to be husband for the first time.

Wayne Dyer once said “doing what you love is the cornerstone of having abundance in your life”. Ever since I was a little girl, fashion has always been a very important part of my life. However, while most young girls were busy designing Barbie’s next outfit, I was enthusiastically trying to figure out the best way to market and sell Barbie to my friends. This habit did not end during my childhood years; rather it followed me through high school. I firmly believe that being passionate about your career can add much happiness and depth to your life. By attending FIT I can bring and take away positive ideas and qualities.

This short story is about a young Indian woman named Sumita, her impending arranged marriage and subsequent trip to America, which is symbolized by the color and type of her clothes. The author utilizes color symbolism to express the emotional changes that Sumita is going through and how she uses colors to keep her grounded with her Indian beliefs during her transition from girl to bride-to-be to an Indian-American to widow. There are many examples of colors that represent established Indian beliefs and religion are mentioned throughout the story.

In Purple Bathing Suit poem, Louise Gluck develops a difference between needing someone even if they are not perfect in their eyes and being unsatisfying staying in a relationship can be. There were a few things in Gluck’s poem that made it fascinating, such as the individuality related to gender, the level of love/hate relationships, and the truth of realizing that real reason you stay.

Vera Wang has a passion for fashion, and her passion is a driving force behind her success. Wang’s interest in fashion began at an early age as she began designing figure skating costumes for her competitions.1 She then worked in the fashion industry as a senior editor at Vogue and for Ralph Lauren as a design director. She started her own business at the age of 40, designing clothes for one client at a time as she grew her business and gaining popularity until the point where she could launch her own line. In her journey Wang displayed “value-based” leadership behaviors. Value-based behaviors include establishing a vision and displaying a passion for it.2 Wang’s work ethic belays her passion as she is a self proclaimed workaholic who meets with her clients during the day, and often designs at night.

In the article, entitled, “My Uniform,” Cheryl Strayed offers a look at what it is like to do something only to impress others. The main character in the article, goes through so much trouble only to impress a boy. She questioned herself the whole time she was buying the piece of clothing that did not make her feel like herself. As she put not the piece of clothing, more questions popped up in her head. Although she still went through with the piece of clothing and wore it anyways, the next day she would vowed to never wear anything like that again. Instead of the sexy piece of clothing she thought would impress the boys, she found a pears of sweats that made herself feel good. When talking about the baggy sweats she fell in love with, Strayed

Fashion is everything to society and the media. The fashion industry has transformed into a necessity in the life of people. Everyone wants to look good, feel fabulous and feel as if we belong with everyone else. The envy and desire to wear certain things and look a certain way all come, from wearing the latest fashion handbags, accessories, dresses, shoes, and the list goes on. But, when is considering fashion into an individual’s life going too far to the extreme? The fashion industry is rapidly growing and constantly generating new fashion trends almost weekly. Fashion for some may seem ridiculous and unnecessary; but fashion is not just a meaningless usage of article of clothing or farcical materials sew together for coverage. There is more to fashion than meets the eyes, fashion is precious and significant. It is a reflection of self-image, it speak the ream about who we are and how we review ourselves. Not only is fashion the reflection of self-image but also the reflection of our history as Coco Channel have said, “Fashion is not something that exist in dresses only. The short store “Clothes” by Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni is about a young Indian woman, Sumita, and her cultural transition to America that is symbolized by her clothes and the color of her clothes. The traditional Indian attire for a woman is a sari and each one has its own purpose. Her clothes also indicate her progression from daughter, to wife, to woman.

Coco Chanel, born Gabrielle Bonhuer Chanel, on August 19, 1883 in Saumur, France was an amazing woman who redefined fashion as we know it today. She was a clothing designer who revolutionized the fashion industry with her suits, little black dresses, and avant garde flare. Because of this quickly in her young life she became well know, and rose to be the fashion icon that she is today. From the timeless designs that are still popular to this day, and the sophisticated outfits that can be paired with great accessories Chanel has done it all. When it comes down to it though it was Coco Chanel’s philosophy that “luxury must be comfortable, otherwise it’s not luxury” that lead to her success. (“Coco Chanel”)

For my own artist paper, I chose to study the French fashion house, Christian Dior SE. During the past seven decades, Christian Dior has transformed its brand from just another high end fashion house into a name synonymous with wealth, sophistication, power, dignity, and prestige. Christian Dior stands in a league of its own in our culture. It’s a mega brand with major influence over fashion and business. Instead of spending hours hunting down financial records and hiring practices for a smaller house, Christian Dior appealed to me because of their long history, easily accessible records, and publicly traded status meaning they would have long reports outlining all the companies numbers for a given year. Christian Dior is also the majority owner of the luxury holdings company LVMH, with a 40.9% controlling share and 100% ownership of Christian Dior Couture (CITATION).
