Melissa, I concur with your opinion for fiction had no influence in shaping my sense of identity even though I love to read fiction ever since I was a child. Nowadays, it is more difficult to sit down and read a good book for my daily schedule is extremely hectic. As an avid reader, fiction has been more of an escape from reality and there has been times where I can relate to the situation the protagonist is confronting but does not change or shaped my identity.
While my fiction and nonfiction resources have similar themes, they also have uniquely different themes. One of the main themes in the fiction resource is justice. Even though Rusty and Andrew have to undergo many hardships in order to get enough evidence to expose Mean Man Myers for what he did and is still doing, they still kept going. They knew that it was the right thing to do and that in the end, it would be worth it because their hard work would pay off by exposing Mean Man Myers for his crimes. On the other hand, one of the main themes of the nonfiction resource is that it is informative. It explains how some people abuse animals and therefore the effects it has on those people, and the animal that is being abused. But also as well actually
Vampire stories have universal themes that provide the backbone for every dark tale. The unholy essence that any vampire story provides sets the stage for the message that the Church is the way of life and will save you from creatures of evil. From in class readings, we can see all the major religious themes of the classic vampire story. The common religious theme is the abscess of light is the absence of holiness and is the path to eternal damnation. Darkness is the prime universal fear of humanity mostly because we, as a species, are not nocturnal creatures; therefore, we have developed a fear of the predator filled darkness of night. Using figurative descriptions of darkness as the enemy, the Church preaches the way of the light. The
Even though some people discount fiction as a sources of learning and think it is just for entertainment sake there is still much to learn from it. Fiction being written by the author will have his or her knowledge mixed into it. Learning from someone else’s prospective will help you solidify what you believe, either by backing it up or challenging it and making your values stronger in the process. In “Telling the Truth in Lies” Virginia Stem Owens says, “Fiction brings us a certain kind of news about the world we can get in no other way, because all other ways are abstract and detached, while fiction’s way is particular.” Fiction can teach the reader to believe and hope for a happy outcome or to protect themselves so they are not hurt by what
After reading the Harry Potter series, U spent weeks anticipating a letter from a magical school that would reveal that I was in fact a wizard and was invited to attend their classes to learn magic. People tend to enjoy reading fiction so they can live vicariously through the characters in the story. Fiction, despite being “made-up”, often have close similarities to the real world. By taking a closer look at “The Veldt” by Ray Bradbury and “The Tell-Tale Heart” by Edgar Allen Poe, one can infer that fiction reveal a significant amount of truths about human nature.
Identity affects me as a reader of literature because I am female. Being female affects me as a reader because of the emotions I feel when reading things. One could feel the way I do when reading, but not all females feel the way I do about certain events in books, someone may not feel anything when they read literature.
In today’s America it is becoming harder and harder to know what is truth and what is fiction. The best way to have a complete understanding is to look at the facts and the statistics about whatever you want to know more about. For example when people look at Islam there are numerous misconceptions that people hold with or without knowing it.
On his way home from Baseball, Julian was thinking to himself about what he could do outdoors. Then he gets a perfect idea, "Lets go on a hiking trip and I'll invite some guys too!" Julian then calls some guys from his baseball team, Justin who is very layback and funny. He calls Ricky who is the captain of the baseball team and Jesus (who is called chuy)and he is more of the gentlemen type but if you get him mad, he could probably take out a trailer full of bad guys. Julian decides he'll call them tomorrow, the next day Julian calls Ricky first.
There are three main things that influence a character. They are the environment the character is in, the people the character interacts with, and the experiences that the character goes through. The identity of a person or a character is never complete. The identity will just continue to grow as you grow as a person. The experiences, people, and environment will continue to change your identity as you go through life. Even if a character in a book is deceased their identity can still be growing because the other characters may find things that change their perspective on a person. Someone will always grow as a person which will change their identity. Authors can reveal identity in many different ways. An author can tell you all about that person in the beginning of the book. A person can go from a happy person to a depressed person because of experience, or the environment they're exposed to. Another way that an author can reveal a character's identity is through objects that they have or things that they wrote on. An author can also reveal a character in a book =through the actions that they make or even the people that they are friends with or interact with on a daily basis. My own identity is quite similar and different to Johnny Cade in the book The Outsiders.
“It may not be a big deal to you because you’re not the one who has to give consent to end the life of the person who gave your life.”
Amber and I have been dating for four years and we love each other very much, and I think it’s finally time that I ask her to marry me. The only reason why I didn’t earlier was because I wanted to make sure it was right. So today my mom is going to take me to the jewelers to pick out a ring. Since I am blind I can’t see the ring so I just told my mom what I wanted and she picked it out for me. I wanted it to be a big ring with big diamonds and a little red stone in the middle. I just know that it is going to be beautiful.
Educators have long been arguing that literary education, in school and beyond, is crucial for emotional development. However, until recently, very little evidence existed to scientifically support this idea. In his article, “This is How Literary Fiction Teaches Us to Be Human”, author Tom Blunt makes a concise but persuasive argument about why literature is essential for human emotional development. In order to effectively prove his point, Blunt cites both scientific and anecdotal evidence and emphasizes the essential nature of empathy, derived from reading literature, to future generations.
The study of fiction can teach society lessons and provide warnings against past mistakes from happening again. Acts of genocide and similar atrocities are devastating and unnecessary acts of hatred in the world. Between the years of 1939 and 1945 was one of the world’s largest acts of hatred against a group of people - the Holocaust. In just the span of six years in Germany, approximately eleven million people were killed, six million of them were Jewish. Thirty years after the end of the Holocaust, from 1975 to 1979, was a similar act of mass murder in Cambodia - the Cambodian Genocide by the rebel communist group, the Khmer Rouge. It is estimated that between these four years, approximately four million Cambodians were killed, leaving
"Why do you wear that thing on your head?", she pointed her long red-polished fingernail at the flowered scarf on my head. I wasn’t ready for that question. I would think that by now I would have a prepared answer ready for each time I am asked, but the reality is that every time I am asked I am somewhat taken aback. Why? Simply, because I am so used to it and feel so normal in it that I forget that I appear strange to everyone around me.
For the last few decades it is argued to what extent popular fiction reflects such things as social changes in our society and topical debates. In this paper I will discuss to what extent popular fiction reflects debates about gender and sexuality. Moreover, I will look at the difference between postfeminism and third-wave feminism, afterwards I will more closely look at Candace Bushnell's book Sex and the City (1996) and relate the book's ideas about woman and woman's sexuality to postfeminism and third-wave feminism ideas. I will also look at cyber-feminism in relation to another chick lit - Helen Fielding's book Bridget Jones's Diary (1996).
There are many ways to supplement a story in order to add lucidity. It is done through literary devices and Tim O'Brien's "The Things They Carried" is no different. "The Things They Carried" is a narrative about a soldier at war in Vietnam. However, this story provides multiple layers of meaning through O'Brien's tone and style that help the reader further understand it. Both of these literary devices are embedded in the story and gradually help define it.
