Zootopia (Howard 2016) is an animated film of Zootopia’s first ever bunny cop, who overcomes various obstacles, while working with an edgy, prideful, con-artist fox, to uncover a conspiracy. I will argue that formal elements, including low-key lighting, mise-en-scene, editing, and framing portrays real world issues of how discrimination and stereotypes affect people, or in this case, predators. Throughout the film, predators are marginalized and affected by various stereotypes, the press conference scene proves this argument. During this scene, framing portrays the emotions of Nick Wilde, as he listens to a press conference, in support of his friend Judy Hopps. As Hopps digs deeper into the facts of the case, she derails giving some input on why predators are having vicious outbreaks. Without her knowledge, her comments come off as discriminatory to Wilde, and his reaction clearly shows his discomfort. The scene begins with a med shot of Wilde, beginning with a change of pace in his breathing, he begins to breathe slower, heavier, sticking out his chest, as his posture fluctuations, showing he is surprised with her comments. Wilde’s ears perk back and his eyes widen as his head tilts, by the look on his face, the expression of disturbance is evident. As Wilde attempts to get a better look at Hopps’ presentation, a close-up of Wilde occurs. This enhances his emotions, in effect of the remarks being made.
