“Music is a more potent instrument than any other for education”, spoken from the famous philosopher and mathematician, Plato. School around the country have been excluding the music and arts programs in their curriculum. Americans need to start to stand up for their children’s freedom to be able to express themselves through fine arts. When students have the opportunity to associate with music and art schooling, countless courses of actions take place that will help with the development of the brain. However why the fine art programs must be targeted is perplexing, when there could be extremely poor consequences to losing the music and art in student’s schedules. Including the music and arts programs at our schools, it helps in further ways than just one, for example it helps the brain, and language development. Music education helps enhance those natural abilities, which are used to interpret sounds and words. Recent studies have shown clearly that musical training physically develops the left part of the brain, which is known to be involved with processing language. Although why fine arts are the first to be cut, is considering that they are not the most pronounced program to bring in money. Schools are also cutting fine arts, by reasoning of that the programs require a large percentage of the budget, but studies have also shown that football is the best funded program in many high schools, so why not have the funding be cut equally to all programs to keep them. Even though the programs would probably have to be somewhat smaller, however, I feel like that would be more reasonable than just cutting the fine art completely. Therefore, why the fine arts must be cut is bewildering, when there are various routes that the schools can take, plus there could be a possibility of problems with losing the fine arts
All around the United States, art programs are being cut out of the budget in public schools. The arts include dance, band, chorus, theatre, film, drawing, painting, photography and literary arts. Some school board members feel these art programs are not necessary and do not benefit the students in any way. Elementary, middle, and high school students are forced to quit their passion and feel that their talents are not supported by their schools. Although many are not aware, there is a strong connection between arts education and academic achievement. Many would argue that sports have a greater importance compared to the arts. Not only this, but many would say that art is not important enough to have a place in public schooling. However, those who have this mindset do not understand the countless amount of benefits that arts education has in an everyday student's life. Art education refers to education in music, dance, the visual arts, and theater. The engagement of students in the arts are essential to every student's educational career. However art programs always seem to come short in funding and this can later negatively impacts a student’s academic career. Budget cuts would be defined as the act of reducing budgeted expenditures. Budget cuts can come about due to a decreasing amount of money used to split among various school programs. The board members of school districts are constantly trying to get more resources. However, in the end, there is not enough money to cover for so many teachers, supplies, and programs. As budget cuts arise, the arts are almost always immediately targeted. The budget cuts would cut down funds for art supplies, musical instruments, and art teachers. In addition to funds that order to hire art organizations for programs which provide arts education services for students. Many public schools are struggling with budget cuts, resulting in the continued elimination of art programs across school districts throughout the nation. Due to budget constraints, fewer schools offer art classes today. Due to the fact that arts education is infrequently seen as a number one priority in public schools, there is little funding put into place and because of the diminishing amount of art programs, students are being deprived of the benefits that arts education can provide for them academically and non-academically.
How would you feel if one of your favorite subjects was cut from school? You would feel disappointed or sad right? That is how I would feel if fine arts programs were cut from my school. For me, the arts are an outlet of my soul where I can explore my passion, and express my creativity. There are some school officials that say cutting arts funding would save money that could go towards better funding, but some neuroscientists say cutting arts funding might be a bad idea, since the arts have some very important benefits such as, improved motor skills and better language development. Also with cut funding, we would have more unemployed workers since all the teachers who taught those programs would be laid off and would lose their jobs. There are many disadvantages and advantages of cutting the arts, but I believe fine arts programs should not be cut from schools.
In today’s school systems, art and music classes are not mandatory to be taught. This makes them very vulnerable to budget cuts in struggling schools. It is estimated that more than eighty percent of schools nationwide have experienced cuts to their budgets since 2008 (Metla). Every child in America deserves a complete education, and a complete education includes the arts. Due to budget cuts, many students do not receive instruction in art and music and therefore do not receive a full education. Music and art classes in schools are just as important as core classes and should not be subject to budget cuts.
Elementary schools and high schools across the U.S. have lately suffered from financial strain. Because of this, budget cuts have to be made and music programs often suffer before sports and academics. Additionally, students who study art are four times more likely to be recognized for academic achievement and three times more likely to be awarded for school attendance than those who do not (11 Facts about Arts in Education 2). Despite the benefits of having a music and art program, they are often the first things to go when a school starts budget cuts. Due to, schools today focusing on four main core values: Math, Science, English, and History. Consequently, by focusing on these four main core values schools are crushing the creativity of students. Across the United States many elementary school music classrooms are filled with simple and popular tunes such as Hot Cross Buns and The Ode to Joy, played on the recorder, while high school students may be playing collegiate or professional pieces of music such as Armenian Dances and Carmen Suites. I have been very fortunate to have gone on the journey of progressing through different music education programs within Fairfax County Public Schools. If I was never exposed to music while in elementary school I might not have ever found one of my greatest passions or been able to create such fond and unforgettable memories. While music education programs across the country appear large and strong, many schools are beginning to experience budget reductions. As a result, music is often the very first component of a school 's curriculum or programs to be cut or significantly reduced, but I believe this is not the right course of action. It is important to preserve and promote music education in public schools because of the proven cognitive, character,and academic benefits for students.
Much too often in America today, modern music and art programs in schools are perceived to many as extracurricular activities rather than important subjects that are vital to a students learning and skill development. The truth of the matter is that encouraging music and art education in public schools has a much larger impact on student’s grades, academic performance, and the economy than the majority people realize. I was forced, to partake in many obsolete classes throughout the time I was in elementary school and in middle school against my will. While most of my peers seemed to enjoy some of these programs, I absolutely could not stand them, I often earned “extravagant” or “fantastic” marks on them but that didn’t mean that I loved them; this wasn’t the only subject area where I earned high marks. I started going to middle school in 6th grade. In my seventh grade year, which was divided up into trimesters, I was required to take a rotating elective of one trimester of a computer class, one trimester of some sort of study-hall like class I can’t recall the details, and one trimester of an art class. Studies have shown that students who are involved in music and art programs have an overall higher IQ and show signs of many other academic benefits. Schools that offer fine arts classes have lower dropout rates and raised attendance. The fine arts positively impact students of lower socioeconomic status more those of a higher status. The fine arts have no barriers for race, religion, and culture when it comes to being involved in the arts. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to be involved (Katy Independent School District). Without the arts these students have no outlet for creative capabilities and no way to express their talents. Students who need this way of expressing themselves are overlooked and they are the ones who need it the most (Dickson). When viewing the participation of arts in the eyes of a ten-year old, “It cools kids down after all the other hard stuff they have to think about” (Arts and Smarts: Test Scores and Cognitive Development).
Napoleon Bonaparte once said "A picture is worth a thousand words." It means that the image can have a greater impact than any words said. Art and music can have that effect. Most people would agree with him, but others would say that art and music is waste of time. Due to budget cuts and art and music classes being a distraction, schools have decided to eliminate art and music classes. On the other hand, students enjoy these classes just as much as young adults do in college. Our school needs more music and art departments because the classes fascinate the students and keep them in school, there are opportunities for scholarships, and students who take an interest in music education frequently do better than their peers in core classes.
