Surprisingly, Football is not the topic of "Football" by Louis Jenkins; rather, 'a man's brown leather oxford' (Line 3/4) is the star of the show. The tone of the poem at first is serious, the speaker resolute to do his job as quarterback. Football terminology is evident and differentiates the solemness of the first two lines from the altered tone in the next section of the poem. The shift takes place with a hasty 'what the hell is this?' (Line 3), invoking a completely different view from the speaker. Although, there is still a sliver of the previous tone in the au courant one, the author meant for the new tone to be amusing in the mix-up with equipment and the speakers comparison to pancakes. The speaker juxtaposes 'clear corn syrup' (Line

He turned his eyes away from the television, showing a different game. A millionaire’s plaything, a game Charlie didn't understand anymore, a team of foreign imports, who cared fuck all about the jersey, only about the money.
