Globalization is the process by which regional economies, societies, and cultures have become integrated through a global network by transportation, communication, and trade. Through a global lens the process of globalization seems to be vital to the development of the modern world. As a result of globalization there has been a dramatic transition in every aspect of life around the world, more specifically in areas such as trade, immigration, and human development. International trade bolsters sales, lowers the cost of production and consumption, and extends the market reach of any corporation. This is beneficial to America in that consumers are able to buy more goods and services at lower costs and therefore the gross domestic product

Of the three forms of transportation, rail has the highest fixed costs, motor carriers the greatest variable costs, and air transport, the greatest variable costs of service and logistics optimization. Starting with rail, the cost structure has the highest fixed cost components, driven by infrastructure and terminal costs. Rail is therefore the most difficult to negotiate a lower transportation cost for, as the fixed costs form an inflexible pricing structure for retail service providers. The quality of rail service varies significantly across nations and regions as well, leading to greater variability in costs when a shipment moves across national and regional boundaries. Given the highly fixed cost structure of rail systems, there is significant room for improvement from an efficiency standpoint. The use of containerization is continually adding to greater efficiencies to this mode of transport (Jennings, Holcomb, 1996).

In addition to shortening transit times, using the Panama Canal will also reduce transportation costs. In other words, the Panama Canal offers reduction in transportation costs to other countries. “The Panama Canal is one of the major shipping lanes in the world because it saves so much time and distance over the route previously required. By using the Panama Canal, ships save 7,872 miles by bypassing the trip around South America.

Globalization is the process by which different societies and cultures integrate through a worldwide network of political ideas through transportation, communication, and trade. Generally, globalization has affected many nations in various ways; economically, politically, and socially. It is a term that refers to the fast integration and interdependence of various nations, which shapes the world affairs on a global level. Simply put; globalization is the world coming together. In this essay I will discuss multiple perspectives on globalization through the analysis of these three sources.

The majority of movement of materials and goods across continents is through container ships, however, in some cases, planes are used to transport goods. Trucks and trains move materials and goods and within a country or a continent. In some cases, ships sail in rivers, as is the case in parts of Canada. The shares of freight transport as the percentage of the total tone-km by road, inland waterways, and railways in the EU are 75.9%, 6.7%, and 18.4% respectively (EUROSTAT, 2016). In the USA, trucks are the most used means of transportation for moving freight up to 750 miles. Trains move items in bulk beyond the 750-mile limit up to 2000 miles (United States Department of Transportation, 2015).

Globalization is difficult to simply define due to the variety of changing definitions that have been established over previous decades. Hamilton and Webster (2012) suggest that globalization is the connection between nations, defining globalization as a process in which barriers are reduced in order to encourage exchanges between countries. This view proposes that globalization refers very much so to the trade barriers and the improved communications between countries in order to ensure the world is unified. Globalization increases economic activity across the world and opens up markets for foreign investment.

Transportation is an important and pervasive element in our society that affects every person either directly or indirectly. Goods we consume, our economic livelihoods, our mobility, and our entertainment are impacted by transportation. U.S. economy, as well as the economies of most industrialized countries, is attributable in part to the benefits derived from mass production and the associated division or specialization of labor that enables mass production to occur.

The economic changes of globalization include the strengthening of economic inter-dependence, internationalization of production, and enhanced mobility of transnational corporations. On the other hand, trade liberalization, privatization, and deregulation are the ideological changes emanating from this concept.
