Disaffiliation is a pledge to give up your letters and let go of any biases to help a PNM through the process of Formal Recruitment to find a sisterhood she belongs too. Gamma Chi's are a critical part of the recruitment process, because you must be selfless. You cannot sway one of your PNM's to a chapter just because you love her and you are in the chapter. You also should not bash any of our wonderful chapters. Being elimination any biases toward our chapters, we are able to guide our PNM's into making the best choice for each of them individually. I was a PNM that want to be in the same chapter as my gamma chi just because I thought she was so amazing and great. I think giving up our letter and making sure not to reveal our sorority identity
I learned so much about the things I was capable and not capable to do and about the foundation of Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority Inc. The lovely ladies of Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority Inc. always made me feel very comfortable to the point that I was able to be myself around them. However, when I tried that with the other sorority members it did not felt the same way. The other sorority made me feel left out and uncomfortable when being around them and that’s something that Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority Inc. did not. Being able to talk one on one, ask for help and talk to the ladies like a regular friend was one of the reason why I chose Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority
The role of a pi chi begins with a good foundation, which is developing the knowledge and appreciation of all the Panhellenic sororities on UTC’s campus. Being past Membership Education for my sorority, I understand how important it is to learn the specific details of the organization in order to fully appreciate it. Additonally, it is important for pi chis to develop a relationship with PNMs so they feel comfortable enough to have whole hearted conversations about their thoughts and feelings through the recruitment process without the fear of offending or feeling judgement from their Pi Chi. They also need to be approachable so all PNMs, not just in their group, can feel comfortable enough to approach them with questions, concerns, or just someone to talk to. A role outside of the PNM’s eyes is being able to work with people of different personalities, backgrounds, and Greek affiliations to be able to make the preparation process and recruitment week go smoothly.
In order to get information for my paper, I interviewed someone with a position of authority within Tri Delta. Her name is Danielle, and she is the new member educator. The first thing I learned about Tri Delta is that it is more than just letters on a shirt, songs and chants, a gold pin, socials, rituals, an obligation, or a way of life. “Being in a sorority is about learning about people and being able to give without expecting a return. Tri Delta has allowed me to find lifelong friends and find confidence in myself as well as in my sisters,” Danielle explained. After hearing her explanation, I couldn’t agree more. Danielle also told me that the close relationships are her favorite part. “My favorite part about being in Tri Delta is the sisterhood.
Day in and day out we hear about high school and college students wanting to pursue a sorority and/or a fraternity based on the stereotypes these organizations uphold, well I chose to differ. I told myself if I ever decided to become a member of a sorority it would be based solely on their ethical standards, history, and values they are founded upon. Alpha Kappa Alpha, Incorporated consists of ladies of distinction and exemplary character who excel in scholarship, leadership, and service, which are qualities I have chosen to uphold. From my perspective, I encourage myself to maintain a respectable appearance and reputation which doing so inspires me to embrace my self-concept; which helps me confidently excel academically and
I am seeking membership into Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated because I want to grow and contribute my time and talent to an illustrious, originating organization. I aspire to be a part of a sisterhood where I can express myself, and have my skills nourished by prospering African –American women. This summer I was involved in a traumatic car accident and survived, tragically two of my dearest friends did not. On the car third spin I squeezed my eyes shut, and braced myself for a collision. Suddenly, the car jolted forward and flipped. At that very moment I realized that I am here for a greater purpose, and vowed to take the necessary steps to fulfill that purpose. God is not finished with me yet, and I do not want to sit on my Lord.
The three main reasons I am excited to join a sorority include my personal development, loyalty and friendship, and support of my aspirations. As a sister, there is an expectation of social interaction and personal development. I am confident that my experience and communication skills will be enriched by the activities that I participate in, the responsibility I take, and the people I meet. I am looking forward to making friends for life. I think that the atmosphere and set up of a sorority fosters and encourages the development of lifelong friendships through common aims and shared experiences. I also believe that sorority life emphasizes and encourages loyalty to and among the sisterhood, my school and the nation. Support from my sisters
Animal house, Sydney White, and The Revenge of the Nerds. These are movies about Fraternities and Sororities that everyday people associate with Greek life; alcohol, drugs, hazing,Togo parties, manipulation, and debauchery in forms of the imagination. Although these things do happen on many levels, as the war cry of the title “Admit Nothing, Deny Everything”, there are many positives. I have personally been positively influenced by a sorority that has permanently changed my life forever. My freshman year of college, I went through recruitment and was chosen to be a pledge sister for Delta Zeta Sorority. I was immediately surrounded by older DZ sisters who became my friends and mentors. I was also made to jump out of my comfort zone with the many projects, and fundraisers the sorority did. I worked with hearing impaired children, I created the homecoming float, and I organized formals and mixers. Thoughthese activities I as able to break out of my shell and have no fear of raising my hand and saying “I’ll do it”. Although Greek life might not be for everybody, there are positives factors to being a part of it.Fraternities and Sororities have made a tremendous turn from where they first began in 1776. From being kept secret, because of social status, to now being heard of in every home. Not many people understand the full meaning of Fraternity and Sorority, being in a sorority or fraternity is always having a group of people to look out of them, too always stick up for
My interest in Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, started a long time ago, in fact when my first interest was peaked I wasn’t even able to pursue my interest as I was still in high school. I was able to participate in several of the “groups” within Alpha Kappa Sorority Inc., such as the “Roses” and the “Pearls”.
My most meaningful moment in Gamma Phi Beta was the day I was elected Chapter President. Throughout my life, I have never been very confident in myself or my abilities. During the whole election process, I was expressing a lot of self doubt. I didn’t know if I could hold a position, let alone help lead our chapter. My hesitation soon disappeared when my sisters wanted me to become president. Without my sisters supporting me and encouraging me, I would not be as a happy as I am, nor would I be as confident as I am today. Gamma Phi Beta has given me so many meaningful memories, but the most important thing that Gamma Phi beta has given me is confidence in
The Gamma Upsilon Sigma Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority , Incorporated was organized in Monroe, North Carolina in 1964. The chapter was reactivated August 14, 2000 at the 78th International Boule in St. Louis, Missouri. The chapter has continued to implement the sorority’s mission to enhance the quality of life in the community by giving, uplifting, and serving one service project at a
My passion for my sorority grew exponentially during the fall of my sophomore year. Recruitment season had started and I was meeting loads of sweet, freshman girls. I loved getting to know the new faces, showing them the ropes and making them feel at home. In high school, I had never been close friends with underclassmen, so the experience of being an older “guide” was new for me. I loved it and I loved my freshmen friends.
Joining a sorority is not just four for years but for life. Going through a week-long process of meeting thousands of girls can be intense, overwhelming but intriguing and exciting as well. Recruitment to many is known as a terrifying process where girls come from all over with matching shirts, bright smiles and dreams that at the end of the week they will receive the white envelope that incases the 4x6 card with the sororities crest inviting them into their sisterhood. By preparing ahead of time, which includes building a resume, searching for recommendation letters and extensive research on each chapter, sorority recruitment doesn’t have to be an intimating process.
This definition Ross provides and informs one with the true and deep meanings of what the “sisterhood” may define sorority. A sister may tell one that a sorority may appear as a partying thing, but in reality a sorority is a group that gives back to the community while having fun at the same time. Many resources do not talk about sororities in general. The resources mentioned a special group called the Divine Nine. Together these nine societies make up what is known as the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) (Barker 17). The NPHC contributes abundantly to the community from: improving health care, raising scholarship funds, and promoting literacy to working for women’s rights, aiding the NAACP, and organizing social justice and civil rights, … (Fine 2). There are only four societies in the Divine Nine that are sororities. These were the first sororities formed on college campuses and have successfully made a massive impact in every community.
Prior to joining my sorority, I assumed that I had found and established what I thought a true community should look like here on Grounds. In my various groups and clubs, I felt that I had satisfied my craving to feel involved and connected to UVa and the Charlottesville community. But in reality, I was not satisfied. Especially at UVa, there is an overwhelming sense to prove yourself and what you can do. And I felt this pressure immensely. But as soon as I entered the sorority environment, I did not feel this pressure in the slightest and slowly became aware of a different kind of community at work. I soon realized that community within my sorority was different because the strong women around me did not care about what I did or what I could
Introduction: The purpose of this focus group is to identify why members of fraternities and sororities, groups that contain elements of a primary, intimate, and task group, continue membership after their organization enters into the storming phase during a particular task or group development. In order to achieve this, I will need to ask individual sorority and fraternity chapters about their intragroup conflict, membership perceptions, and why they choose to stay in an organization that they may disagree with. Each year, fraternity and sorority chapters receive new members, and every year the dynamics of their collectivist, primary, intimate, task group change. While their values do not change, the personality of the group does, causing members to feel out of place. In the stage of conflict, the members gossip, have cognitive dissonance, and question authority, all
