Expert Frank Bruni created a believable article stressing the idea that teens overstress over anything that regards to school, whether it be their grades, stride to follow in the expectations of others and themselves, being active, staying in sports, or attending every club a school may offer. I believe in this article due to its use of statistical evidence from other schools and colleges as well as Bruni’s personal experience. The article does have one major hitch that holds it back from becoming credible to most. This hitch is the lack of statistical evidence from a variety of other schools and backgrounds. Bruni, from statistics, attempts to prove his point that students overstress when it comes to school. Bruni used evidence collected from a story by Julie Scelfo which presents that during a thirteen month period six students committed suicide while attending the University of Pennsylvania. Scelfo goes on to explain …show more content…
Bruni’s main weakness is his lack in variety of evidence. Therefore, Bruni could solve this problem by adding more statistic information from other colleges and even high schools so that the article could apply to a wider audience. This statistical evidence could also help more people connect to his idea. Other than this main hitch Bruni has a very compelling article. Overall Bruni’s article is rather compelling, although there are clearly not enough evidence to further this article’s credibility. This could easily be resolved with the addition of more statistical evidence provided by a variety of schools at different levels of academics instead of just schools at a college level. The articles strengths shine through with its current use of statistics, even with the lack of variety. Once resolved, this article could easily appeal to a wider audience and even allow more to believe in the argument Bruni attempts to
To be clear, the intent of this essay is not to argue for or against the content; instead, we are analyzing what the article does in terms of the following:
The logic behind this article tells a main claim of an argument, though it continues to address what is happening it doesn't result to an solution. Both authors are really passionate in defending on what kinds of decisions students are making.Universities need to barge in by helping students successfully navigate their educational program. rather than placing responsibility to incoming students’ for their academic defaults.(Par8).It seems to be an reliable article by what the author's message is trying to interpret towards the community . By mention the crisis that's occurring gives the crowd anxiety for what is to come and the trouble they could possibly face with stating their resources they had discovered. The sound judgment of this piece was very informative with providing reliable resources to help back up their
I found this essay to be trustworthy for two reasons. One thing that this essay deals with is accuracy, we see that it is written in 2016, making this article and the facts contained within recent and up to date. Along with being accurate, this article is well-supported. Throughout Bruinuis’ essay, there are several links to credible sources such as the RAND corporation,
The aim of this essay is to critically appraise one of the research articles and reflect on what is good
Durkheim argues that the suicide rate is a social factor that can be interpreted as an indicator for social solidarity within a society (http://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/BF01114474).
Over 90% of people who commit suicide have a mental illness in America. Don’t you believe if people gave mental disorders/illness more attention, those suicide rates would decrease? Mental illness is a serious issue in America. To understand Mental Illness, you need to know what it means. Based on Merriam Webster dictionary Mental Illness is “ Any illness with significant psychological or behavioral manifestations that is associated with either a painful or distressing symptom or an impairment in one or more important areas of functioning.” If America gave more attention to mental health, suicide rates would decrease, crime rates decrease, and death rates could decrease.
The third article is associated with psychological disorders increasing in college campuses. Back in 2008 and article reported that half of college students experienced having suicidal episodes or have considered suicide. Many suffered from depression while others were on medication for anxiety or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder(ADHD). As stated, “Major depressive disorder, for example, has nine criteria including depressed mood; loss of interest or pleasure in activities; changes in appetite or body weigh; changes in sleep patterns; feelings of worthlessness; and suicidal thoughts.” (Reifman, A. ,2011) Stress can contribute to a state of mind easily causing depressed moods along with mood swings. For instance, when bills need to be paid and a worker has been underpaid by his or hers employer things can get stressful. Multiple mental problems can contribute to thoughts of suicide as well. So long as university administrators are aware that mental health is very important to college
We found the article to be interesting and insightful, and brilliantly written. We believe the authors have put their findings into context. The major points they should consider are the following:
The article I read is entitled, “Suicide and Students With High-Incidence Disabilities: What Special Educators Need to Know” by Carrie A. Wachter and Emily C. Bouck. It began with an interesting fact that really blew my mind: “Within a typical high school classroom, it is likely that three students (one boy and two girls) have made a suicide attempt in the past year” (P. 66). It terrified me, as a recent high school graduate, that three of my classmates could have possibly attempted to commit suicide and it terrifies me even more as a future educator. I hope that I, especially going into the Exceptional Student Education field, would be able to see and recognize the signs that any of my students are even contemplating killing themselves. The purpose of this article is to show how suicide pertains to students with
This journal article is reliable because it comes from a university researcher, this suggests that the information is credible. This is argued as the individual will have knowledge of research processes. The information is of worth as it is recent.
Why did the authors do this study? Why was it worth it? What was missing in the literature- what was the GAP the researchers seeked to fill? Answer will likely be found by a critical reading of the INTRODUCTION.
Please re-examine the way the conclusion was written. Is the statement of the conclusion biased? Is the definition of the key terms neutral and acceptable? Or is it controversial? Is there a need to revise the statement of the conclusion?
The articles through their conclusions each had their own strengths and weaknesses. Sansone and Thoman’s strengths were shown through the extensive amount of research they completed to provide evidence to their arguments. They used a collection of different studies to explain their argument that gave justification to their conclusions. The
“Contemporary American society pulls teenagers away from school toward social and recreational pursuits. There is widespread peer pressure not to succeed academically. One of five students say that their friends make fun of people who try to do well in school. More than one-half of all students say they never discuss their schoolwork with friends.”
