5. “Frederick Winslow Taylor, the father of management science, is a controversial figure in management history. His task-focused innovations in industrial engineering, particularly in time and motion studies, paid off in dramatic improvements in productivity. At the same time, he has been credited with destroying the soul of work, of dehumanising factories, making men into automatons.” His key publication on his theories of work was “The Principles of Scientific Management.” (SkyMark, n.d.).
“He was a proponent of removing anything that didn 't add value and finding the best practices possible.” (Sniderman, 2012).

Taylor conducted a number of experiments in the workplace, resulting in the development of four principles of scientific management (“Taylorism”). (MindTools, n.d.). Using these four principles or key features of Frederick Taylor’s rather ruthless and strongly task-focused theory to analyse the job performance of Jim Young, Director SkillPower Ltd, I have identified the following:

1. Principle. Replace working by "rule of thumb," or simple habit and common sense, and instead use the scientific method to study work and determine the most efficient way to perform specific tasks. Taylor advocated active gathering, analysing, and converting information into laws, rules, processes and even mathematical formulas for completing tasks.
