When discussing this topic there is a lot of controversy that surrounds what exactly it means to fight for freedom and being considered a terrorist. A freedom fighter is often labeled as someone who fights for their freedom, and often time’s war, and defying those in charge are ways in which freedom fighters go about advancing their agendas. When looking at the events of the past present and predicting future events and trends you can see that especially in the United States of America we fight for what we feel is right. When looking at the differences between freedom fighters and terrorists’ one can look at the motives that are behind the act that is being committed. By definition both freedom fighters and terrorists have the same outcomes which in most case is a …show more content…
We responded as any country of this size would and by our response we labeled these guys as the problem. If you flip perspectives and were fighting on the other side of 9/11 wouldn’t you feel as if you are a freedom fighter because you are fighting for what you believe in weather or not it is right or wrong to your faith. When looking at the film and what we discussed in class conclusions can be drawn that there is a lot of comparisons between freedom fighting and terrorism but what separates the two are the motives behind the act. Terrorism often falls under envy and the want and need to have what someone has and to obsess over it. 9/11 can be seen as another country envying our strength and tries to take a shot and cause as much destruction as possible. Freedom fighting is more so about acquisition, overthrowing those in power, and creating a movement with those who feel oppressed. These two concepts are controversial in their own right as there are many similarities and differences but when looking at the big picture we can conclude that these are similar but different
First, I see terrorism as war and a terrorist in my view is a soldier going to war for certain purpose and reason to destroy. If captured, they should be treated as prisoners of war. What comes to the mind of terrorists is always war such as in military actions because they believe they have a cause to fight for. They are not countries declaring war
When the sons of liberty first started out New York in 1765 many people thought that they were a terrorist group. But many people thought they were a terrorist organization. But many people thought they weren't. The sons of liberty are not terrorist because they were fighting for their freedom from British rule. On the other hand someone might argue that there terrorist because they destroyed British property and didn't obey their king. However the sons of liberty are not terrorist because they were taxed without representation and had their freedom of speech taken away from them.
Terrorist attacks have increased over the last twenty years, but one of the most remembered is the attack on the World Trade Center in New York City. It happened on September 11, 2001; and is commonly referred to as 9/11. Americans grow up learning details about 9/11; but rarely do we learn about a personal experience. In Adam Mayblum’s email “The Price We Pay,” he tells the story of what happened to him, and others around him on the day of September 11, 2001. Mayblum explains in paragraph ten “If you want to kill us, leave us alone because we will do it by ourselves. If you want to make us stronger, attack and we unite.” He made an excellent point with that statement, because he is right. He provides us with imagery, thoughts on terrorism, and strong use of emotions throughout the story that brings us a very well written narrative.
John Brown's actions at Pottawatomie Creek and Harper's Ferry can be seen as acts of terrorism by a person or peoples opinion, but a closer study of modern and historic violent actions show he was a freedom fighter. Certainly, this is factual because there is no actual definition of terrorism, it is simply an opinion on someone's actions. Therefore, it is almost irrelevant for one be convicted a terrorist if no one can actually have a justified reasoning behind their choices.
George W. Bush once said that “Our enemies have made the mistake that America’s enemies always make. They see liberty and think they saw weakness.” 9/11 was a devastating day in American history. Men, from the terrorist group Al Quada, attacked America on their own soil for the first time since Japan attack us at Pearl Harbor. But there are some things we can isolate from it. The basic overview of it. What were the terrorists doing to get ready for the day, and what was their major purpose and intention.
Many citizens and immigrants were subjected to arrests and searches of homes. Some were even subjected to be sent to prison under the assumption that these people were possible terrorists. Soon after the arrests, Guantanamo Bay was established as a prison to hold possible terrorists, and were not protected under US law. Other factors were also later violated in the film, including the spying of citizens through libraries and book purchases, to mandatory checks at airports frequently, all under the base of assumptions that a citizen could be aligned with terrorists. The last thing that the film brought up was the attack of free speech. Police were either able to arrest or stop people that were practicing the right to free speech, other cases had police officers infiltrate and provoke protesters to become violent.
Terrorism is what others call patriotism. Terrorism has evolved throughout the timeline of history. It also blurs the line that helps us understand which side we’re on, mainly because in our modern day there are no clear sides.
The term terrorism is used widely in present day especially in the United States. Terrorism is a double standard, the people who commit those terrorist acts, commit the acts out of beliefs and in their eyes ok. Terrorism can be described as the illegitimate use of force to achieve a political objective by targeting innocent people (Laqueur, 1987). To me the definition mention above is a great definition to describe terrorism as a crime. To aim for innocent people to prove a point which lead major injuries or death in most cases is to most people would be a crime, no questions asked. According to Martha Crenshaw (1995), “Terrorism cannot be defined unless the act, target and possibility of success are analyzed”. So to think, terrorist are people who commit these acts as a way to get their political or religious point across. If we look at the some of the most famous terrorist acts they are automatically labeled crimes. 9/11 was a crime because the persons affiliated with the act, targeted the
Often in American history terrorism has gotten the best of us. Terrorism has torn our people apart and caused us to be afraid of going about our lives, therefore succeeding in its purpose. One of those attacks being the event that occurred September 11, 2001 when “terrorists
Conflict theorist would view nine – eleven as a situation that allowed certain people to be discriminated against and put others in power. One way they can get this view is from Presidency. When the attack happened George W. Bush was president in his first term. It is conspiracy theories that said that the government knew about the attack before it happened. It was said that CIA knew terrorist was in America and FBI knew that the terrorist was taking flight lessons to hijack planes. The information was told to President Bush and he did nothing about it. After the attack, Bush then did everything to get into Americas good grace. He signed the nine- eleven commission bill which he wasn’t going to do at first. He then heightened security in the airlines and around America. He manipulated Americans to think that with him they would be safe and that they would be avenged by the War on Terror. With all the promises he made it brought him enough power to get reelected into presidency for his second term. Another way to get this view is after nine – eleven people started to discriminate against Middle Eastern and Muslims. People generalized the people against the attack was from the Middle East and was Muslims so then they started to discriminate against them in America because they felt as though they all was behind it and responsible. They was discriminated against by people because some would not serve them in stores and they would be judged in schools and at work. A lot of them who had their own business had to shut down because they wasn’t getting any business and was getting attacked. Also their privacy no longer exist. Some of them had their houses raided and phones tapped. They was also hassled at the airport by having to get check ten times more than other Americans. Some Americans didn’t even want to be on the airplane with
Terrorist and Freedom fighter can be separated through there definition, but not through there synonyms that clarify an unjust distinction. It is a mentality that majority of American’s apply whether they realize it or not. Individuals according to Steven Handel believes that we implement “The Us vs. Them Mentality” by extension elaborates the mentality that individuals for instance, Americans, give people who are different than us through race, gender, age, nationality, culture, religion, or socioeconomic status. In his article, The Us vs. Them Mentality: How Group Thinking Can Irrationally Divide Us, Handel maintains that “We see it all the time in politics (Republicans vs. Democrats)” in other words these two groups act irrationally and uncooperative. Consequently this causes the two groups to be blind and fail to recognize other people’s interests and values. Do we as American’s also fail to recognize the interest or values of a terrorist or do we just assume that they are pure evil? I believe that we fail to recognize a terrorist interests and values. The ends justify the means but American’s should not ignore these common differences. Americans should be super mindful of the group that we identify ourselves in and the way we view other people because it might have a negative effect.
The attackers were Islamic terrorists from Saudi Arabia and several other Arab nations. Osama bin Laden’s al-Qaeda terrorist organization were allegedly acting the U.S. in retaliation for their support of Israel, their involvement in the Persian Gulf War and their military presence in the Middle East. Some of the terrorists lived in the United States for more than a year and had taken flying lessons at American flight schools. The others had snuck into the country in the months before September 11th and were considered the “muscle” in the operation. They smuggled box-cutters and knives through the loose security at three East Coast airports and boarded four different airliners bound for California, they chose these flights because they were filled with jet fuel for the long flight across the country. After takeoff, they raided the cockpit of the planes and took control, doing this turned the normal passenger jets into huge missiles.
What aspects define a terrorist from that which defines a freedom-fighter? Well the main answer is ‘different perspectives.’ In order to further dive into the relevance of different perspectives “One person 's terrorist is another person 's Freedom Fighter,” shall be analysed and discussed. ¬
When we think of terrorist, we might think of radical Islamic individuals or groups who would take pride in killing anyone who is not Muslim. Even more, there are antagonistically people who want nothing more but to destroy the lives of innocence people because of their belief system. Take an individual like Theodore Kaczynski for instance; he was a former University of California at Berkeley math professor. Otherwise known as the “Unabomber,” he was indeed a terrorist because he used explosives that killed three people and wounded eighteen others in a span of almost two decades. Even more, his brother David Kaczynski was responsible for his capture.
When comparing the definition of anarchism against terrorism, anarchism is the ideology or motive to oppose any form of governing body or state that rules the people. Anarchists hate all forms of government and seek an unbound body of people. This normally does not have a chain or command or cell group just a number of people who agree to disagree. Terrorism on the other hand is hard to pinpoint what is a terrorist and what is actually considered a terrorist act. Nationally, if one where to compare all the U.S. Agencies' definition of terrorism, all the agencies would have a different answer. In regards to the definition of terrorism internationally, there is none. This is partly because one nations freedom fighter is another nations terrorist.
