An issue in school that effects many inner-city schools is gang relations. “Uniforms add measures of safety in identical dress. Gang identification is obscured. Group violence and theft are dissipated... Children are no longer identified by their 'colors.' Uniform dress alleviated the feelings of imminent danger for students who were afraid they might inadvertently dress in gang colors.” (Should Students Have to Wear School Uniforms?). This serves as a way to get rid of gang violence and affiliation in the school environment. Without gang recognition, there is less gang violence.

Youth gang violence has turned into an unmistakable issue in the public eye reaching across national boundaries as well as socio-economic, cultural, racial, and class distinctions. Not only is the problem widely dispersed geographically, but its incidence is also extensive, making it a common, acknowledged, and a mainstream behavior for many teens. Gang activity is extremely common in lower income neighborhoods and ethnic ghettos where underprivileged children are regularly recruited. Board of Education decision, and the Civil Rights Movement. The first nationwide study undertaken of the nature and extent of gang violence was reported by Walter B. Miller. Miller whose study concentrated primarily on the increase of gang violence and four major motives such as respect, guarding local communities, control, and gain the of monetary goods.

Gang involvement is on the rise in most communities affecting socioeconomic status, racial relationships, and inhabitants (Esbensen et. al., 2012, p. 128). About one third of every community experiences some sort of gang violence (Tucker). Although, it may not directly affect one specific community. It is making a great impact on the new generation. Gang violence among teens has become more prevalent in today’s society. For example, during the summer of 2017 in Lancaster South Carolina, five teenagers were murdered by other teens in gang affiliated behaviors. Thus, resulting in imprisonment. The question is how we punish these teens. Should they receive the death penalty for committing an act of murder? Or should they spend the rest of their lives in prison with a chance of being released back into society. What is the value of their lives? Understand they are in the prime of their lives.

The United States of America is commonly called a “melting pot,” due to its diversity in races, cultures, and religions all mixing together as one. Yet, as great as all that diversification sounds, there is a dark side to it as well. The USA is plagued by gang violence due to racism and segregation. The diverseness that makes the USA so great, is also the cause for one of its biggest social stigmas.

Many families are left devastated from losing their children to gang related killings. For example, Javon Reilly, a student who went to Van Horn High School was walking home and was shot. Tymon Reed and Javon had an issue because one of Javon’s friends stole some marijuana. When Javon was walking home Tymon happened to drive past him and pulled out a gun on him, Javon tried to wrestle the gun out of his hand and that’s when he was shot. After getting shot Javon attempted to limp away but Tymon shot him multiple times after that. When authorities arrived his friends were giving him CPR. He was rushed to the hospital and that’s where he died. Too many teenagers are involved with gang related or drug related stuff and sometimes it costs them their life.

A primary focus of schools is to make their students feel safe, and to help them in any way they can. If gang association is affecting, or has the potential to affect the students' safety, something should be done. Gang associated clothing has been a puzzling conundrum for schools for a long time. School uniforms would be an easy fix, but some schools refrain from initiating school uniforms because some families cannot afford the specialized clothing. So, what should schools do? I think that, in order to address gang violence, a school uniform must be initiated, but an advantage should be given to those who cannot afford the uniforms, to ensure everybody is equal.

Wearing uniform to school have increased of the years, although some schools have not adopted the school uniform policy. Administrators and staff believe that wearing uniform have made schools safer for students, have improved school attendance and increased student achievement, and have reduced the changes of students being bullied. However, others have argued that wearing uniforms have not improve student behavior and wearing the uniform have infringed on student’s freedom of individuality. This essay will explain the importance of adopting a school uniform policy, why all public schools should have a uniform dress code, and how wearing uniform will provide a unified school environment. Therefore, all public schools should adopt a school uniform policy because, it uses will help to reduce bullying, provide a safer learning environment, and help to recognize gang affiliated members.

Violence in schools today has become a huge problem for educators and students alike. At its worst, we have seen cases of where violence has lead to injury and even deaths in some of the cases. Many questions have been asked as to whether or not these cases could have been prevented and are the schools doing enough to watch for this type of pattern in certain students. While the school system cannot be held liable for a student’s actions, it makes one wonder if it could have been caught before a tragedy happens, if educators were to be on the lookout for behavior relating to these incidents happening.

(2013) defines school violence, provides a greater understanding about school violence and its impact on students and teachers, and discusses prevention strategies which can be implemented in U.S. school to reduce the risk and prevalence of school violence against students and teachers. Specifically, through a literature review, Espelage et al. (2013) defines school violence as being any action that results in the creation of a victim within the school or academic environment. These actions commonly include bullying, intimidation, gang activity, locker theft, weapon use, and physical and/or verbal assault (Espelage et al., 2013).
