There is supposed to be equal protection for everyone in the United States, but in reality, there isn’t. People who are minority and of color get targeted, because of their race, gender, and class, while wealthy white people are put on a pedal stool and hardly ever get in trouble by the law. In many case the wealthy are not arrested nor are they given a sentence for their wrongful doing, they are allowed to get away with murder (86). In the meantime, poor people are not given the same treatment and can be sentence to 15 years, 25 years, or life in prison for committing minor offense. The Social sphere is inequality that has increased, women who work the same hours as a man are looked down on because they are supposed to be at home with the
There are many social injustice issues that the world is facing today. Many ethnic and racial groups are still fighting hard against prejudice and discrimination. Another group that is still facing inequality today, is women. When it comes to inequality in the world today, women as a whole get overlooked. We like to think that we have evolved in our culture and have come so far that often when we think about inequality, we tend to focus and think about minorities such as African Americans, Native Americans and the like. We don’t really think about women and inequality, most people think of women having the same rights and privileges as everyone else does in America, but after doing research and looking at statistics women inequality is still
It goes without saying that throughout society there exists varying degrees of gender stratification. Although many have attempted to understand why this difference between the distribution of property, power and prestige exists amongst genders, the answer is still somewhat ambiguous. Although the United States isn’t a perfect example of equality amongst genders, compared to a majority of nations across the globe, its conditions for both genders are relatively similar. One country notorious for its massive discrepancy in terms of access to property, power and prestige between genders is Saudi Arabia. In Saudi Arabia and a number of Middle Eastern countries, there exists a great deal of gender stratification. According to the 2008 Human Rights
As time has progressed and colonization has evolved, gender in the United States has been constructed in a manner that is unknown in other countries. Our society has made different stereotypes for certain sexes. It is socially impossible to not make a collation between sex and gender in the United States. Women are viewed the same in the professional world and in the home life perspective. All roles played by women are considered to be inadequate or insignificant compared to men. Gender characteristics, such as masculinity and femininity, has become a cultural construct. Gender is a social construct that was designed to confine people to a certain title and cultural agenda.
Inequalities are hard to escape from in today’s society, and all genders and identities have setbacks that need to be sought out and resolved. When most people hear about gender equality, they automatically assume that the speaker is talking about women’s rights, but both men and women have struggles that won’t just go away on their own. On top of that, transgendered people have another weight on their shoulders, no matter which gender they’re transitioning to. The world is constantly moving in different directions, and no matter the gender of an individual, the fact that they deserve the right to equal pay, treatment, education, visibility, and healthcare still stands.
Throughout history, gender inequality has been in the closet. The debate about inequality is a frequent topic in blogs, editorials, or when examined through scientific research. It is taboo, however, to discuss inequalities from within the closeted workplace. Open discussion is limited in a corporate culture that promotes individualism. It is not in a company's best interest to expose its own bias, especially when the bias concerns race or gender. Exposing bias is often met with employee dismissal and can escalate into corporate legal consequences. The idea of gender inequality is necessary to bring up in conversation so further research can be done on the issue and discussion can be open as to what is needed. Unfortunately, polarizing opinions can lead to workplace clashes with colleagues or managers. Gender wage disparities are complex and multi-generational. Historically, gender-based social behaviors institutionalize inequality in corporate cultures that are structured to promote individualism.
For many years now, women have had to fight for their right to be considered equal human beings in a state of law. Although the Women’s Suffrage movement did incredible things for the female race, did it solve all of America’s gender inequality issues? On a legal stance, yes, but in an everyday practice of social norms, there is still work to be done.
As the inequalities in this world are increasing, the amount of people aware of it is decreasing. People’s views on inequalities have been advancing for years; but as it became more common people have stopped noticing these social injustices. As the world is transitioning, people's views on gender and race are developing with it and it is for the worse.
Gender Inequality is when one is perceived or treated differently because of their identified gender. Gender identity is combination of our biological characteristics and social factors. Biological characteristics that symbolize a men is his masculinity, this causes people to think that men are stronger than women and this leads the society to perceive women as being physically weak. The difference in perception and treatment for comparable work is what serves as the basics for gender inequality. Gender Inequality is all around us such as in sports, politics, and the workforce; all members of society have felt the presence of gender inequality in one way or another.
While some human development theorists contend that gender inequality is not seen as an area of concern in developing countries due to the improvement of rights, on the other hand some human development theorists contradict these statements as women are still beaten and killed in the third world countries, like Afghanistan, and women in the first world countries, like America, still fight for gender equality today.
The article discussed the debate between governor Romney and President Obama. The article brought out how both candidates focused on womens' labor as a family issue. The sociology aspect of gender discrimination and workplace inequality is emphasized as well. The author states at the latter part of the article that: “both candidates need to be better informed on the complex factors that produce workplace inequality (Debating Gender Workplace Inequality).”
To think sociologically is to think about the whole not just one of the parts, a society being the whole and an individual a part. Sociology believes that the individual doesn’t exist outside of his/her society, there is no ‘human nature’ but that every person is merely a reflection of the society to which they belong. Their morals, values, customs, and prejudices reflect what their society believes in and considers important. For example, when looking at an individual’s success of failure at school or work some disciplines would look at the person to learn how/why that happened, sociology however would look at the society of that person for the reason. It would look at the person’s race, gender, socioeconomic status, and other factors that a person has no control over but is simply born into, sociology would then look at how that society views someone in that place in their society for the explanation of why the person succeeded of failed.
Gender inequalities, which have become more and more dominant in societies, have affected women all across the world. In relation to Middle Eastern countries, there have been rules that women must oblige by constituted along with their religion. Whereas in the United States religion isn’t as dominant, but rather the thoughts and gender microaggressions when compared to male counter-parts are more significant. The misogyny in both regions consists of the deprivation of gender rights that are given by their government, such as the Women’s Suffrage movement in the U.S. Middle Eastern countries have a similarity in which the Quran acts as the law towards Muslim women. Even though there have been acts like the Equal Pay Act created in the U.S, the
The social gender inequality has been a serious problem since the ancient period. Women were dominated by men and had little power in the society. Men were mostly doing agriculture work or hunting. On the contrary, women were basically doing works like house cleaning, breeding children, and making clothes that they played the domestic role in a family. Although the historical event—enlightenment emphasized the importance of human rights, it is excluded the women’s rights. After the emergency of capitalism, the situation became worse and women had less power and rights either in family or in society. People earn money through works and consume products according to their financial ability. The gap made by wealth, status, and power promotes
Sexism is one of many topic that needs to be discuss. Sexism is prejudice, stereotyping, or discrimination, typically against women, on the basis of sex. Gender inequality is referred as unequal treatment or perceptions of individuals based on their gender. Womens gets less advantage than men because men gets more opportunity than women. Even though some people may say otherwise, sexism is a big obstacle for many in the U.S. because of gender inequality, intersectionality and misogyny.
Gender inequality has been a problem in the U.S. and in the world. As it has gotten better with the inequality between male and female, there is still a problem. Women get paid less than men. The title of men and females in the work force is also different. Many men can work feminine called jobs, but women can’t work the masculine jobs. I learned about these in my readings.
