The teams have very different roles depending on whether they are at bat or catching. At bat players are tasked to open a play and run the lanes until they cross the escape line. Catching players are tasked to hit the players running the lanes with the ball. There can be a maximum of 2 players running in each lane at the same time. A player can be hit in both lanes once. Oina is actually what baseball was based off of. The team at bat is selected by a ritual where the players have to grab the bat, thrown by the referee, and the last one to be able to place at least 4 fingers on the bat wins. The game begins with the team at bat, with one of the players throwing the ball while another player of the same team has to hit it with a wooden bat and
Many sports are equal across genders with only a few changes here and there; this is not the case with Lacrosse. Lacrosse has been played in the United States of America since the Native Americans were the only people to inhabit the States. It was a game that originated as a ceremonial ritual in the Iroquois tribe. Since then, lacrosse has evolved into the sport we play today; but instead of lacrosse just being a men’s game, women play now, too. However, the men’s and women’s lacrosse team have evolved differently, with almost everything about the two games being different.
The NFL’s choice to focus on wives and daughters of men, who by their positions in the NFL are powerful and affluent, suggests that a women’s place in relation to football is the men on the sidelines. Of the 30 women featured in the rivalry campaign, which went public in January 2011, only four of them held any type of position within an NFL organization. Two were daughters of an owner, one was a cheerleading director, and the last one was part of a large family sports empire. Simply put, the ads also did not feature any women who were not directly related to the league through a male counterpart. Males had to serve as the female’s direct link to the game; they could not be fans on their own. Furthermore, the Rivalry campaign chose to limit women by making them look stylish and pretty, while standing next to a man who had an
Looking at the National Hockey League in comparison to the National Women's Hockey League, the quality of playing is far better for the men than it is the women. While both leagues were established for the same reason, to play hockey, the logistics are as different as they can be. Women are treated far more poorly than the men in about every aspect of professional sports. Even though it was born out of the National Hockey League, the National Women’s Hockey League is not only challenged, but compared to every aspect of the NHL, which includes: wages, rules and regulations, LGBT norms, and the overall questioning of why women and men cannot play together in one league. Despite the downsides the women league faces, the player
Nine people play on the field at once and there are four bases. When playing offense a pitcher pitches to you and you have to hit the ball with a bat. If the pitcher doesn't pitch strikes, and she throws four balls, or if you get hit by the ball you get to go to first. You can also strikeout by not hitting the ball in fair territory or not hitting the ball at all by three strikes. If you hit the ball you run to first and try to get there before the defense players throw you out, and if they do then you're out, but if they don't you're safe and you get to stay on first, and then the next batter is up.
For decades, sports films in American have established connections between movies and American values, with each sports film providing a different perspective and more depth to different values. With the frequent ties of historical context, movies draw upon real athletes, situations, and struggles. The historical context further represents social and cultural beliefs during the time of the movie’s setting, helping to portray the past. This paper will discuss several American values identified throughout the movies viewed, whether its progress, freedom, or equality. Through a fictional portrayal of the All American Girls Professional Baseball League with women fighting for their rights to promote progress in world where a woman’s role was to care for the house; the emotional fight for equality with a desegregated school fighting to play football as one; an underdog finding personal success in a sport that said he was not good enough, and a cross country team success provides a better future.
The game of baseball originated from a game called rounders. Rounders consisted of two teams, a striking team and a fielding team. The striking team’s goal was to hit the ball in order to score “rounders,” or runs, in modern baseball. The rules were similar to the rules of baseball today. There were two teams consisting of nine players and four bases. One difference between rounders and baseball is that there is no foul territory in rounders. Any hit ball is in play and the player may run. In baseball, the ball must be hit in between the foul lines painted on the third and first base lines (Olmos).
The rules of the game are simple if you don’t over think them! The pitcher throws the ball to the catcher. If the batter hits the ball he can run as far as he wants to without him getting out! If someone on defense catches the
The origins of baseball have been the subject of debate for more than a century. Baseball and the other modern bat and ball running games like, cricket and rounders, were developed from folk games in England. Early forms of baseball had a number of names, including "baseball," "goal ball," "round ball," "fletch-catch," "stool ball," and simply, "base." In one version of the game, teams pitched to themselves and runners went around the bases in the opposite direction that they do in today's game. Players also could be put out by being hit with the ball just as now, in some versions a batter was called out on three strikes. There isn’t much that you need for the sport all you really need a bat, ball, leather gloves optional something to signify where the bases are, and the last thing is a team. In a team, there is a coach and 9 players for each spot. There is 3 outfielders, 3 basemen, 1 short man, a pitcher, and lastly a catcher. The basic gist of the game is that you need to get the most points by running

As society progresses, homosexuality becomes more prevalent and people become more comfortable with the subject of sexuality. Homosexuality is something that has dated back to Greek times, but just in the past 50-100 years has become more common; not that homosexuality did not exist, just that more people are becoming more comfortable and coming out. Gay and Lesbian people are all around us, weather it be the work place, schools, and specifically athletics. Many coaches, players, and athletic directors are gay and are becoming aware of the double standard and homophobia that exists in the heterosexual world, most commonly at the collegiate and professional level.
What is Baseball? “A game played on a large field by two teams of nine players who try to score runs by hitting a small ball with a bat and then running to each of the four bases without being put out” (Merriam-Webster). In baseball, you not only have someone hitting the ball, but you also have someone who pitches the ball to the batter and someone who fields the ball after it is hit. In order to get a batter or runner out, you have to tag them with the ball in your glove, catch the ball in the air, strike out the batter, or touch the base with the ball in your glove. Each batter gets four balls and three strikes which determines whether the batter walks or strikes out. These are the basic rules of baseball that have been enforced by umpires for over a century.
Jazz has, historically, been a masculine artistic form. From its early days, men have dominated the genre and, even to this day, women are still underrepresented. During the Swing Era, the authors of several articles in Downbeat magazine discussed gender equality in jazz. I found the articles to be telling and particularly interesting. It is quite unfortunate that, historically, attitudes towards gender in art have been destructive.
The male gender role is beginning to emerge as an important and legitimate controversial topic. There are two conditions that defined a male: biological and social. Biology provides a dichotomous male and female prototypes. Male babies are traditionally born with one X and one Y chromosome, as well as the genitalia, called the testes. A key biological function of males is the reproduction, in which a male attempts to produce offspring that will carry their genes. Males typically have higher testosterone levels than females, which stimulates the development of male secondary sexual characteristics, such as aggression, growth in hairs, testes, and muscles. However, the social components of a male play a significant role in the definition of a
At the University of Oregon, the campus has strived to be equal for students of all genders for many years. It has been successful in many of its attempts to make the environment safe and equal for all of its students, but there still are locations on campus that are not as equal as many people would like to believe them to be. At the Student Recreation Center, it is one of the few locations on campus where there are still some examples of division between genders and privileges to men and cisgender students. They are not noticeable at first because as it has been studied, people are just not aware of what they are doing is gendered (Stewart). We might not think our actions in a gym environment is gendered, but once you take a closer look at
This is a game of balls and bats played by two teams, each consisting of nine players. The object is to score runs by hitting a fair ball with the bat. The field is a diamond shape with bases in each corner with an order of first, second, third, and home. After the ball is hit, the runner runs counterclockwise around the bases. When a batter gets to home plate, a point is scored. The batter waits at home plate to receive a pitch from the opposing team’s pitcher. The pitcher is set up equally in the middle of all four bases. There is an outer field on the opposite side of home plate where the ball can also be hit to. Each defensive player has a position in the field. The batter gets three chances to make contact with a good pitch. For each good pitch missed, the batter receives a strike. For every pitch that is not good, or outside the strike zone, the batter receives a ball. If the batter gets three strikes it counts as an out. If a batter receives four balls they are allowed to proceed or walk to first. When a ball is hit foul, it will result as a strike, though a batter cannot receive a third strike from a foul ball. When the ball is hit, the fielders are expected to get the ball and throw it to the closest base of which a runner is heading to. If the ball is caught in the air by the fielders, the runner is called out. There are three outs per inning, then the teams switch sides. If a pitch is hit over the outfield fence it results in a homerun and the
