Globalization, the international interaction between people and their ideas, have led to economic development, cultural diffusion, and technological advancements across the world. For instance, McDonald's, one of the most popular fast food franchises in American culture, has rapidly spread and developed across the globe. In Hong Kong, China, the Western fast-food chain has influenced the city because it has instilled the social norm for young kids to get a fast meal, while also developing the city into a postmodern metropolitan center. This illustrates the symbolic influence of the West, and particularly the United States on the rest of the world. Egyptian customers accepted the Chinese business owners because they know that the Chinese would not break their deeply embed traditions and customs. Moreover, after critiquing this article one can observe through a sociological lens the similarities and differences of the gender roles of women in Egyptian and American culture. Both cultures are similar because the women are subjected and portrayed as inferior figures under the dominated patriarchal system of men. However, some of the behaviors and norms do not parallel between these cultures. Hessler discusses that Egyptian women in the process of getting married go shopping for lingerie with their families, and that “the most self-confident American woman would be mortified by the idea of shopping for lingerie with her fiancé, her mother, and her teenage brother, not to mention doing this in the presence of two Chinese shop owners, their assistant, and a foreign journalist” (Hessler 3). This clearly illustrates a major difference between the behaviors of women in two different societies, and there are many other striking difference such as American women having the choice to have extensive mobility after marriage, opposed to Egyptian women who must spend their days in the house after getting married. All in all globalization may have a major effect in creating a uniformed and organized world, because with the spread of people comes theirs traditions and ideas, thus shaping how a society construct
