Food quality has emerged over the past decade as a top concern for consumers leaving many large food brands struggling to adapt. Growing concern over the rate of obesity, genetically modified organisms (GMO), and overuse of antibiotic are the most significant drivers leading consumers to purchase healthier food. New companies are successfully targeting this demographic using terms such as “Non GMO”, “Gluten – Free”, and “Organic.” Meanwhile revenue continues to decline for legacy food companies including, General Mills, Kellogg Co, and Kraft Foods Inc. struggle to adapt to changing consumer preferences. Large traditional food companies are seeking to counter these trends by acquiring existing health food companies, developing new products,

Food Inc. opens in an American supermarket and draws attention to the unnatural nature of year-round tomatoes and boneless meat. It pulls aside the curtain that is concealing the truth about food from the consumer. After the brief intro, the movie shifts its focus to the topic of fast food and its impact on the meat industries. Fast food virtually started with McDonald’s. When they decided to simplify their menu and hire employees that repeated one task over and over for minimum wage, the result was the fast food phenomenon that swept the United States, and then the world. Today, McDonald’s is the largest purchaser of beef and potatoes in the United States, and is one of the largest purchasers of pork, chicken, tomatoes, and apples. Though

During 2006, the first part of Alan’s plan was to convince bankers into giving Ford Motor Company billions of dollars to complete this company overhaul. Once they were provided with the right amount of money, the plan was able to be executed. With this plan came a timeline; by the year 2009, the company planned to have the ‘One Ford’ mission in action and to see production increase. Because of such a short timeline, HRD was ultimately involved throughout the entire process. As part of the company’s “One Team” approach, certain areas of the plan are discussed and analyzed to examine if anything can be improved; this is accomplished by using everyone in the company. Employees are able to share how they feel about certain areas of their work and give their opinions on how certain things should change or stay the same; after everything is examined, the leaders of the company are the ones held responsible and accountable for making the changes, if any, to whatever was examined (Ford Motor Company, 2010). During this process, new strategies can also be provided by using the employee’s opinions and assessments of their strengths and weaknesses. This ultimately shows the use of human resource development as part of the company’s competitive strategy. Without the employees understanding how to complete their job correctly, the company would plunder. Thus, the company makes

Prior to the arrival of David Homer, General Mills Canada had been a successful subsidiary of the General Mills brand. Although employees at General Mills Canada have generated positive sales growth every year before his tenure, Homer notices a lack of initiative, drive, and desire to embrace fundamental changes by his employees, a sign of progress hindered by risk aversion. He notices that data is pouring into the company and employees are using this data to analyze potential opportunities for growth, yet they are reluctant to take any actions. Thus, his ultimate challenge is to integrate innovative thinking into the General Mills Canada culture, and determine what “processes and tools” to use to achieve this goal, since employees are
Employee is one of the most important assets of a company as they have significant influential power to the success of a company. Therefore, effective and efficient human resource management is crucial to every organization. However, the emergence of the centralized Human Resource Department (HRD) has created conflicts on whether the responsibility of human resource management should lie on line managers or HRD. The debate about the roles of line managers and centralized HRD in human resource management has been ongoing since couple of years ago (Hutchinson and Purcell, 2003). In my opinion, HRD remains as one of the important role within an organization despite the need
