What if I told you that you have most likely been eating food that has been tampered with and injected with diseases? For years Scientists have been editing the blue prints of your food. These scientists are changing the genetic structure of most plants and animals that we eat. “Plants are now engineered for insect resistance, fungal resistance, viral resistance, herbicide resistance, changed nutritional content, improved taste, and improved storage.”(Wikipedia.org/genetically modified food)
Genetically engineered food is an important topic because we hear about organic and genetically modified foods all the time; especially if you eat plants or animals from most large companies. Still, most people don’t understand what those two even mean. There are few worries about genetically modified actually damaging our body and/or giving us diseases. Genetically modified plants might also be damaging our precious food chain. For example lets say farmers were putting pesticides in fruit. But some of the seeds blow into the flowers, so when the bees come to pollinate they come in contact with pesticides,

The Séralini affair is a study created by Gilles-Eric Séralini that was done on rats who were fed corn that was genetically modified so that weeds could no longer grow around the crops. The corn contained glyphosate, which is what caused both the weeds to stay away and also many body changes to the rats. Some rats experienced issues “including weight changes, triglyceride level increases in females, changes in urine composition in males, and reduced function or organ damage in the liver, kidney, adrenal glands, heart, and hematopoietic system.”(Wikipedia.org/ Séralini affair) But no major side effects seem to occur on humans. Is that the truth? Or are major food companies trying to hide the fact that they might be killing us
There have been numerous health problems after GMOs we introduced in the late 1990s. People who consistently eat foods that have been genetically modified ingest glyphosate in high concentrations. Since glyphosate causes chemical alterations that interfere with certain processes, it has possible chances of causing serious diseases such as; Autism, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. There are many plants that produce substances that are toxic to humans. But the level of toxins that are in the plant are low to where it does not ham the person who consumes it. Which means that there can be anything in them hat can harm us and makes us sick without us knowing. There is evidence that shows that GMOs have caused harm in humans, that some of the diseases that are caused is also found in animals. Many GM fans will point out that if we do toxicity tests on genetically modified foods, we should also have to do toxicity testing on every other kind of food in the world. But it has already started from the time we have been growing our own vegetation without changing its DNA. There is plenty of scientific evidence to recommend caution with respect to certain kinds of genetic modification, especially if there are genes involved that confer antibiotic
How can genetically modified food affect our society? GMOs are crops which have been scientifically manipulated to receive certain results. The United States proves their commitment to this movement, as their grocery shelves are filled with them. However, not many stand with the U.S., as many countries have banned biotech foods because of their risks. Genetically modified foods are a risk to our society as they may contaminate other productions, but they resist weather patterns; they lack the necessary tests to provide information about their possible dangers, however they are envisioned to be a solution to many health issues; furthermore, they dominate the food industry by not allowing variety, but on the other hand, GMOs may help future issues of food shortages.
“When you light a candle, you also cast a shadow.” – Ursula K. Le Guin. No matter what good some people believe they are doing, everything seems to come with a consequence, and the question is whether or not the good overpowers the bad. Many experts argue that Genetically Modified foods are actually beneficial to, not only people, but animals, plants, and the world overall. Some experts even state that, not only are they beneficial, but that they also protect the environment and aid food productivity. Most farmers actually recommend GMO’s because they are easier to grow, maintain, and tend to be more profitable; however, countless other experts have come to realize that GMO foods are untested, unsafe, and unhealthy. Studies indicate that
I am writing to address your article Canada won’t be following U.S. in labelling GMO food products, as I feel you did not address why Canada should be following the U.S. by legally requiring genetically modified foods (GMFs) to be labelled on food products.
In todays society, people are more concerned about what they put into their body. They eat healthy and maintain a stable diet, but unknown to a number of these people is their food may have been tampered with in the form of Genetically Modified Organisms or, for short, GMO's. Genetically Modified Organisms are plants or animals whose DNA has been altered to favor a certain characteristic or trait which is already in the DNA. This includes enhancing the DNA in plants to make them bigger, invincible to pests, or invincible towards weeds. Although, the reason why GMO's are a controversial topic is because of lack of knowledge. Genetically Modified Organisms are risky and potentially to dangerous to be handling because of the unknown side effects
Genetically modified crops are proven to damage human, animal, and plant life. These foods are toxic to all forms of life. Gary Null is an activist with a Ph.D. in human nutrition and public health science. He wrote the article, ’44 Reasons to Ban or Label GMOs’, he says, ‘GMO giant Monsanto [one of the largest producer of GM foods] has a history of producing highly dangerous chemical compounds including DDT, Agent Orange [remember that orange spray from the Vietnam war?], saccharin, and recombinant bovine growth hormone, all of which are known to cause significant health issues’ (Null). Null also says, ‘According to meta-analysis carried out by researchers at Caen University in France, a GMO feed diet contributes to kidney and liver toxicity in rats (Null). If a GMO diet does this to rats, what would happen to the
A GMO is an organism whose genetic makeup is changed by humans. A genetically modified organism (GMO) is a plant, animal or microorganism whose genetic code has been altered, subtracted, or added (either from the same species or a different species) in order to give it characteristics that it does not have normally.
"One of the most unscientific and dangerous statements made by biotech proponents is that millions of people in the US have been eating [genetically modified] food for a decade and no one has gotten sick" ("2007 Roulette"). Since the early 80s, there has been speculation on the safety of genetically modified foods, and to this day there is still no definitive answer. Genetically modified foods have many proponents who advocate their safety, but they have just as many critics who claim that genetically modified products are unsafe for human consumption. While there are some health risks associated with consuming genetically modified foods, there isn't enough research to defend the claim that all genetically engineered foods are harmful to
The food industry utilizes genetically modified organism in almost every single product that one consumes. Americans tend to go with these food options because it is cheaper and easier to access. However, not only does this option contribute to the nationwide issue of obesity, it also damages the human body in the long run. As these discoveries are quite new to the country, there has not been enough time to survey and analyze the long-term effects of GMO consumption. The concern for the long-term negative consequences of the poison being fed may soon outweigh the benefits of the cheaper alternative. (Fukuyama 118). GMO consumption infiltrates the human body and plants a seed of unknown side effects for years to come. The world is unfamiliar with the long-term consequences and one will not be able to note until a couple of more
Many people feel that genetically modified organisms are unsafe, untested and therefore not something they want in their food or environment. I feel that without the proper studies and research we are putting ourselves in the hands of large corporations that have more of an interest in making money than offering a safe product. I feel it is important to make an informed decision when it comes to products or organisms affecting ourselves or our environment.
A concern that is growing is what we are eating and how it is affecting us. A lot of food is processed today, causing concerns about GMOs. GMOs stands for genetically modified organisms; this means a living organism’s genetic material has been artificially changed in a laboratory. GMOs are combinations of plant, animal, bacteria, and viral genes that do not occur naturally or even through “traditional crossbreeding” methods. Many people have questions and concerns about GMOs, and more and more people are starting not to like them. GMOs have taken over most of the US and Canada, many consumers are concerned with their safety of what they are putting in their bodies, and many are under the influence that GMOs are harmful because so many other countries have banned them or require labeling. Genetically Modified Organisms are often confused with hybridization and cross breeding. The differences are GMOs are forced together and include things that are not in nature, while the other two involve two related species being put together. GMOs are more controlled, direct, and specific. Genes are identified, isolated, copied, and introduced into other organisms. The biggest difference between breeding and GMOs would be genetic modification allows genes to transfer between species. GMOs are manipulating DNA, which many believe are harming our bodies; however, humans have been exploiting the creation of new biological variations for centuries, creating many combinations that would never
We have been participating in a mass scale biotech agricultural experiment for over twenty years. Since the mid-1990s the U.S population has been consuming Genetically Engineered (GE) foods or foods that contain Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) without having done enough research to assess its long time effects on humans. According to the U.S Food and Drug Administration (FDA), agency responsible for protecting the public’s health and safety, “genetic engineering is the name given to certain methods that scientists use to introduce new traits or characteristics to organisms.” In other words, scientists modify the structure of plants or animals by removing some of their DNA material; or by inserting that
In the past few years, society has been made more aware of genetically modified organisms (GMOs). Because of this, GMOs are being replaced in diets with more natural and organic options. GMOs have been researched and found to cause adverse effects on human health because of the gene splicing, or genetic alterations that are done to create them through genetic engineering. Before this issue became an issue, many people were eating processed and even healthy foods without understanding what chemicals and toxins they were actually putting into their bodies. GMOs are infused into food without awareness because one never really understands what all those unpronounceable words, label GMOs, really are. Due to recent research, it has been found that genetically modified organisms are harmful and can lead to increased risks of disease and cancer.
only harm the environment, but humans as well. Many studies have shown that people get toxic
Humans have been intentionally changing the genetic properties of animals and plants for centuries, through all the standard breeding techniques of the use of radiation and chemicals to create random mutations, some of them turn out to be useful, for example Genetic Modified (GM) Foods. What is Genetically Modified (GM) Foods? GM foods are foods that are derived from organisms that have been genetically engineered. Also they are called genetically engineered (GE) or transgenic crop that are generally made of a genetic marker. GMO have a very long history. In fact, they have been around for thousands of years. So perhaps the conflict over their safety shouldn't be about whether they are safe for humans to consume, but rather how they will impact long term.Even though Genetically Modified Foods (GMF) would increase food costs, these can improve yields for farmers, provide nutritional benefits, and help to alleviate the increasing global population of third world countries.
