Do you ever wonder why your hair is the color that it is? Or where you got your height? Well this is all dependent on your genes. The genes that you have were passed onto you from your parents. Geneticists the people who study our genes and heredity. They do extensive research and study how genes work and how they are built. Geneticist don’t just learn about humans, depending on what part of the field they are working in they may also learn about plants and animals. All of the data that they collect from research they use to find new medicines and cures for all different kinds of diseases. Like I said they also work with plants and animals. If you are just starting out as a lab technician/assistant you will need a bachelor's degree (4 years) in genetics, biology, or another related field. You also might need a license in the area depending on where you are going to be working. If you want to move up and be a researcher you need a Master’s Degree (6 years) and a PhD in genetics or another related field. Lastly if you want to be at the top of the chain you will become a medical geneticist you need to go to medical school to earn a medical degree (4 years). After that you need to complete residency and pass the medical board exams. If you are more on the medical side a job that relates is a Pathologist. These people work to diagnose different diseases that people have. A geneticist also does this but they treat diseases within your genes. They also work to treat the diseases within you by creating new treatments. Another similar occupation is an Agronomist. They are more related to the research side of the field. Agronomist study crops and the soil. They then suggest things to the farmers so they can grow healthy plants. They help find new ways to make food fast and conserve at the same time. Agronomists and geneticists are related because they both look for new way to help crop production. The difference is geneticists look into changing the genes of the crops to make it the best that it can be. One last job that is similar is a forensic scientist. These types of scientist study and analyze evidence from a crime scene to try and find out more of what happened. They can work along with a geneticist to figure out what happened. This may happen when they can’t identify the person, they can try to trace the DNA to figure out who it

Even as a young girl, I have always been fascinated with how the world works and the gears that make everything flow in perfect harmony. Because of this, I have taken 7 credits worth of science courses during my high school years and have also participated in many extracurricular activities in the name of science. Other than science, history (specifically ancient and medieval) and music have been interesting academic subjects to my brain and heart. Inside every little thing, is a very long molecule of DNA. If scientist can magnify DNA millions of times, we would see a long rope wrapped up several times. Technology allows us to see how our DNA is wrapped up inside each of our cells like a very long rope of spaghetti. Scientists knew that deep within the coils, were large numbers of different genes but wondered where one began and where one ended? Some genes made flesh, and some made blood but what they were trying to find were the proteins in our body. They determined that to find them was to cut the strand into manageable gene sized chunks. Back in the 70’s, scientists came up with an idea that if they could isolate the individual gene, and transfer them to another species, they might be able to understand how they work, and what they could make. There was one researcher, Herb Boyer, that would eventually become the first genetic engineer because of his findings. A personal area of interest is the practice of genetic research. A gene determines what an organism looks like and how it functions, genes are also a unit of heredity. In Modern Society, genetic testing can help discover genetic diseases that could lead to harm to people now and future generations. As a result of genetic testing it will give the knowledge to people and doctors to resolve the issues before the issue even happen to help us get a better understanding of the issues that will rise in our life time. Genetic testing will give information to people about their ancestry, genetic disorders/diseases, if a person is a carrier of a gene that their children could get and result of their child to be harm in the future or even death. There are multiple genetic tests that would be helpful, for example, Newborn screening, Pre Implantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD) and Direct to Consumer.
Genetics is the study of genes, heredity, and genetic variation in living organisms. Genes are regions of DNA that code for the production of specific proteins. Genes are inherited from parents through sexual reproduction, also known as meiosis. Parents have two copies of each gene, also known as alleles. These alleles can be dissimilar in the amount of protein they code for (“What are Dominant and Recessive?,” n.d.). During meiosis, chromosomes can cross over and exchange genetic material within these alleles. This creates genetic diversity within a population.
Biotechnologists are scientists who study the chemical, physical, genetic and structural make-up of cells, tissues and organisms, write detailed reports, then find ways in which organisms and biological processes can be used to create new medicine, foods, fuels and vaccines.
