George Washington was the General in charge of the Continental Army which defeated the British Empire in 1783. His title was Commander-in-Chief. He was elected as the first president of the United States by the 2nd Continental Congress (elected by 50 to 56 Congressmen), because he was elected before there was a United States. He didn’t want the job. From what I’ve read he dreaded the in-fighting, political maneuvering, and demands made by the members of the government as they created and established a viable and sound government to meet the needs of the populace. Washington just didn’t want to be a part of the fray.

Before George Washington became president, his great grandfather reached the New World in 1657 and settled in Virginia. His parents were Augustine and Mary Washington. George Washington is regarded as a natural leader and the father of our country. He was the first president under the Constitution, not the first president of the United States. From the very beginning, he came into a job full of problems and a mile long to-do list. He had to set up the Judiciary Branch, deal with uprisings and conflicts between the natives and the western settlers, and try to keep together a nation that was falling apart. He created a group of advisors (the cabinet) to help him with certain issues. George Washington was born in Bridges Creek, Virginia in February on the 22 of 1732. At the age of eleven his father, Augustine Washington, died of unknown causes which caused George Washington to live the next few years in different households throughout Virginia. Martha Washington was born on June 13, 1731. She was the eighth child born to Frances Jones and John Dandridge. As Martha grew up she developed a lifelong love for reading. She underwent training, expected for a young woman of her class taking lessons in functional (needlework, household management etc.) and in recreational ( dancing, horseback riding etc.). When Martha was nineteen she got married for the first time. She got married to a Virginia planter named Daniel Parke Custis in 1750.
