The revered and respected first president, George Washington, gave the US hope during one of its most difficult times. Using the events and circumstances of his life to learn and advance his position, he grew from humble beginnings into a legend. George Washington had a valuable, well-rounded education from ages seven to fifteen, studying all the subjects (Nevins and Graff). Due to his father’s death, George grew up under the supervision of his half-brother Lawrence at Mount Vernon, learning many lessons and developing thoughts, actions, and manners he used later in life (Nevins and Graff). He worked as a surveyor for his first career and learned the benefits of hard work, endurance, and resourcefulness (Nevins and Graff). After Lawrence died, George took over running the family plantation and found farming an honorable, delectable, amusing, and profitable occupation (Nevins and Graff). Standing six feet tall with broad shoulders, Washington cultivated a lavish lifestyle of dancing, cards, billiards, and hunting as a prominent and active member in his community and church (Nevins and Graff). George Washington started his military career in November of 1752, and in 1755 he took the position as commander of all the Virginian troops at the young age of 23 years (Nevins and Graff). The colonies decided to elect a president on the year 1789.  Washington was the first choice for president.  During the American Revolution , he was one of the best generals. For example, he was usually fighting along with his soldiers, not just giving orders. Also, Washington was never severely wounded in battle. Many people believe we would have lost the war without George Washington.

As a young boy, Washington was full of morals and courtesy and he had an obsession over fame. Young George Washington was interested in many things, such as horseback riding, hunting, taking care of crops, and dancing. When Washington’s father died when he was eleven, Lawrence Washington played a great role model for George. Lawrence was part of the British army and married a refine rich lady named Anne Fairfax. Unfortunately, Lawrence died serving the army and George inherited his stepbrother’s house, in Mount Vernon, and his passion for being a soldier. Washington served in the British Army and fought with the British during the French and Indian War. He soon resigned when he was not accepted as a commissioner in the British Army.

Another story about the young George Washington was about he had thrown a silver dollar across the Potomac River. These stories are just myth, but it shows a reader that if someone makes up moral stokes about someone, especially a man of high power, that the person they are making the stories about must be a very moral person. This is exactly what young George Washington was. He was very kind, compassionate, and hard working. His father died when he was eleven years old and it is very plausible, that, because he was the oldest male still left in the house, he became the new “man of the house”. This is where he learned his character of hard work and responsibility.

On February 22, 1732 Mary Ball Washington gave birth to her first son, who was later known as the great George Washington. George Washington was born, and raised in Virginia. His childhood held few moments of greatness, seeing that he was only one of the ten children in the family. George Washington’s parents grew tobacco, and sold timber for a living. He received most of his education from a boarding school, about thirty miles from this home. Although George Washington was not very religious he was a Christian, and helped out at a local churchyard school. At the age of twenty-one he was employed as the official surveyor of the country Culpeper, and owned more than 1500 acres of land which he paid for himself. George Washington was the first president. Before that he was known as General Washington. He fought in many wars such as the French and Indian war in 1767. He was known as “the father of his country”. You can tell that he must have been a very good president because did a lot of stuff and since he was re-elected. George Washington died at 67 years old. Everyone knows George Washington as the first president, but most people do not know his other roles in the creation of the United States of America. In Joseph J. Ellis’s book, His Excellency George Washington, Ellis tells about Washington’s life. He includes his time as a general in the Revolutionary War, his life in retirement after the war, and also his time as the president. Ellis’s main focus in the book is to paint a picture for the reader so it almost feels like they are right next to Washington as his life is explained. The information in his book allows for readers to have a better understanding of what Washington went through in his life and also ,at times, gives educated guesses on what Washington might have been thinking. Through this book, it is easy to see why George Washington is referred to as one of the greatest Americans to ever live.
