Media has been an important influence in many cultures for centuries. It has a great impact on our day to day lives. Whether it’s movies, internet, television, or just a regular movie, the media is very influential. When looking at media from a sociological perspective it reflects our culture. It gives us a different perspective that influences our attitudes and sense of culture. Applying sociological concepts to media shows us what different races, class, and genders experience in their day to day lives and issues that are going on in the world. The media presents these messages as a way to communicate with people all over the world about bigger issues that are being faced every day. As he tries to turn and walk the opposite direction, he is put in a headlock and dragged to the trunk of a white car. Thereafter, the plot begins when Chris whom is a photographer agrees to go visit his white girlfriend, Rose, parents. He is nervous about the visit because Rose did not tell her parents that he is black. While on the way to Rose’s parents’ house, the car strikes a deer. The police come to check out the accident and he racially profile Chris and ask for Chris’ license but Rose calls the police out for harassing Chris. They arrive to the house and Chris noticed how her parents seemed happier than he thought that she is dating a black man. They immediately give him a tour of the house and some family history but also the dad, Dean, boasts about how much he loved Obama and would have voted for a third term. Rose’s dad is a neurosurgeon and her mom, Missy, is a hypnotherapist whom is eager to cure Chris of his smoking habits. That night, Chris couldn’t sleep and decided to go outside to smoke. While outside he noticed the maid, Georgina, strangely staring in the mirror and the groundskeeper, Walter, running at top speed in the middle of the night. When he gets back inside, Missy ends up tricking him into the room to sit down and ends up hypnotizing

The media is powerful. It shapes the minds of millions of Americans. Our position in the world allows our media to not only shape the perceptions of Americans, but the world at large. Whether listening to the radio, going to the movies or turning on your television, your brain is being feed a diet of what to wear, what to buy and more importantly, how to think, how to think about others. Media shapes our perceptions of different races, sex and religions.
Missy then talks about his mother who passed away known as Chris’s sensitive spot. Daniel Kaluuya, referring to Get Out, alarmingly states “people think horror films have monsters and aliens and darkness and all this shit. In the real world, there’s probably nothing more horrifying than racism” (Crucchiola). Daniel Kaluuya, the star of Get Out, explains the movie is more than a gruesome film intended to make people scream from spooky pop outs and morbid creatures with masks. Instead, the movie enhances the real life horror of inequality that occurs in our society everyday. On top of that, Kaluuya explains his tremendous anguish in order to play the role as Chris in the film.
Since there is such easy access to fast communication devices such as cell phones and the internet. The media is what comes out of such a wide popular use of the internet and television. The media has wide control over what is shown on television and also a lot of what is seen online in advertisements. The media will manipulate the way people think about things. An example could be that the media is what makes young boys and girls obsessed with reaching certain unobtainable goals of looking a certain way.
On February 24, 2017, Get Out, was released in theaters. The thriller/horror film by Jordan Peele depicts the story of an interracial couple consisting of a black man and white woman, as they visit the white parents over a weekend. A series of twists, turns, and thrills makes the film entertaining to a wide variety of audiences who enjoy an adrenaline rush in the theater. After a couple weeks in the box office, the film has showed a potential for success, but as Hollywood is still business driven, it is important to view a film’s potential to earn a profit through smashing success at the box office paired with success in ancillary markets.
