In majority of horror films, there always seems to be at least one reoccurring theme. The theme that seems to be a big one is females being seen as the target or victim. When it comes to the genre of horror, young girls, specifically high school or college girls, are used as the main character. Whether it’s a group of teenage girls or one singled out, they always tend to be the center of attention. Why is this specific gender and age chosen to take the main role in slasher films? Girls of the ages between sixteen and twenty-two featured in these types of films usually occur to fall under some of the same categories. They are all characterized as stereotypical teenage/young adult girls being viewed as clueless and weak. A major reason that tends to be argued for young girls being targeted in this genre is due to their sexual interaction or problems and issues they may have caused in the past. Whether the person attacking the female in the film is coming back for revenge or just out of personal hate, the attacker uses these reasons to “curse” the victim as a reason for the attack. The females are seen as symbolic in modern day slasher films; they are seen as the main trouble in this specific genre. In horror films, women being seen as problematic to society, sexually cursed, weak, and symbolic are all factors in the creation of making them the main target or victim in this specific genre. There is a stereotype for just about every section you can use to categorize a person.
A stereotype is a group of attributes given to a group of people, most often hurtful and negative and not true.
We often do stereotype others just because it is more simple to refer a person to a particular group.
“A stereotype is a rigid, oversimplified, often exaggerated belief that is applied both to an entire social category of people and to each individual within it. Stereotypes form the basis for prejudice, which in turn is used to justify discrimination and attitudes. They can be positive as well as negative.” Stereotypes exist within any social group, and social group or cliques which are groups of people who share similar characteristics and interests such as the ones priorly said.
Where once she was a female, now she is both girl and boy, though most often and most conspicuously girl” (Clover 135). The main analysis with the victim is that the victim is going to be killed whether it’s male or female, beautiful or not, and sexually active or not. Postcoital death is the most common of slasher films and is usually a pivotal point of the climax. According to Clover’s piece, “the death of a male is nearly always swift; even if the victim grasps what is happening to him, he has no time to react or register terror” (136). With that being said, I think it is worth noting that there’s a reason female deaths are filmed at closer range and in more detail. I feel that it’s easier for viewers to watch a female be stripped and abused and killed, because of what the audience is seeing; her naked body and her being taken advantage of. The director of the film highlights two important aspects of the situation: tits and the screams. If mostly males are watching these types of films, they aren’t going to want to see naked men and how they are getting groped or abused because that is not appealing to the male
A "stereotype" is a social perception of an individual in terms of group membership or physical attributes. Stereotypes are generalizations made about a group and then attributed to all members of that group.
A stereotype is “...a fixed, over generalised belief about a particular group or class of people.” (Cardwell, 1996).
What is a stereotype? In my definition it can be a term used to classify an object or thing, maybe even a person. A stereotype can be a person who has little knowledge of something or none at all. There are a lot of different stereotypes out there. For example, “White men can’t jump” is one used in sports such as basketball. This can be a stereotype to people who have never witnessed a white man dunk a basketball. Larry Bird was arguably one of the best basketball players in the history of the NBA with many awards and achievements to prove it. He was indeed a white man therefore, counterpointing the stereotypical phrase, “white men can't jump.” Just like this one, there are many stereotypes out there with a broad range of phrases or
According to Dictionary.com a stereotype is something conforming to a fixed or general pattern, especially an often oversimplified or biased mental picture held to characterize the typical individual of a group (dictionary.com).
Stereotypes don't just occur to the clothing someone wears or what their hobbies are it can be a whole entire
All most everyone in there lifetime has stereotyped others are have been a victim of stereotypes. A stereotype is the belief about another culture, race or a person that has no logic or evidence to support there negative thoughts. Many people believe that when a person stereotypes another it is the lack of information or ignorance
The main population accused of stereotyping is teenagers; they are seen as rude and judgmental. For example, in high school the people are divided into groups by how they dress and whom they hang out with. There are the skaters, freaks, preps, snobs, cheerleaders, jocks and nerds. No one person set up
Stereotypes are deeply embedded in every society in numerous ways. The dictionary definition of a stereotype is “one that is regarded as embodying or conforming to a set image or type.” Stereotyping or Labeling is a technique that “attempts to arouse prejudices in an audience by labeling the object of the propaganda campaign
Horror movies throughout history have been known to have their cheesy storylines or continuous bad acting. Especially horror movies. People nowadays could easily spot the flaws in a film and judge them drastically in reviews. Yet, little do people notice the ongoing discrimination between genders. Horror films tend to portray males and females substantially differently because of stereotypical views. There seems to be a pattern in which each gender takes a certain role in a movie continuously. Females are shown to be “objects” such as sex and emotional symbols, while males are shown as strong or powerful and moreover as the main bad guy. Although some of the newer edition films of the horror genre are displaying each gender more and more equal throughout the ongoing years, the gender discrimination dilemma still exists and can be seen by the statistics in the movie industry in general.
Most concerns are with the important positioning called the final character that happens to be a girl, with relationship to spectator. There are theories that are used to analyze the movie as a male character. There is where popular culture evolves in that every last or final person in a horror movie is always a woman or girl. The serial attacker or the killer usually turns out to be a male. Ironical how women are viewed as weak and fearful people they are always the ones that end up being the last people. The final girl is structurally meant to make an interesting impact to the audience so that it can be watched by almost
What is considered stereotyping? To put it short, “The perceptual process of applying exaggerated beliefs associated with a categorizing system.” (Adler, 2017) There is a difference between stereotyping and a reasonable judgement or generalization. For example seeing a woman in the store and making the reasonable judgment that she is in fact a woman versus seeing her and noticing her white skin and Starbucks coffee in hand, immediately labeling her as a “white girl”. What few people realize is the fact that Starbucks does in fact have more than just caucasian women for customers.
