• Managing Side Effects of Treatment: o Infection may occur in the child receiving treatment. The nurse can assess the child for general malaise, dehydration, seizures and fever to help diagnosis an infection. Labs will also be drawn to help identify the source of infection. Broad spectrum antibiotics are used right away and the child’s temperature is monitored closely. The nurse will educate the parents on keeping the child away from crowds when they are sick and encourage good handwashing. o Bleeding in the child is very common while going through treatment due to lower platelet levels. Different drug therapies are used depending on what form of treatment the child is receiving and if the child has allergies to any drugs. Before chemotherapy begins the child should be given antiemetics 30 minutes to 1 hour prior and regular administration for at least 24 hours after chemotherapy. The goal would be for the child to never experience nausea or vomiting if possible (wong).
• Nursing Care During Bone Marrow Transplantation: o During bone marrow transplants children are in the hospital for extended period. During this time the nurse spends a lot of time with the child and family. The parent’s may be more comfortable talking to the nurse when they have question’s and concerns. o The nurse is responsible for teaching the parent’s and child what will take place prior to the transplant, during and after transplant. The nurse teaches the family that the child is high susceptible to infection and it can be life threatening. Visitors will be limited during this time and hand washing is extremely important. Repositioning the child and encouraging movement so no skin breakdown happens is also important.

The child may be very scared if they are younger to have IV’s, X-rays, CT scans, MRI’s and blood draws. The nurse should do the best to keep them informed of what is going on and how long procedures take. For the infant or younger children, many facilities may choose to give them some sedation, so the procedure isn’t scary.
• Pain Management o When managing the childs pain during cancer treatment the nurse must work with an interdisciplinary team involving many different experts to come up with the best possible pain management plan for the child. The nurse would be the one to carry this plan out in the child’s care. Knowing what opioid’s, nonopioids, NSAIDS, acetaminophen with codeine, oxycodone, and morphine to give during different times is crucial. The nurse must also know the side effects of these medication and monitor the child closely.
