It is largely known that the most significant issue facing the planet today is global warming. There is no doubt it is one of the biggest environmental issues throughout time, though it is widely debated among scientists and environmentalists what the main causes are. Global warming isn’t a new issue, in only 1989 the UK Prime Minister at the time warns that the increasing emissions of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere are going to have a significant impact on the earth in the future (BBC News, 2013). The warming of the earth is caused by greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide that trap long-wave radiation in the atmosphere. This warming of the earth surface is referred to as the greenhouse effect. Greenhouse gases are the gases, such as carbon dioxide, methane, and water vapour which accumulate in the atmospheric layers prevent heat being radiated from the earth to escape. Without greenhouse gases the earth would be considerably cooler but with increased human activities, temperatures are rising to an unstable level (Arbogast, 2011).

Global warming has been a controversial topic for years and some have even denied its existence; however, as more studies are being published every day in regards to our changing climate, it is hard to ignore this growing issue and how humans contribute to it. The term greenhouse gases refers to the group of gases that are primarily responsible for global warming and chief among these gases is carbon dioxide. To get an understanding, Global warming is when the earth’s temperatures rise more than average causing drastic weather and climate change. It all began during the industrial era in the early 1800s where fossil fuels such as coal, oil and gas became the primary source of energy. Since then many people had soon discovered that fossil fuels have improved their way of life, therefore the use and demand for fuel has been on the rise. In the United States it 's self currently provides more than 85 percent of all the energy consumption – that’s nearly two-thirds of our electricity (Ronnie D. Lankford)! Even though many people argue that these fossil fuels have improved our standards of life, such as providing us with electricity that light up our homes, or fuel that gets our cars running, taking us from point A to B. Yes, these are great luxuries to have but these fossil fuels add carbon dioxide to the Earth 's atmosphere, which is harmful to the environment as well as the well being on this earth (Ronnie D. Lankford). This can then be seen as a problem made by human activity. The questions that are to be explored are; How is global warming caused and the effects? How it can be prevented or stabilized?

The current climate changes that are occurring all over the world have sparked a growing controversy on whether global warming is indeed a result of human activity. Many of these individuals who play a role in this controversy argue that the current climate changes are simply part of the patterns seen in the Earth’s geological history or that it is simply caused by an increase in the brightness of the sun. This point-of-view is understandable as humanity is dependent on the climate for survival. However, many climatologists and scientists have found that the current climate changes are much more worrisome than previous climate changes. They have found that carbon dioxide (CO2) levels have increased over the years, because of an increase in the use of coal, oil, and gas, and that the Earth’s current pattern of warming is greater and faster than that of prehistoric warming episodes.

There are currently 7.4 billion people on this earth in comparison to the 3 billion people in the 80’s. The world’s population has grown at a startling rate and everyone is trying to live in the same way we always have since the developed world with cars, computers, and factories. Factories work the same way, cars run on the same stuff, our bulbs have hardly changed in their energy absorption, what we are putting out into the world has not changed. What has changed however, is the speed and amount of which we are putting out. The main problem of global warming is the rate at which we are pouring Co2 into the air, trying to keep the same lifestyles we have grown accustomed to. We cannot go on like this. Global warming is an issue facing the world today. This is due to the fact that it has caused people to lose their homes, temperatures to rise and many natural disasters to occur. In addition, global warming is a phenomenon in which an average temperature of the earth’s atmosphere and oceans increases due to high concentration of carbon dioxide (Henrik Selin, Michael E. Mann 2017). Whether the negative changes to the global climate is the consequences of human activities or natural process is a global debate in everybody mind. Certain gases in the atmosphere, such as carbon dioxide, trap and absorb the sun’s energy and re-radiate that thermal radiation in all directions, which causes the Earth’s surface to warm. This is known as the greenhouse effect, which is another undeniable fact. The greenhouse effect is not a new concept, however the media portrays its influence to be entirely harmful on the climate. Over the past 50 years, there has been an ample amount of evidence that shows how human activity has affected our atmosphere. The level of carbon dioxide concentration has increased tremendously due to the burning of coal, oil, gas and the clearing of forests. These actions are completely preventable and, until human beings realize this, we cannot begin to help our planet recover. The increased levels of carbon dioxide cause the Earth’s temperature to rise which is heating our planet’s oceans as well as melting the ice on our planet. What is most worrisome for all inhabitants of Earth is not the change itself, but the rate at which it is occurring.

The US, being only one country, cannot stop global warming alone, but it can and should do its part to reduce emissions. However, we cannot just immediately stop all emissions. The main obstacle between us and a green energy economy is economics. Most of the energy sources we use either emit a large amount of CO2 and/or Methane or they are not economically feasible to switch to. Solar energy, however, maybe be the one energy source that can both eliminate emissions and provide energy to the country at a cheap price.

Global warming represents an immense threat to our planet. But first off, what is global warming? A congruous mix of organisms, people, and environments are being harmed by its effects. Ocean levels have risen, species are have become extinct, and the world is not what it used to be. This is a large risk for the earth, and the outcomes will be enormous, causing illnesses and financial decay. As we all know, our planet is at risk of becoming a victim of global warming. Every day that risk increases due to the number of inefficient methods of creating electricity, which produce massive amounts of carbon gas. This carbon gas is released into the atmosphere and some of it remains in the atmosphere due to the effect of greenhouse gases. The collection of gases in the atmosphere gradually leads up to the heating up of the entire planet which will most likely cause the rise of sea levels, causing coastal cities and communities to be submerged underwater.

We as a society have reached one of the most crucial time periods in the history of our world. Due to the way we have used the resources on this earth we have created a situation in which our climate is drastically changing. The burning of fossil fuels such as coal and oil has caused gases like carbon dioxide to become trapped in the atmosphere causing a natural greenhouse effect. The greenhouse effect has caused the earth’s average temperature to rise and has resulted in arctic glaciers melting. These glaciers had gases trapped inside them that are now being released into the atmosphere further raising the earth's temperature. Due to the way we are polluting our air we have caused global warming. This global warming has caused stronger natural disasters such as hurricanes and wildfires putting our society in more danger than ever before.
