Genetically modified foods have been the most recent breakthrough in the fight involving hunger. Genetically Modified foods(GMO) can be defined as organisms (i.e. plants, animals or microorganisms) in which the genetic material (DNA) has been altered in a way that does not occur naturally by mating and/or natural recombination. GMOs give us the ability to recreate a plant's genome and allow for manipulation in the genes that will provide rapid growth or defensive properties that will protect the crop. Although GMOs can provide us with many beneficial aspects, we still do not fully understand the deleterious affects of consuming genetically modified food.

Genetically modified foods are a new source of nutrition in the US and many speculate these foods have not been tested enough to ensure the safety of its consumers, while many Anti-GMO activist argue the safety of consuming, Consumers believe that GMOs contain more nutrients than the original because the Genetics of the food have been altered. Nutritional value in Genetically Modified foods does not change but what the modifications do is ripe the food quicker as well as prevent harmful bacteria from developing.
Although both sides of the argument may have valid points. The priority of the government is to ensure the safety of its civilians and that includes the crops we eat. Many opponents suggest that genetically modified (GM) foods can affect human growth and development, increase allergic reactions in persons with allergy sensitivity or cause allergies to develop in healthy people. Proponents of using genetically modified organisms to alter and improve foods claim that there are no health risks to humans and that GM foods are subjected to stricter guidelines and testing than “naturally” grown food. They also claim that genetic modification of food is necessary to produce more drought tolerant, insect and disease resistant crops that can sustain the earth’s growing human population. A recent survey conducted suggests that public opinion is evenly divided on whether or not GMOs should be used in foods for human consumption. The main proponent to use gmos was to increase food production to feed the world's impoverished and to use less pesticides in farming. Gmos have not achieved any of its goals as world hungry still exist and pesticide use continues to be used at the same rate. The heavy use of pesticides is not good for the earth people or other life forms that come into contact with them. They are polluting our water and land and if we continue to use them heavily we will make our land infertile. In my paper, I will be addressing the ethics of genetically modified (GM) foods. I will be exploring the opinions and beliefs on GM foods from multiple perspectives. This will include perspectives from the U.S.A. and other countries that have employed them. With this, I will use experimental data and surveys to analyze how certain groups of people view GM foods. This will include how income status, gender, college education, and knowledge of public safety and nutrition affect the people’s opinions of this subject. If these individuals view them as ethical will be addressed, and how different methods to improve them will also be discussed.
