Genetic modified organisms, or GMOs, are living organisms that, through the genetic engineering process, have been altered to withstand certain chemicals and increase the nutritional value of the product. In fact, the majority of the foods found at the grocery store are genetically altered. Genetic modification is becoming increasingly popular on farms throughout the United States and moving into other parts of the world due to their increasing yield capabilities and pest and weed control. However, this has been, and continues to be, an extremely controversial topic of discussion in the world of agriculture and biotechnology, as well as health food critics, because of potential environmental and health risks.

A new kind of foods called the genetically modified foods has been creating a quiet revolution in the American market for the past several years. Scientists are able to produce these new foods by transferring genes from one organism into another across species boundaries. This new technique has been developed to improve the shelf life, nutritional content, flavor, color, and texture of foods. Since 1994, about 45 genetically modified foods such as tomato, corn, soybeans, canola, and potatoes have been marketed in the United States. About two-thirds of foods that are processed in U.S. contain genetically modified ingredients. So, we the people are consuming these foods without realizing the fact that they are not produced naturally.

The World Health Organization (WHO) defines genetically modified foods as: “foods [that are] derived from organisms whose genetic material (DNA) has been modified in a way that does not occur naturally, e.g. through the introduction of a gene from a different organism” (WHO, year). GM foods are constructed and distributed because there is some perceived advantage either to the producer or consumer. There is a lot of controversy surrounding the use of genetic modification in foods grown for human consumption. Many opponents suggest that genetically modified (GM) foods can affect human growth and development, increase allergic reactions in persons with allergy sensitivity or cause allergies to develop in healthy people. Proponents of using genetically modified organisms to alter and improve foods claim that there are no health risks to humans and that GM foods are subjected to stricter guidelines and testing than “naturally” grown food. They also claim that genetic modification of food is necessary to produce more drought tolerant, insect and disease resistant crops that can sustain the earth’s growing human population. A recent survey conducted suggests that public opinion is evenly divided on whether or not GMOs should be used in foods for human consumption. This paper looks to discuss the pros and cons of GMOs in food and the reported effects, if any, on human growth and development.

The main proponent to use gmos was to increase food production to feed the world's impoverished and to use less pesticides in farming. Gmos have not achieved any of its goals as world hungry still exist and pesticide use continues to be used at the same rate. The heavy use of pesticides is not good for the earth people or other life forms that come into contact with them. They are polluting our water and land and if we continue to use them heavily we will make our land infertile. Just off of these facts I believe the use of gmos should be reduced as we are fighting fire with fire. You can't help feed people of today by poisoning the land and water for the people of tomorrow it is an inefficient and illogical

Diseases such as obesity, Alzheimer’s, Celiac Disease, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and so much more have been on the rise. Researchers have suspected the culprit of these diseases to be our food. Along with the diseases, Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO) has also been on the rise. The more poor food we eat, the greater the potential harm to our health. One of the poor foods we consume is GMO: the altering of genes in food to produce desirable effects. A GMO is an organism, whose DNA has been altered by adding another organism’s DNA to create a certain trait, such as corn that kills bugs. With genetically modified foods, feeding the hungry will be easier, along with farmers being able to produce more crops. The US should allow the production and selling of more genetically modified organisms.

Gmo foods and non-gmo foods are to complete different groups food that it is involved with our health. Each group is categorized as being organic, and non-organic foods. All is involved with the health in humanity, and each has its description on how they are labeled in the community. In my paper, I will be addressing the ethics of genetically modified (GM) foods. I will be exploring the opinions and beliefs on GM foods from multiple perspectives. This will include perspectives from the U.S.A. and other countries that have employed them. With this, I will use experimental data and surveys to analyze how certain groups of people view GM foods. This will include how income status, gender, college education, and knowledge of public safety and nutrition affect the people’s opinions of this subject. If these individuals view them as ethical will be addressed, and how different methods to improve them will also be discussed. In addition, how the legal system has addressed this issue currently and in the past will be examined,

It is said the GMOs consequences are largely unknown and once the genes have been modified, there is no going back. Though GMOs can be very helpful. GMOs are safe for human consumption because we have been eating them for decades with no ill effects, but for people who don’t want to eat GMOs, products should show provide labeling. Recently the FDA approved genetically modified apples to prevent them from browning and potatoes bruising. While people began to uprise to this change, the FDA claims that these new GMOs apples and potatoes are safe and nutritious to eat. The benefits of GMOs is the resistance to disease. Plants can now withstand harsh climates, make crops pest and parasite free, and eliminate bacteria in plants. Crops have become high in nutritional value, with high vitamins. For example, golden rice is packed with vitamin A which helps treat disorders. There is also environment benefits allowing livestock and crops to adjust to any environment. Genetically modified products has a divergent stance, one claim is critical despite all claims, specialist cannot confirmed any negative side effects with the consumption of the products. It’s the 21th century, changes need to be made to the society so that everyone can continue to have a comfortable lifestyle.
