After researching more about the field of social work and courses provided within the adult and health aging department, I know that I found my passion in working with adults. I am excited to learn about the policies and micro level interactions encompassed within the area of AHA. I am finding that the curriculum provided by AHA will help me purse my goals as becoming a medical social worker. Furthermore, the mental health option within AHA allows me to understand how to deal with patients within the adult field. I am learning that AHA is the correct path for me to use my strengths to fulfill my passion and goals. The more information that I learn and gather about the field of adults in social work, the more excited I become in finding an area
The “Grand Challenges for Social Work” are important because they promote: the well-being of people and families, a strong social fabric, and a just society that fights exclusion and marginalization, creating a sense of belonging, promoting trust, and offers pathways for social and economic progress (“American Academy of Social Work & Social Welfare”, 2017). The 12 Grand Challenges help continue the transformation of society through social work. As a social worker, you are put able to make changes in the lives of those who need help, and the presented issue needs help. As stated in the Preamble of the Code of Ethics of the National Association of Social Workers, “The primary mission of the social work profession is to enhance human well-being
I am interested in working with the Hispanic/Latino community of Cleveland, Ohio. As a member of the Hispanic/Latino community I know there is a need for Spanish speaking professionals. My goal is to find a job at a local hospital where I can do medical and health care social work.
Being a social worker was and still is something I wanted to do well before I really understood what being a social worker meant. I knew after years of working with children and families, as well as homeless men, women, and veterans that; becoming a social worker was what I wanted to be, was going to become, and who or what was meant to be. It wasn’t until after getting into the University of South Carolina as a Biology major that I realized that that wasn’t what I was meant to be doing. But, before that, I looked into becoming a neonatal physician and again, the more I thought about it the less confident I was going that route. What I did know was that, while I wasn’t sure if wanted to work in that specific profession, I did want to work with
For my social work career study I interviewed Colleen Kolski-Daniels on October 3, 2015, who has held a Master’s of Social Work degree for twenty years. She graduated from Arizona State University in 1995. She is a licensed clinical social worker working for Hospice of the Valley, which is located in Phoenix Arizona. I conducted my interview with her via telephone, and followed up by email. Prior to working for hospice, she worked as a social worker in the hospital setting, an advocate for the Arizona Supreme Court 24 -hour Parent Assistance Hotline, and worked with a foster care review board. Within her job as an advocate for the hotline, she also assisted with a program that educated judges about domestic violence.
Pacific University is a liberal arts college, which makes it possible to study completely different subjects at the same time. I am interested in studying Environmental Science and Social Work. Since these subjects are so different, it is essential for me to attend a liberal arts college. I think that Pacific University is the perfect place for me to achieve my educational goals in Social Work because of its proximity to Portland. Portland has a large problem with child/ domestic abuse and human/child trafficking. Just in 2007, 21,000 children in the Multnomah County witnessed domestic violence. From 2009 to 2013 at least 469 children in the Portland area were exploited as commercial sex workers. With Pacific University being in the Portland
Aside from wanting to leave Norfolk, I came to Virginia Commonwealth to start my journey to a professional career as a social worker. I had many goals coming into the fall semester, some of which were maintaining a grade point average of 3.5 or higher to make the dean’s list, make friends outside of those from my hometown, express and develop my independence even more, and get a start on networking within the social work field. As of right now, I have met two of the four goals, meeting friends from different locations, and further develop my independence. Coming into the 2016 fall semester, I didn’t have many expectations. I feel like I was just going with the flow of everything because I have always believed that having expectations for certain
This course is the second class I take at Simmons College. Therefore, I am not too sure what to expect from the whole experience. All of my formal studies have been in Puerto Rico, thus, making this my “first” academic experience in the USA. I hope to be able to adapt to this new form of studying and make a smooth transition into my graduate years. One of my biggest goals for this course is being able to comprehend and have the ability to appropriately apply the different theories in social work. It is completely understandable that mastering them is not an option at the moment since that is something acquired over time and experience. I have encountered, studied and worked with certain theories in the past but looking back my impression is
My goal is to one day become a social worker for individuals with developmental disabilities. My goal is to reach this point through undergrad and graduate education, ultimately receiving a degree. I have been accepted into my early decision school, a great four-year college where I can follow a path that will lead me to a graduate school where I can finish a social work degree. I want to go into this field simply because I want to advocate for people with disabilities and help families understand their options and find the best care possible. A year ago I created a program for teens with developmental disabilities where I host events to give the teens a “typical” high-school experience. The events are monthly and are held at a variety
This learning experience is mainly going to help me grow as a person. I’m not always confident in some areas, and developing a plan of how I can plan to become a social worker will show me how I can strengthen some ideas to become better at it. Recently from my internship this past week, I had learned that if you work in the town where you’re from, there's going to be people in the community that know you. It’s best that you remember you still have to stick to the HIPAA laws. Because you don’t get into trouble by the state and lose your licensure. Confidentiality is always important because the client deserves to have why they're getting services between them and the worker. In my values, I displayed them as I normally would, I responded in
Social workers want to make a difference in people’s lives. They care about others and want to improve them. They want to help people overcome everyday life struggles. The challenges today are “poverty, discrimination, abuse, addiction, physical illness, divorce, loss, unemployment, educational problems, disabilities, and mental illnesses” (Social Work Profession, 1).
Being a social worker means understanding and always learning about human behavior like here in this case. Alexis will face many obstacles. This will be difficult for her to adapt to her every day social living, like when she interacts with others. This will influence her during her transition on what her first steps to take are in her big change. Throughout the rest of her life, her social interactions will continuously be reshaping for her ongoing social interactions with others. This would be directing to the way that she will now present herself. For example, the way she dresses and appears as a male is the new
My ambition is to complete my educational goals, thereby enabling my attainment of a career where I can help meet the needs of people. As a person that possesses a high degree of compassion and empathy, and a desire to help others, I have carefully chosen the clinical social work field. My academic achievements, my work experience, and my community service have all helped me to work toward my goals. I am currently enrolled at Rutgers University’s three-year, online Master of Social Work (clinical) program. Upon completion, I will need to submit fingerprints and undergo a criminal background check. First, I must apply for a limited master’s social work license with the intent to gain experience under the supervision of a licensed master’s social
Social Workers can approach middle schools and high schools to develop a preventative CBT evidence based program to improve resilience and coping skills in the students. This process would include developing a screening process, speaking with the parents, students, school psychologist/social worker, teachers, and any other additional clinical staff that would be working on the prevention program. Once all members agree to participate in a CBT based prevention program the social worker would then administer the ASEBA and the SDQ assessments. The results of the assessments would provide the social worker and school psychologist information on the students that are at risk, to include those needing additional assessment for possible mental
The participant observation project was a very interesting one that really shed a light on some of the intricacies and responsibilities of being a social worker. In Meridian, MS there are several programs that assist a wide variety of the population, nevertheless the largest by far is East Mississippi State hospital; formally known as East Mississippi State Insane Asylum. The reason this author chose this particular site is multifaceted. First, the writer has a history there as a direct care worker (DCW). For about a year he was employed in the adolescent unit where he assisted teens who were struggling with chemical and alcohol dependency as well as those who had true mental illnesses. It was the first hands on experience the writer
Empowerment is something that is a top priority when working with people. While many love helping people, empowering them at the same time is my ultimate goal. Throughout this essay, I hope to show how vital it is for me to obtain a Masters in Social Work. I will be doing this by presenting my experience and relationships that have influenced my selection of the social work career, my understanding of the responsibilities of the profession, my role and responsibilities that I assume in the profession, my reasons for selecting the program and thoughts, and thoughts on how the mission statement addresses my career goals.
