Despite the diversity of my experiences throughout the Garnet and Gold Scholar Society program, each area is connected by a theme of helping both children and families. This theme was born out my desire to seek a career where I could help others. Initially, this meant becoming a physician’s assistant, however over the course of my Florida State University and Garnet and Gold Scholar Society experiences I have decided to pursue a career as a child advocacy lawyer.
The mentors I had within each engagement area helped me to grow as an academic student and a future young professional. Dr. Cormier and Dr. Park served as my mentors during my Research Engagement Area and Director Gibson and Ms. Yon who were my mentors for both my Internship and Service

As my research mentor, Dr. Cormier provided guidance on how to improve on my professional communication, writing and presenting skills. I would later use these skills and the knowledge I learned while working on the project in my internship at the Governor’s Office of Adoption and Child Protection (OACP). It was this experience in fact, that I was able to use to connect with a professional that became a partner of the OACP on the 30 Days of Amazing Children initiative. The initiative I worked on as an intern. The initiative was a statewide adoption campaign, that promoted the adoption of Florida’s foster children. The professional who I was able to develop a connection with, ran the local Children’s Medical Services (CMS) office, and her focus and interest were on mental health disorders. By being able to chat briefly with her on the subject, I was able to open the waters to the OACP’s proposal of having the CMS offices participate in the initiative by showcasing children with severe medical …show more content…
As I was entrusted by Director Gibson to serve as the main correspondence for the OACP in gathering NAM applications and necessary information from agencies. After organizing the information, I then corresponded with the Department of Children and Families (DCF) in creating the lineup of the campaign. Deciding which children would be featured on which day. This experience pushed me out of my comfort zone as I had to be insistent with others who were above me to ensure that I had all required information and in resolving some of the miscommunication issues that arose while completing the
As my professional history indicates, my commitment to providing outstanding service and the ability to build relationships with diverse populations, including children, teens, and adults, has been a hallmark of my career. I have consistently excelled as a reliable problem-solver and demonstrated initiative in utilizing technology to streamline processes. I know my insights, eye for detail,
Specific Speech Purpose: To inform my audience about the nature, problems, and proposed solution of the Foster Care System.
While undertaking undergraduate studies I developed a special interest in children’s human rights and child care and protection within state care. Through my work with children living in a state run home, I found the niche where I now need to better equip myself academically in order to serve this group in the way and on the level I would like. My career goal is to work with children who are wards of the state, especially those with a history of behavioral and emotional problems. I am most interested in
My life's journey is aspiring to further my education to become a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) as well as acquiring the credentials for Certified Rehabilitation Counselor (CRC). Upon achieving a master’s degree in Rehabilitation Counseling, I plan to apply my skills in a rehabilitation setting focusing on individuals with disabilities. My goal is to make an impact in the lives of many families and to empower these individuals to strive to their fullest potential. Furthermore, I find it gratifying helping individuals reach their goals and most importantly their dreams. I am currently working with the community and volunteering with the Autism Services Clinic at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV). Assisting children with special needs has been an exceptional
My personal experience gives me emotional strength and purpose to serve the vulnerable sections of society through pediatric health care. Growing up in a remote town in
I see the National Honors Society as a volunteering and discussion opportunity with other diligent students that brings out leadership and encourages service. The one thing I am looking forward to above all others if I am selected to this group is the great privilege it will be to surround myself with other enthusiastic students. Since NHS is a group of motivated individuals I think we really need to push the students who are accepted to achieve even more than they already are and I hope I can become a member that is able to bring together the student body in order to set and achieve greater more ambitious goals within Pioneer High School and the Ann Arbor Community.
I would like to thank the members of the Ohio Child Conservation League for considering me for the Mildred Biery Grant Application. My connection to your group is through my grandmother, Wendy Schmelzer, who has been a part of OCCL for 45 years and who has brought this grant to my attention. She has always been my greatest role model and supporter. I remember a time when I was young, my grandmother and I were on a paddle boat and I declared that I no longer wanted to own an ice cream shop, I wanted to be a baby doctor. She explained to me that this profession was called a pediatrician and that I could become whatever I wanted to as long as I was willing to put in the work. Although I have changed my career path a few times since then, I have
I met Wendy in January of 2014. That year, my brother (who was 20 at the time), was due to “age out” of the foster care system. He was unprepared to lose the housing and assistance he relied on and I was unable to provide all he needed at that time. Upon hearing of our dilemma though a mutual acquaintance, the Lankford 's opened their home and their hearts to my brother and eventually welcomed him into their family through an informal adoption. Since being adopted, he has made remarkable positive strides in his emotional development, self efficacy, and outlook for his own future. The Lankford 's have given him the type of stable and nurturing home life, supportive role modeling, and loving family atmosphere that we as (future) educators hope all children and youths have available to them. Because of how she touched my brother’s life, Wendy was the first parent whom I thought to interview for this assignment. I was eager to learn
Being close to her sparked my passion for helping people, especially people with special needs. She taught me that it’s ok to love someone who is “different.” Seeing how much of a difference therapy made in her life, and her family’s life, instilled in me that I want to make a difference in people’s lives. I witnessed first-hand how difficult it was for this family to carry out everyday activities and the profound impact that therapy had on their lives.
My mentor would have to probably be my sister. She has been through alot, good and bad. And that is all that has made her very strong. She has 4 daughters and she is always there for them helping them out as much as possible, and she then yet still tries to help everyone out as much as possible.
On September 18, 2015 I interviewed Mrs. Anisha Nix at Ted’s Montana Grill in Downtown Decatur, Georgia at 5:48pm. Mrs. Nix is a Family Consultant Supervisor at the DeKalb County Child Advocacy Center. I interviewed Mrs. Nix, not only for the position that she holds but also because she did not start off with a degree in social work or sociology. Before Anisha took an interest in social services, she gained her masters in Biology from Spelman College. Once done with her undergrad Ms. Nix decided that she would pursue and ultimately gain her Masters in Social Work at Georgia State University, then continue on to become a licensed Social Worker. As the Supervisor of the Advocacy Center, it is her job to supervise the Family Consultants at the
As a natural born resident of the City of Long Branch, I personally have gone to admire and appreciate the level of professionalism in our police officers in which govern our community. I have ultimately come to understand this high standard of professionalism and leadership has been properly groomed over generations. Thus, in my closing year at Saint Peter’s University in a concentration of criminal justice, I have taken significant interest in applying directly to Long Branch Police Department.
The mentor I have chosen is Jane Stanley. Ms. Stanley was influenced by the stories of her grandfather to become a nurse. She was unsure if she could do it at first because she did not think she was smart enough, but she began to love it. While Ms.Stanley was attending school she came across what she thought was an obstacle. She was five months pregnant and ready to drop out of school, but with the encouragement of her husband she did not give up. She graduated and could not be more grateful for the strength god had given her.
As long as I can remember I have always wanted to make a change for the better in the lives of other people. I love, enjoy and am passionate about working with children. It wasn’t until my little cousins born addicted to drugs and alcohol which caused developmental and intellectual disabilities and some communication deficiencies, did I begin to develop an interest in the behaviors of others. Throughout high school I would volunteer at hospitals, child care centers, and cerebral palsy foundations. I have over 15 years work experience applied behavior
I am planning to do an internship this summer and I was wondering if you know of anyone or anywhere that is looking for an intern/volunteer for this summer. The only major requirements from my department are that the internship has to be 120 hours and since I go to a secular college, my department requires that my internship can't involve converting people to a religious tradition. For example, I could work in a church doing administrative work or babysitting children, but I wouldn't be allowed to teach a Bible study or lead worship for my internship. The internship can be paid or unpaid.
