My life's journey is aspiring to further my education to become a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) as well as acquiring the credentials for Certified Rehabilitation Counselor (CRC). Upon achieving a master’s degree in Rehabilitation Counseling, I plan to apply my skills in a rehabilitation setting focusing on individuals with disabilities. My goal is to make an impact in the lives of many families and to empower these individuals to strive to their fullest potential. Furthermore, I find it gratifying helping individuals reach their goals and most importantly their dreams. I am currently working with the community and volunteering with the Autism Services Clinic at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV). Assisting children with special needs has been an exceptional …show more content…
I have taken on the role of behavioral interventionist on a case, for a six-month term, where my responsibilities consisted of providing individualized therapy treatment to children with difficulties in communication, repetitive behavior, social interactions and problems with behavior. In addition, I also provided parents with skills training to reinforce knowledge of what was implemented throughout the six-month progress. Further, as part of the parent skills training, I provided positive feedback to ensure parents were learning the proper skills needed to communicate effectively with their child using the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS). On the other hand, I plan to continue volunteering at the Autism Clinic at (UTRGV) to gain more clinical experience and also in search of helping more families. On a personal level, I have seen my loved ones’ struggle with dual diagnosis and it has motivated me to learn more in order to help other individuals with

Cognitive behavioural therapy as one of the modern treatment method in not an independently formed treatment, different theories have contributed to its present shape and application.

Originally, I was drawn to speech pathology after my sister’s diagnosis of Autism at the age of three. Watching Diane struggle with language development and acquisition while other children seemed to grasp these skills naturally is what initially sparked my interest in helping families like my own. At the start of my junior year, I set out to obtain experiences working with different populations. Toward the latter half of junior year, I became involved as a clerical volunteer at the Sacramento Scottish Rite Childhood Language Center. By senior year, I was balancing a full course load alongside three volunteer experiences. In addition to Scottish Rite Childhood Language Center, I divided my time between tutoring at a neighboring elementary school in the Twin Rivers School District and serving as an intern at the Autism Center for Excellence (ACE). During my undergraduate experience, I welcomed the opportunity to work with students that struggled with literacy, language, and pragmatic skills. After graduation, it was my goal to obtain additional experience in the field as a speech-language pathology assistant.

My passion for the rights and advancement of people with disabilities started after my son Jacob (name used with his permission) was born with special needs. I accepted this new life path and absorbed myself in knowledge. Management at his early intervention program recognized my drive, commitment, love and leadership skills and sent me to attend trainings, workshops and conferences on their behalf, in return, I created and presented in-service trainings for parents and staff. As a single parent, I embraced this method of acquiring knowledge, skills and resources in a journey I am still forging.
How we teach is just as important as what we teach. This is especially true when training staff to perform on the job. Due to the important role of our direct care staff it is crucial to implement training procedures that are scientific and evidence-based. Based on the following literature review, Positive Behavior Changes (PBC) has created a comprehensive training package for direct care staff. By utilizing Personalized Systems of Instruction (PSI), video training, in-situ training and role-play methods, staff will learn how to implement Functional Communication Training and Errorless Learning with individuals on the Autism Spectrum. In order to provide our clients with the best possible services, we seek to not only equip staff with the knowledge
A rehabilitation technician is a job in which someone works at a physical therapy under a physical therapist. Rehabilitation technician, commonly known as a rehab tech, perform tasks that are taught during on the job training unlike a physical therapist. Patients will work with the rehab tech for a majority of the time. It is important to know what the responsibilities of this job are as well as the skills needed.
I have always had a strong desire to work with individuals with special needs. In class, we looked at the various disabilities that affect the overall language of a patient. One of the major disorders that I would like to learn more about, due to the prevalence of it, is Autism Spectrum Disorder. I feel that most people know of someone who is on the spectrum, whether it be a mild or profound impact. As of now, I hope to work with a pediatric population, where developmental disorders, such as Autism Spectrum Disorder, can play a major role on the patient’s development. Before I declared a major, I debated with the idea of being a special education teacher. This area of speech-language pathology allows me to combine both passions of mine into
It has invariably been my dream to work with children with disabilities and to achieve a career as an Occupational Therapist. I want to work with children who have disabilities to help assist in making a difference in their lives. From a young age, I have known what I wanted to be when I grew up. We were close with a family when I was growing up that had a daughter who had Rett Syndrome. I grew up watching how different therapies, particularly hippotherapy, improved her quality of life. I have spent summers volunteering at the Equestrian Zone, which is a place that offers hippotherapy to people who have disabilities. I’ve spent my breaks from college shadowing therapists to be certain this is what I want to spend my life doing. I have observed
While engaging with ABA coursework, I became an intern at the university’s Autism Center for Excellence, where I began my journey of applying what I learned in the classroom to implementing behavioral strategies for children with developmental delays. After a year of being a dedicated intern, I was invited by the center’s clinical supervisor to attain a position as Program Team Staff. I enthusiastically accepted the role and assumed responsibilities that the position required.
As a student, I worked as a Direct Support Professional with adults diagnosed with developmental disorders. One responsibility of my job was to collect behavioral data. After months of taking data, I was very intrigued about what the data was used for, and how it would assist my client. Unable to explore my concerns within that company I accepted a position as a Behavioral Therapist for children diagnosed with Autism. As a Behavioral Therapist, I obtained my Registered Behavioral Technician license. This job allowed to me to explore the reasons for taking data, how the data is used to develop plans for the clients, and how the plans assist in the progression of the client. In the duration of my time as a Behavioral Therapist, I found my passion for children, analyzing behavior, and autism. It was a refreshing feeling to see how fast clients progressed from their initial intake. The relationships I developed with each one of my clients and their parents ensure me that I was in the right field and living in my
I am a physiotherapist from Egypt .I am seeking to complete my PhD studies in the field of neuroscience as the main criteria of my practical experience is to deal with cerebral palsy children. Rehabilitation program for those patients is exhausted for therapists, parents and children. For therapist, the program needs high effort, for parents, the program needs a lot of time and money, for children, the program may be painful when doing certain exercises. Simply, the impacts on children and their families can be devastating. And life-time costs to the health care system can be very high. This is what motivated me to mainly focus on neuroscience as an important field that I come up with a new approach to addressing cerebral palsy by enhancing
A significant proportion of rehabilitation medicine patients use and frequently perceive a benefit from alternative therapies, particularly massage, chiropractic, vitamin and mineral supplementation, and acupuncture. Incorporating alternative therapies into physiatrist practice is a desirable future direction for the specialty. Rehabilitation for older people has acquired an increasingly important profile for both policy-makers and service providers within health and social care agencies. This growing demand for rehabilitation services has generated an increased interest in the use of alternative care environments, for example care home environments, for older persons' rehabilitation. At a time when there is pressure for policy decision-makers
All of my psychology degree has led me to this point-from talking about different careers in Psych 101, to learning about child psychopathology, to discovering behavior modification, to meeting my boss at an internship fair, to receiving and accepting a job offer at Utah Behavior Services, and to love it so much that I’ve decided to start my career in this work. The BYU psychology program has helped me see the benefits of ABA, as well as learn about the struggles of children and their families when they receive an autism diagnosis. I’m grateful for BYU, for the psychology program, and for this internship class that has helped me feel even more comfortable in pursuing a career in ABA therapy as a
