When people think about nurses, many ideas come to mind. They think of the hideous old starched, white uniforms, a doctor’s handmaiden, the sexy or naughty nurse, or a torturer. The media and society have manipulated the identity and role of nurses. None of these ideas truly portray nurses and what they do. Nurses are with the patients more than the doctors. People do not realize how little they will encounter the doctor in the hospital until they are actually in the hospital. People quickly realize how important nurses are. Because nurses interact with their patients constantly, nurses are the ones who know the patients best.

Sometimes nurses are not noticed as professionals. People often degrade or belittle the nurses' role as a health care professional. Some may think nurses do all the "dirty work" or call it a "gross" profession. When I tell people I am going to be a nurse, some say that I am going to be "wiping bottoms all day", or that they could never be a nurse, because all nurses do is take doctor's orders. Others commend me and recognize that it is a difficult and noble profession.

Growing up in a small town, with the knowledge of a small town community can have an effect on you. Having the respect and dignity to know between right and wrong adds and interesting aspects into a life style. Growing up in a small community makes you realize what it is like to have small class rooms and having your teachers know you by a first name basis.Knowing everyone on each sport team because “everyone knows everyone in a small town”. I had the ability to be able to ride my bike down the street without a real question of my safety where I grew up in Worland Wyoming. I have different academic interests than others may, I enjoy different extracurricular activities than other students, and life experiences that are unlike anyone else that have shaped me into who I am today.

I feel that my GPA is not indicative of my current academic strength. During the first two years at the University of Illinois, I struggled to adapt to a new education system and a different cultural environment. However, in the following years, I excelled within the classroom. Despite originally declaring myself as a General Management major, I pushed myself to take more data driven electives. As a result, I was able to graduate with an additional Business Process Management major.

I am appealing the admission decision on my transfer application because I feel that my GPA from my previous university, Georgia Institute of Technology, does not accurately reflect my potential at Florida State. There were extraneous circumstances that affected my GPA at Georgia Tech, and I feel my test scores and high school performance show a more accurate representation of my performance as a student.

The Honors College at Lone Star presents itself as an immense opportunity for me to truly exhibit the potential which I strive to exude. It provides not only convenience to my family and I, but reassurance that I can receive an honorary level of education just a few miles from home. As I traverse through high school, I always hold a subconscious idea of the future I wish to lead and the effort which it demands, but I never became discouraged by the years of education which I must accomplish. Throughout high school I have faced many challenging classes, but the most significant one was advanced pre calculus. I would like to explain my previous GPA at Temple University. While attending Temple University I lost my home so I began working two jobs to try to maintain. During this time, I got pregnant with my daughter and her father left me to handle all of these responsibilities alone. I was working two jobs, going to school, and preparing for life as a single mother. I became overwhelmed with everything going on around me. I tried to keep up with everything but unfortunately my grades suffered. I became consumed with my new responsibilities as a single mom. Trying to juggle school, work, and a child is extremely difficult especially without a support system. I was determined to push through but at the time I didn't know how balance these new challenges

When I entered college, I had little idea of what I wanted to study. Eventually, I found two majors that have been most fulfilling, Russian and International Studies. These majors have also led me to areas of public service I never before considered. While I knew about positions in the Defense Department and in intelligence, I quickly learned that my foreign language abilities were valuable outside these capacities.

Nurses are known as the heart of health care. Being a nurse is a demanding job that requires commitment, but does not lack rewards. A fact stated by the American Association of Colleges of Nurses claims that “Nurses comprise the largest single component of hospital staff, are the primary providers of hospital patient care, and deliver most of the nation 's long-term care” (“Nursing Fact Sheet”). With many roles throughout the healthcare system as a whole, nurses are a large, very important role that interacts with every other part of the health care system. They have great qualities that not everyone has. They are highly compassionate, caring, professional, diligent and understanding individuals. A nurse experiences people at their worst and still care for patients in a way that no one else would. All these honest points prove that nurses are the most important members of the health care system because, nurses spend the most time with patients, nurses are the managers of patient care; they are teachers and are great with conflict resolution.

Nurses, for centuries, were on the front lines, taking care of the sick and wounded by any means necessary, forsaking their own happiness for the care of others. Their dedication was endless, going hours without sleep, and possibly days without eating. Nursing was and currently is a taxing career, that demands perseverance, patience, compassion, and trust. A nurse was once held in high esteem, considered the guardian angel to many, at times respected more than the physician. Florence Nightingale established that:

In hospitals where nurses are majorly based, there are several problems that the patients face thereby giving the nurses an excellent opportunity for understanding the human health concerns. Given the natural compassion I have for the suffering, I was self-propelled to end up in a profession that would enable me to interact and associate with the sick. Comparatively, nursing as a profession is related to proper conduct and positive practices as taught in their ethics. I admire both individual and public reputation of the nurses.
