Graffiti: Misunderstood By The Public

Even though graffiti takes talent, it is disrespectful to put on buildings and on trains. The most important building that should not have graffiti one it should be schools. School is a building that kids go to daily and they do not want to come to schools that has paint all over the outside walls of the building.

Today there are world known graffiti artists, Aryz, Kaws, and D Face are just a few. Any artist wants to be recognized and have their work appreciated. That is why public property is so appealing to the graffiti artist. A train car moving throughout the city with your mural on it will be seen by hundreds, even if its up for a small period of time. Most graffiti artists take time to create a piece. It takes a lot of planning and effort to make a great piece of art. Graffiti artists are all about techniques, you need to be able to show you are an expert in your medium. It’s also important for a graffiti artist to find an imaginative spot for a mural, so it’s obvious that it’s hard work. To make graffiti a piece of art it must have purpose and inflict emotion on its audience, which is why the forcefulness of the urban environment is as much as part of the artwork as the graffiti itself. Taggers have no real reason to create graffiti. Nor is what they do visually pleasing.

If you were to go open a dictionary and look up the definition of art, you would see that it has art as “The expression or application of human creative skill and imagination…” (“Art” 2017) and “Works produced by human creative skill and imagination.” (“Art” 2017). From these definitions, graffiti is art, yet in most cases, it’s considered vandalism because it is done without permission of the property. When graffiti is done in a designated place or with the permission of the property owner, then it can truly be considered art. But even if these circumstances are not met, if the graffiti goes beyond a simple tag, it is art.

By definition, graffiti is illegal. It is also considered vandalism because public or private property is intentionally destroyed, but in Alex Boyd’s blog “In Defense of Graffiti”, he clearly conveys his argument about how graffiti shows qualities of value and shouldn’t be criticized on impulse. Even though many people have seen graffiti as something to be condoned, punishable, and terrorizing, it is actually just another form of expression, communication, art, and point of view.

Graffiti can be found everywhere and anywhere. It is a way for people to express themselves and be creative in a public manner. It shows how passionate and talented they can be when it comes to drawing or tagging and have it displayed as a piece of art for everyone to see. Graffiti goes way back to the ancient times and is now very well known in the modern days which makes more and more people interested and fascinated by them. It can be used in different types of ways. Many artists can either spray paint, carve, paste, or stencil them on a surface. From how we see them today they are usually images of random cartoons, big bubbly letters, vintage black and whites or inspirational quotes. Virtually anything colorful or not and big that can be easily spotted. Graffiti is more superior to be known as art than vandalism because it is a self expressing act. People need to be open minded about the images they see and look at the message behind it or else they will immediately criticize and say it is vandalizing property.

While waiting for on a train, the mobile art museum known as graffiti passes you. Graffiti has been integrated into the everyday life regardless of city size or laws. By definition, graffiti is any type of writing or drawing scribbled, scratched or sprayed onto a surface in public. Freehanded graffiti has evolved into a premeditated version known as street art. Graffiti and street art allows artists worldwide to express themselves in their entirety. However, these forms of art are considered vandalism because the majority of graffiti is painted on buildings without permission. This causes debate on who owns public space, expressionism, and consent.

Graffiti is not art it is vandalism, because people want to show they are bad and can do bad things.Graffiti vandals get both public and private property.When a neighborhood has graffiti people automatically view it as a "bad neighborhood". In addition, to the cleanup costs or graffiti, graffiti vandals shoplift their materials, so it cost the city more money to clean up and pay for the materials.

The first reason graffiti is vandalism is because most of it is pointless. In the video “Graffiti: Art or Vandalism” it states, “ some of the things put on the walls are meaningless some say it shit on the wall” (Graffiti: Art or Vandalism, 2013). When people say it is meaningless they are talking about the taggings. It is just a name or sign that is meaningless.

If the Mona Lisa were painted on the wall of Da Vinci’s neighbor’s house instead of on his easel, or if any classical painting commonly admired as genius were made without permission of the owner of the property it was made on, would you look at it the same way you do right now, or would you spit on it for being illegal despite just as beautiful? Graffiti is seen as “vandalism” and it’s illegal, and for those who are caught can be charged with a fine, community service, probation or even jail time at extreme cases. Most communities do not stop think about what the artist is trying to display, but rather choose to ignore it because in their minds the people who have done them are seen as “thugs”, or more technical, “taggers”. Graffiti in fact displays the truth about our society behind a picture, and these artist, their key purpose is to get people to think in a new light.

Graffiti is a way for people to express their ideas and their opinions on events happening in the world. When many people see graffiti all they think is that the people who did it wanted to vandalize the area, in many cases that is not true

Graffiti can cost city's thousands of dollars for removing it and just gives the city a bad look. People are making graffiti galleries

The art of graffiti writing is a creative method of communicating with other graffitists and the public. They use it to express their identity, ideas, creativity, and feelings. Graffitists value this type of communication because of its links to people regardless of lingual, cultural, and racial differences in a way that nothing else can. Some graffitists do and view their art as a statement against political and economic order. Some see themselves as revolutionaries rebelling against the established art market or gallery system that only includes art that curators and art historians deem valuable. Some graffitists view their work as a statement against Western ideas of capitalism. Whatever the reasons are, they do their work with a purpose, with imagination, and creative skill to express emotion, which is what Oxford Dictionary deems as art. In addition, graffiti art is not a spontaneous act like tagging in the form of fancy scribble. The completion of an art piece involves a great deal of imagination, planning, and effort.

Graffiti has put a major impact on the way people look at their everyday life. It was not used so much here in the United States but was used overseas. Overseas, graffiti, or street art, was used or played as a sport, just like baseball is Americas sport. There are different laws that are put over there than what there are here. They can get away with some of the things that they paint or make over there. If we tried some of that type of work over here, we would get in trouble and possibly serve time for vandalizing someone else’s property. There are many biased outlooks on graffiti, but it should be considered art in all places because of all the time, effort, and design the artist put into their work.
