FACT: When reading the poem “Gretel in Darkness” by Louise Gluck, the poem could possibly remind the reader of a horror movie. As the reader I could picture the witch’s “tongue shriveling into the gas” as the witch dies (Gluck, line 6). It is fact that the poem is about death and darkness. Also as the reader I can say that the poem had acts of bravery. Gretel “killed” for her brother (Gluck, line 17). Also one could possibly make the connection that the poem “Gretel in Darkness” is similar to the movie “Hansel and Gretel”. The movie “Hansel and Gretel” has a storyline of a brother and sister chasing and killing witches, similar to the poem. The setting of the poem was in the “black forest” similar to the movie “Hansel and Gretel & the 420 Witch”. I found it very interesting that a poem that was written in 1971, has numerous movie recreations. INTERPRETATION: My interpretation of the “Suicide Note” by Janice Mirikitani is that women is held to a much higher standard than men. The author was on so much pressure to have a four point grade average, that in her mind if she didn’t, she couldn’t compete with men. Also …show more content…

At first it was hard to tie-in the poem to life and death, but after reading it a second time, it was clear. The allusion used in the poem is remarkable. The title indicates how life is hard, and it is an “Uphill” battle that all of us will face no matter the race or gender. Also I could picture the author walking “Uphill” with the wind pushing against her body (Rossetti, line 1). The form, and physical structure of the poem is interesting. I loved the question/answer type structure the poem is written in. Personally, I will make my life full of joy and adventure, even though there are, and will be many challenges, because we all will die one day, so why not make the best of
